Sharks to lose another lock?

Reports coming from France suggest that Cell C Sharks lock Peet Marais is set to depart the Durban franchise to join club side CA Brive.

Marais, who played a big role in the team’s successful Currie Cup campaign under Brendan Venter in 2013 has not been afforded the opportunity to play Super Rugby this year, despite a number of injuries in the lock position. New Director of Rugby Jake White did include the 23-year-old in his enlarged squad at the start of the year, but seems reluctant to play him and even opted to tour with just two specialist locks in his 27-man group rather than look to Marais.

While there’s not been any word of a move yet from the Sharks themselves, it seems rather logical to expect that Marais will join Vodacom Cup team mate Edwin Hewitt (another who has been unable to crack the nod under White) in seeking greener pastures abroad.

Marais’s older brother Jandre, meanwhile, has confirmed a 3-year extension to his contract with Union Bordeaux Bègles, the French side he joined from the Sharks in 2012.

With Pieter-Steph du Toit out injured, it’s not clear what the Sharks plan to do at lock for the upcoming Currie Cup season, since there is now no depth outside the pair of Stephan Lewies and Ettienne Oosthuizen. Marco Wentzel is another player who could play a valuable role, but has thus far not played much in 2014.

The Sharks do appear to have acted proactively, contracting no fewer than five under 19 locks this year, including Junior Springbok Dan du Preez and the third Marais brother, Retief. One wonders if the coaches mightn’t have a surprise in store – and have one of them earmarked for Currie Cup rugby despite their youth.

  • This is bad how long before the third Marais brother leave? As soon as he’s older that 21 as it seems they’re only contracted to play age group rugby for the Sharks!!!!!!

  • Always sad to see good young talent leave SA shores. Would rather spread the talent (say to Cheetahs or Kings) than to see it leave. But the Euro and Pound are stronger than the Rand.

I actually thought Hewitt would have had more gametime by now after last season.

  • I can understand that players want to move on to forward their careers but surely as a Union the Sharks should be doing more to secure the services of players in key positions. I mean FFS we are playing a lock at flank but are letting a lock leave. Bresler seems to have a chronic injury so dont kno when or if he will ever return. PSDT will only be back next year. oosthuizen is very green and so is Lewies. So its not exactly like our lock stocks are over flowing. Are there perhaps immiment signings that we arent aware of?

  • I was chatting to a mate of mine last week. It is rumored that around half the vodacom cup squad have overseas contracts lined up for next year. Its sort of making a mockery of the vodacom cup as a development tool. I dont see the sharks being the exception in this case and as such I don’t see much of a point in hosting the competition. It isn’t religiously followed on tv like currie cup and super rugby. Hell I think varsity club rugby has a much bigger following.

Maybe its time for the unions to restructure and for saru to think outside the box for this competition.

  • Just to add a little perspective. Let’s remember that it was Jake White who put a lot of faith in both PSdT and Lewies, both very young players. We all know how talented PSdT is but I think we are all very pleasantly surprised at how well Lewies has done in Super Rugby this year. JW has gotten it right with Lewies, I am sure he has his reasons why he would allow Peet to leave.

  • JW got it right with Sithole, and Mvovo at 15. Let’s just give him a chance to get through the entire season. Sharks have not lost two games in a row this year, and we were a decent kicking performance from Steyn away from beating the Brumbies in Canberra, after he has been kicking superbly all season at poles. Perspective, I think it is entirely possible for the Sharks to win this weekend, even against the Crusaders in their fortress. Sharks are still log leaders, with same number of wins as Brumbies, that means Sharks have two more bonus points than the Brumbies, and the Brumbies have yet to tour. Perspective.

Addendorf always lived in Kleinhans shadow at school level, but then so did Marcel.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 43) :

Not many coaches have a WC title under there belt and its not like the Boks JW got from Rudoplh Strueli were the best Boks we’ve ever seen. He brought young players in for his Bok team to. Not every player will be rated by a coach. Some will miss out, but at least Jake is giving a few players a go.

People never liked the guy, the 07 Boks simply walked into that World Cup and took the Cup. It never looked like we weren’t going to make it.

Super Rugby is a new challenge, but somehow Jake turned around the Brumbies to just about a champion team in 2 years.

Now the Sharks are lying on top of the log in round 11 of the Super Rugby. Yes we are playing some pretty average rugby at times, but only average in one area. Most areas of our play game are way better than it has been in recent years.

The backline needs to fire, but then this is a backline that hardly has had any time to settle.

I would love to see the boys put in a clinical performance, like the ones in the first half of this comp, but I don’t think we’ve been as bad as some comments would suggest.

We’ve been boring and not scoring tries must be somewhat worrisome, but I have to think that Jake White is a good enough coach to get our attack going at some point.

I’m backing Jake and the boys to put in a good one this week.

  • @Letgo (Comment 63) : I would just swap Willie and Mvovo – Willie still offers a lot more from 15 in that it allows him to slot into any place in the backline. Mvovo has done extremely well for the Sharks at 15 – I think that experience will assist with wing play at international level.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 65) :

Willie’s defense is horrible. I don’t like the idea of him being the Boks last line of defense. Mvovo is much better in this regard.

Also, the Cheetahs has been playing Willie at wing, it gives him more opportunity to play wherever he wants on the field – a fullback needs to stay in position, as wing he can roam around a little.

  • @Letgo(Comment 63) I would have Sadie in the number 13 jersey and Julian instead of Jannie(penalty mechine),swap Willie with Lwazi cos I think his poor defence is because of the systems of the Cheetahs rather than his abilities.

  • @Chippa (Comment 72) :

I did think of Sadie, he has been looking good.
This is just me, I wouldn’t have Willie at 15.
Maybe Julian on the bench. I still rate Jannie as a player, even though his handling annoys me and everything else about him annoys everyone else.

  • Back to topic of locks.

Springbok locks in my opinion when they all recover :
    4. Eben, Flip, ( Bakkies ?) PSDT, Lood, Paul Willemse( Putting his hand up and remember he is a BB)
    5. Victor, Flip, PSDT, Franco, Lewies

Unless there is an injury PSDT will be in the squad but not playing – Victor, Eben & Flip ?

A real pity that Jake and coaching team did not give Peet or Hewitt an opportunity to prove themselves at this level. Surely the job of the coach is to use all the contracted resources and develop them. He promised everybody an opportunity.

Funny how Brendon used mostly the same resources and did not over train and play them , developed them, rotated them , had a great team spirit and achieved great results. Most important a happy squad. The rumours are rife the sharks squad is not a happy place ?

Irrespective of the coaches the sharks purge locks annually. They go from the Sharks and all do well????
