Toyota Cheetahs scrumhalf Sarel Pretorius has been ruled out of action for around a month, after picking up an ankle injury during last week’s loss to the Western Force. He is replaced by Shaun Venter in one of two changes to the team for Saturday’s outing against the Brumbies.

Venter moves up from the bench to take over the number 9 jersey from Pretorius, with uncapped Renier Botha coming onto the bench as scrumhalf cover.

In the other change, lock Boela Serfontein (the older brother of Springbok center Jan) earns a first start as he comes into the number 4 jersey worn by Waltie Vermeeulen last week.

Toyota Cheetahs: 15 Hennie Daniller, 14 Raymond Rhule, 13 Johann Sadie, 12 Rayno Benjamin, 11 Willie le Roux, 10 Johan Goosen, 9 Shaun Venter, 8 Boom Prinsloo, 7 Teboho Mohoje, 6 Heinrich Brüssow, 5 Francois Uys, 4 Boela Serfontein, 3 Coenie Oosthuizen, 2 Adriaan Strauss (captain), 1 Caylib Oosthuizen.
Substitutes: 16 Torsten van Jaarsveld, 17 Trevor Nyakane, 18 Nicolaas van Dyk, 19 Carel Greeff, 20 Waltie Vermeulen, 21 Renier Botha, 22 Elgar Watts, 23 Cornal Hendricks

  • Hope the Cheetahs can do the Sharks a favour by beating the Brunbies but don’t think that will happen.

  • This team really does not make any sense?!?! How can a guy like Rian Smit not even get into the match 23 once this year and they play Benjamin at 12 while Mnisi is looking great in the Vodacom cup?!?!

  • @JD (Comment 3) : I have to admit I was stunned when Benjamin was first picked at 12, but he’s done much better than I expected. I agree though that it would be nice to see more of Mnisi.

  • @MysticShark (Comment 4) : did not say he’s bad but I do think they have better option within their region. Cheetahs are not winning games but still the coach picks the same team?!?! Does not make sense to me.

  • I see the Sharks team is out:

    15. SP Marais 14. JP Pietersen 13. S’bura Sithole 12. Paul Jordaan 11. Lwazi Mvovo 10. Francois Steyn 9. Cobus Reinach 8. Willem Alberts 7. Jean Deysel 6. Tera Mtembu 5. Stephan Lewies 4. Etienne Oosthuizen 3. Jannie du Plessis 2. Bismarck du Plessis (captain) 1. Tendai Mtawarira

Substitutes: 16. Kyle Cooper 17. Dale Chadwick 18. Lourens Adriaanse 19. Ryan Kankowski 20. Keegan Daniel 21. Charl McLeod 22. Tim Swiel 23. Heimar Williams

Interesting selection of Alberts at 8 – I assume we can expect a forwards onslaught.

  • @JD (Comment 3) : Bit churlish criticising Benjamin’s selection at 12. He has been suberb, as for Mnisi, he is talented, but VC is not Super Rugby!! Riaan Smit is behind Watts and Goosen in the pecking order, and way behind Hendricks, le Roux, Rhule, and Daniller as FB/Wing. Don’t really see the merit in your question?

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 8) : the current selections is not really setting the world on fire but still Naka does not change anything. You really telling me you’re satisfied with the performances of the Cheetahs and that non of the guys in the GWK Griquas Vodacom cup champion team deserves a chance to show what they can do?

  • Change for change sake is daft! Is the change going to bring a better result? Smit is a good player that has performed well for the Cheetahs. But who will we take off to make space? Rhule, Hendricks, and le Roux have been playing well, as has Hennie Daniller. Is Smit going to perform better that Watts and Goosen at FH? Why replace Benjamin if he has been playing very well at 12? Nobody is satisfied with the Cheetahs season, but you have to look at the reasons, not just change blindly and hope for the best. Like it or not, this is the best 23 we have available! Naka didn’t use any of the Griquas players so that they could be available for the VC final, else their SH, Tiaan Meyerwould have been on the bench.

In your opinion, which Griquas player is going to be better than the current player in the Cheetahs 23? Apart from the SH I already mentioned? Maybe Mnisi, but he hasn’t really been tested at S15 level, and Benjamin has been really good there.
