Gutsy Sharks dig deep in Christchurch

The Sharks have overcome the early loss of Jean Deysel to a red card, to record a first ever win in Christchurch, beating the Crusaders by 30 points to 25.

Against an uncharacteristically flat and inaccurate home side, the Sharks opened the scoring, as a good Frans Steyn break off a lineout saw S’bura Sithole gallop over for the first try. Steyn’s conversion gave his team a seven point lead in the opening ten minutes, but that lead was to be short-lived as Crusaders flyhalf Colin Slade sauntered over for a soft score not five minutes later. Slade, who had an on-off night with the boot, had missed a penalty just before, but succeeded with the conversion to level the scores at 7-all.

The match, though, appeared to be over as a contest as early as the 17th minute. The Crusdares, guilty of jersey pulling all night, went a step further as flanker Jordan Taufua held on to Deysel’s boot after a ruck. The veteran flanker at first kicked out to free himself, then lost his head and appeared to deliberately stamp on his opposite number’s face. In the face of overwhelming video evidence – and a baying crowd – referee Rohan Hoffman duly dismissed the Sharks’ number 7, leaving his team with a mountain to climb.

Bismarck du Plessis admitted afterwards that that moment proved as much a turning point in his side’s favour as one would have expected ti to be for the opposition. The Sharks were galvanised and put bodies on the lines for 60 minutes like they’ve seldom done before against a hesitant and unsettled Crusaders outfit who found rhythm hard to come by. Slade slotted two further penalties to eke out a 13-7 lead, before Steyn brought the Sharks back to just 10-13 down on the stroke of half time.

An opportunistic try by Cobus Reinach, who got in the way of a Crusaders pass, kneed the ball forward before using his pace to sprint clear and score, saw the game turned on its head. Steyn’s conversion put the Sharks up 4, but despite the aggression and commitment shown, the Sharks continues to commit errors and indiscretions, allowing Slade ample opportunity to close the gap. Slade and Steyn traded penalties, before the hammer blow appeared to have fallen – missed touch from a penalty resulted in a counter from the home side which only broke down thanks to an early tackle from Willem Alberts. The Sharks lost a second man – this time to a yellow card – and Slade retook the lead.

Again the Sharks were given hope, with replacement pivot Tim Swiel restoring a 1-point lead and again that hope was dashed as Hoffman saw fit to penalise them immediately afterwards. The home side appeared to have the narrowest of triumphs sewn up, as they lead 25-23 with just minutes to play. The Sharks, though, were not done, with replacement hooker Kyle Cooper having the final say as he scored a season first try off the back of a textbook lineout drive.

Some frantic defence in the final minutes did not go unrewarded, with the Crusaders ending the game in fitting style, by knocking the ball on as they had so many times previously in the game.

Crusaders (25): Try Colin Slade. Conversion Slade. Penalties Slade (6).
Sharks (30): Tries S’bura Sithole, Cobus Reinach, Kyle Cooper. Conversions Frans Steyn (2), Tim Swiel. Penalties Steyn (2), Swiel.

  • A song suddenly came to my head and I had to re-word the lyrics slightly, with respect to USA history and the author of The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down – The Band (1969) Based on the song : The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down

The Night They Drove the Saders Down
    The Sharks is the name
To Christchurch we went for the game
    ‘Till McCaw’s cavalry came
wanting to tear us apart again

    In the winter of ’2014
We were hungry, just barely alive with 14 men
By 80 mins gone on May the 17th, Christchurch had fell
It’s a time I remember, oh so well

The night our Sharks drove the Saders down
    And the bells were ringing
The night they drove the Saders down
    And the people were singing
They went, “Na, na, la, na, na, la”

Lewies and Oosthuizen were magnificent, considering they were up against the player, the New Zealanders claim as the best lock in the world,at kickoff.
Jake White’s management was never more apparent as in the last 10 minutes of the game when he removed the threat of a penalty by taking Bissie ,Jannie and Frans off, sure as shit one of them would have been carded in the last 10.
Now add Marcel,PSDT and Pat to this team, and we can win this thing.
Having said what I have Bismark’s management of the defence on the field is a thing of beauty.

We showed so much guts and determination, putting bodies on the line time and again.. words fail me. Faith in this Sharks team COMPLETELY restored! After Deysel got sent off, I thought that if we can just loose within 7 points for a bonus point, that I would be satisfied. Hell boys! Never! Instead we went and smashed that Saders in their own backyard! BEAUTIFUL! More of this please! Next week, Blues, and I have no doubt that we can end our tour 3 wins from 4.

  • @rhineshark (Comment 60) : You’re not understanding what I mean dude.

The back of the Skybox should have these.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RCA_connector

The signal that comes out of this is analogue, which means it’s unencrypted, and ready for show. If you plug an RCA cable from the output of the skybox into the AV input on a display or recording device, that device will receive an analogue signal.

Now…if that device is a DVD recorder, or an HDD recorder (that’s a video recorder that uses a hard disk to record to rather than a DVD or VHS), then you select the AV input for recording. You hit record, and then play the game on the PVR, essentially dubbing it over analogue to the recording device. Make sense?

I’m making it my mission to try and expose this blatant form of cheating which has become a hallmark of the New Zealand game. Okay, maybe not a mission, but if I see it, I will screenshot it, so people stop salivating over the All Blacks and NZ Rugby and respect teams that play fairly.

  • Near perfect weekend for the Sharks. An unexpected win against the Saders, and both the Brumbies and Force failed. Only negative was that the Chiefs had a bye so technically they could draw level if we lose next week and they get 5 points. (although it would require a 40 point swing in PD).

Forget the fact that he is the best SA scrum half on the planet at the moment. He will be playing for France next year. He never played for the Bulls so I doubt Heyneke Meyer probably knows he exists.

  • First of all that was an exceptional and inspiring EFFORT from the boys!!!! So much ticker…So congratulations to Jake and the squad!!!

Now forgive me for being the pessimist. But Cobus Reinach and Frans Steyn (apart from that brilliant try create of course) were once again poor in their primary duties!! Having tremendous pace and being able to score such opportunistic tries DOES NOT make you a quality scrummy. Reinach’s kicking, passing and option taking were all really poor!!! Steyn was not quite as bad in that regard but not far off!!! Mindlessly kicking the ball away WITH NO CHANCE of getting it back is poor flyhalf play!! He put 1 or 2 bombs up that allowed the chasers to put pressure on the receiver. But tactical kicking is still a major concern for me (ironic since we play the kicking game). The commentators brought it up on numerous occasion. The 1st option on turnover/advantage ball should not be to kick. And if it is it better result in a high pressure situation in their 22. (but that does not happen with our kicks)

Also I have to applaud the effort of the front row for the first 60 odd minutes, but must once again highlight that we CANNOT ignore the impact that Chadwick, Adrianse and Cooper continue to have on the game!!! They deserve starts plain and simple!!

And finally, back to halfback issues, neither Reinach or Mcleod are of high enough calibre to take the team forward. There are players in Kockott and Vermaak who are screaming for contracts and we would be foolish to overlook them!!!

Dont get me wrong I was moerse happy and proud of the boys for pulling off this historic win, but I feel these issues need addressing!!

    GO SHARKS

  • So looking at the remaining fixtures… 3 away games, 1 home game:

    Blues (A)
    Stormers (H)
    Cheetahs (A)
    Stormers (A)

We have an incredible record against the Blues. 9 consecutive wins now. We know how to beat the Blues in NZ. However, after reaching the summit of Everest the week before, how up for K2 will the team be a week later, especially the last tour game? I really hope we are up for it. The Blues are one of only 2 teams unbeaten at home this year. It will be tough.

We should be thinking a clean sweep of all three remaining games in SA. The Stormers are ripe for the plucking this year.

3 wins out of 4 should see us do enough to top the log and ensure a home semi final and final.

  • @pienaar111 (Comment 143) : I am not pointing fingers at Kiwis in general its a few of their journalist etc. Otherwise I have a great time with most of the Kiwis I know.

  • @JD (Comment 153) : Seems SS has realised that we’re all suffering from a bit of Mallet constipation.

Would however have been nice to hear him choke on his words after the Sharks game…not that he’s of any use when he has to bring constructive comments to the table….his typical forte is whinging, bemoaning and know-it-all-ism.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 155) : ja he would only have bitched about Deysel’s red card and Alberts yellow card instead of talking about the guts of the Sharks team to beat the Saders at home.

  • Earlier, Deysel received some surprise support in star Brumbies pair Matt Toomua and Nic White who questioned whether he should have been sent off.

‘’I don’t condone dirty play but if he wasn’t being held off the ball there wouldn’t have been a stomp. Def a penalty but not a red,’’ Toomua tweeted.

White added: “Never take a boot to a players head but why did he have a hold of his leg 5m away from a maul? Taking out a defender on purpose?”-Couriermail

  • @KILLER SHARK (Comment 158) : Correct decision in my view should have been a red for Deysel (no provocation can excuse reckless behaviour) and a yellow for the Saders player. The IRB really need to look at stopping this Kiwi trick of taking out of defenders, and the only way will be yellow cards.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 159) : a week or so ago a Sharks try were disallowed cause of a defender been take out past a ruck, so why not penalise NZ players for playing opposition off the ball?!?!?!?! Deysel was wrong for stomping on the player’s head but he was prevoked and hopefully that will be considered in his hearing.

  • All I can say is that this is proof of what they are capable of when they communicate and play as a team instead of individuals with bloated ego’s seeking to win the game (Jannie). I am looking forward to seeing them build on this and for all those jealous bulls supporters spouting rubbish like “you peaked too soon now the wheels are coming off” I have this question, when do you expect to peak, two weeks after the finals? Well done boys, good communication keep it up!

  • Just my thoughts….Deysel’s reaction was stupid but i can understand his frustration at being held back. If he didnt react and the Saders broke through and scored would the Touch Judge have called the play back? I doubt it! Having given that Red Card the ref always viewed the Sharks in a negative manner…the penalty he gave to the Saders at the end when Cooper clearly won the ball fairly evidence of that. So having said that the Sharks reverted to true Natal rugby and gave their all to win…but why cant we play that brand of rugby from minute 1? Steyn needs to go back to 12 though and let Swiel have a run at 10. Lewies has def been the player of the seasons o far considering he was only on the fringe of the CC side last year
