Daniller accepts foreign offer

Another Cheetah has opted to join the foreign exodus, with stalwart fullback Hennie Daniller opting to join Italian side Zebre after Super Rugby this year.

The Cheetahs announced some days back that Riaan Smit – known as “True Blue” for reasons only those living on the East Rand seem to understand – will leave for French side Oyonnax at the end of the current season.

These confirmed moves add further to the talent drain that is sure to see 2014′s Currie Cup be distinctly watered down in terms of established talent – but that might also just open the door for a new, fresh generation of exciting stars to make their mark, not only on the Cheetahs backline, but on the rugby landscape in general.

  • I think it will affect our chances in next years Super Rugby more though. There seems a lot of players leaving.

  • “talent drain”"Hennie Daniller”, this words together confuse me ;) .

This is going to happen until the players no longer have to look else where for pay. Maybe teams should demand more from sponsors, something needs to be done to increase the money in SA rugby.

  • I reckon there will be quite a few ‘over-hyped’ faces and then some real heroes unveiled this coming CC.

  • He may not be the flashiest player but Daniller has been rock solid for the Cheetahs for a number of years so good luck to him finishing his career over there. Those Italian fields arent the biggest so hope he doesnt kick it out the stadium haha

  • Zebre and Oyonnax – I did not even know these teams existed. Boggles the mind where they get the money for these contracts.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 9) : Yeah – although your living expenses are also in Euro. I am just surprised that small name clubs like these can still draw the players with better offers than SA super franchises.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 8) : I take it that you don’t watch a lot of European rugby , Zebre plays in the pro 12 and the Heineken cup and Oyonnax plays in the French top 14 and the Amlin challenge cup , so lot of potential for sponsors .

  • @BR (Comment 11) : My bad – I don’t watch much NH club rugby, and then mostly replays in the gym. SS usually shows only games from the bigger French clubs like Bayonne, Toulouse, Stade, Racing, Toulon, Montpelier, etc.

I have just never come across these two clubs.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 10) : Its not just the pure money aspect but yes even those small clubs are very well off. But its also the way of life there. Yes weather isnt great but the club treats the foreign players very well and players also realise they can extend their careers playing overseas where fields are soften and you dont play as often so your body and hence income earning potential is longer.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 15) : Don’t think there has ever been a single match of Zebre been shown ever by ss but Oyonnax have had one or two but don’t blame you , but the potential for rugby in the NH is huge lots of the smaller rugby countries is getting more and more support , that is one of the key reasons I believe we should do away with Sanzar and join the NH, big money making opportunities

  • @Chippa (Comment 5) : Really, what does Gouws Prinsloo bring to the table, that Daniller doean’t? Lots of potential, but still green around the gills. Not much to choose between Gouws and Nico Scheepers either, so it’s not going to be a shoe in for Prinsloo.

  • @Ben (Comment 31) : Yes for sure he’s a good player but don’t think the Sharks should buy him. With the current Sharks backs available and still a couple of youngsters to come of age the Sharks is well set. Depth in all position is necessary and is a good thing but to much of a good thing is bad.
