Blues coach John Kirwan has named his side to face the Cell C Sharks in North Harbour on Friday. The loss of regular fullback Piutau to a serious knee injury has prompted a backline reshuffle.

Lolagi Visinia moves from wing to fullback this week, with Tevita Li coming in to replace him in the 11 jersey. George Moala has been dropped, with Pita Ahki coming into the centres. Other causlaties from last week are Francis Saili and Jackson Willison.

The only change to the pack sees regular captain Luke Braid return from injury – he replaces Brendon O’Connor at open-side flank.

Blues: 15 Lolagi Visinia, 14 Frank Halai, 13 Pita Ahki, 12 Ma’a Nonu, 11 Tevita Li, 10 Simon Hickey, 9 Bryn Hall, 8 Jerome Kaino, 7 Luke Braid (c), 6 Peter Saili, 5 Tom Donnelly, 4 Patrick Tuipulotu, 3 Charlie Faumuina, 2 Keven Mealamu, 1 Tony Woodcock.
Reserves: 16 James Parsons, 17 Sam Prattley, 18 Angus Ta’avao, 19 Hayden Triggs, 20 Steven Luatua, 21 Jamison Gibson-Park, 22 Ihaia West, 23 Albert Nikoro.

  • @JD (Comment 2) :
Their back 3 options are all big and quick. Some real fire power out wide – we will need to deny those guys any space at all.

I’m glad Pitau is not playing, cos he is well capable of running through forwards as well as backs. That said, Halai is also a pretty big unit.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 4) : Visinya also worries me… dangerous runner.

We need to watch Nonu though…. that gap between Frans and Paul worries me.

  • That is a very solid Blues side. Would be very foolish to underestimate them. I wonder what our side will look like…last game on tour with guys wanting to get home. Hope they up for a fight

  • @SheldonK (Comment 8) : Hope to see Timmy get the nod at 10 and shift Frans back to 12. Tim showed us that he has BMT on Saturday. Nonu is playing some good rugby for a change in the SR, and who better to stop him than Frans.

Tera, the 1 man loose trio, must surely get a start. Alberts at blindside with Kanko at 8.

That would pretty much be the changes I’d make.

  • @robdylan (Comment 5) : Do you think Frans’s defensive problems (20 missed tackles for the season already) comes from playing out of position at 10 with a new 12 about every week?

  • @gregkaos (Comment 10) : Its often the 10 defending on the 12 so I dont mind if Steyn stays at 10 and Jordaan, Sithole 12/13. Id like to see Mvovo back at 15 and Marais on the wing instead. Mthembu, Alberts and Kanko in the loose trio.

  • We can win this game on Friday…but we will have to be on top of our game. I hope last weekend’s result fills us with the confidence that we really can win the whole tournament, removes the fear of losing and finally pushes us to the top plateau…rather than gets us overconfident!! Come on men…give us a biggie!

  • So when exactly can we expect a Sharks team announcement?

There were no injuries, so surely it should have been announced early in the morning already….now we’ll probably have to wait until tomorrow morning.
