Super Sharks win again

The Cell C Sharks have extended their lead at the top of the Vodacom Super Rugby table by beating the Blues 29-23 in North Harbour.

Completing their first unbeaten tour of New Zealand since 2010, Jake White’s side have banked 13 log points from a possible 20 on tour, ensuring some reward at least from each of their four fixtures.

Today’s game showed just how much belief and guts there is in this team. A strong forward display laid the platform, with locks Stephan Lewies and Ettienne Oosthuizen again momentous, particularly on defence. It was the same Sharks game plan of subdue and penetrate and again they made life a little difficult for themselves at times, with a few poor kicks and some poor discipline preventing them from ever getting too far ahead.

In the first half, a great try to Bismarck du Plessis got them going – the captain crashing over after good initial work close in from Beast Mtawarira and S’bura Sithole. Frans Steyn nailed the conversion, plus two penalties and a drop goal to take the side to a good 16-6 lead as the whistle blew. The Blues had pulled back two penalties via Simon Hickey, but hadn’t made much of an impact with ball in hand, despite edging both possession and territory during the half.

The second period did not want for drama, with Jannie du Plessis – who was otherwise solid – copping a yellow card for multiple team indiscretions shortly after the break. Blues captain Luke Braid went over for a try shortly afterwards, making it a 3-point ball game, before Steyn had a further opportunity to stretch the lead out to 6 once more. Another brilliant break-out try by Cobus Reinach followed as Lewies hacked through behind a Blues ruck. The Sharks scrumhalf, for a second week running, out-sprinted everyone to turn a sniff of a chance into a good 7-pointer. With a 13-point lead, the game was the Sharks’ to lose.

Referee Nick Briant did his best to even matters up, showing a card to Frans Steyn for slowing the ball down and then allowing a Blues try despite a clear forward pass. With the home side back within 6 and the Sharks blowing hard, the writing seemed on the wall – fortunately the Blues infringed from the very next restart and SP Marais knocked over his first points for the Sharks at this level to restore some daylight. The Blues narrowed back to 6 minutes later, but simply couldn’t find that extra gear necessary and were forced to concede defeat to a Sharks team that threw everything they had into defence in those frantic last ten minutes.

Scores:

Blues (23): Tries Luke Braid, Tevita Li. Conversions Simon Hickey, Ihaia West. Penalties Hickey (2), West
Sharks (29): Tries Bismarck du Plessis, Cobus Reinach. Conversions Frans Steyn (2). Penalties Steyn (3), SP Marais. Drop-goal Steyn.

Seems even they’ve picked up on his anti-Sharks bias.

Wonder if Johny Smit had a few words with him after Mallet decided to publicly embarrassing him (and the Sharks) re: Plum’s termination of employment.

JS strikes me as the type to handle issues like that discretely, and not in the media.

@Uli Boelie (Comment 8) : Jannie was pinged on a team warning and I think it was fair enough. Steyn’s was not a shocker, but maybe a bit harsh for slowing the ball down.
@FireTheLooser (Comment 12) : I was quite vocal about those decision at first…having said that, there was a lot of scrumming in…it just looks as if the Blues loosehead was responsible for it a lot and never got pinged…

  • @pastorshark (Comment 25) : For the Sharks it is really a question of choosing between first, second and third place.

Win all remaining games and they could end up first on the log (they will probably need at least 1 bonus point), win two and they could end up 2nd, loose all three with losing bonus points and they are guaranteed 3rd place.

The list just goes on, its the impact a good Coach has on already talented players.
My highest argument with plum was he never brought the best in the players, and the sharks just coasted on natural talent.

  • @catfish (Comment 27) : @Seth101 (Comment 23) : @FireTheLooser (Comment 30) : My man of the match was Oosthuizen…of course, I remain a lock at heart!! But he was really good: 3 or 4 crucial turnovers at the breakdown, very solid defence and steady in the lineout. In my view, he has shown why JW has rated him highly. Paul Jordaan was monumental. I’ll be the first to admit that I was a bit worried about him and his defence at inside centre a few weeks ago when he was first picked there. But he didn’t miss a tackle…on the contrary, he thumped Nonu down time and again. Sbura was excellent again…one missed tackle that was almost costly, but otherwise excellent defence and that crucial mini break that set up Bismarck’s try. Tera was also great, Bismarck was good and Lewies is looking more and more like a lineout general. All in all, very solid rugby…a bit scrappy at stages, but no complaints here…

  • On the positive side:

Our defense was fantastic, both in line and at the breakdowns.
Forward and back interplay made a welcome comeback.
Our set piece game was solid.
Our bench has become as good as our run-on side.
    Much better territorial kicking.

    Negatives:

Poor discipline gifted the Blues points after just about every restart (after we scored).
    Too many missed tackles.

    Things to work on:

We still have problems under the high ball.
Cobus getting his kicks charged down in our 22 happens too often.
Alberts too static – he is marked closely.
Better concentration from Frans – kicking restarts out on the full is putting unnecessary pressure on us.

3 out of 4 on tour? I would have bet against it, had I been a betting man. That red card has turned our game around. It’s almost as if the old manne have found respect for the youngsters and visa versa. Last week was the first time we really played like a team and it has carried through.

There’s nothing stopping us from taking it right to the end, but our intensity will have to stay the way it is.

  • My biggest concern is we have to still play the Stormers home and away and the Cheetahs away. No matter that we managed to beat Crusaders away with 14 men and that both the Cheetahs and Stormers have at best been crap this year. These are games we can loose. Got to keep the focus and each player has to keep his game at 110% to get through to the home final. One small slip up and we are staring down an away quarter final.

  • I watched the game and must admit, why were both Kaino and Nonu allowed to tackle without using their arms. ( Butch James would have been carded for that type of tackle). Kaino nearly took Terror’s head off. Also felt the TMO must have been home grown, you always know something is amiss when the Kiwi comentators start making excussed why a try should be allowed. Compared to Mehrtens trying to explain why Reinachs try should have been disallowed. He bleated about there being a ref and an assistant Reff who hadn’t seen Steyn being off sides and knocking the ball on. His commentary was nauseating, and then to rub salt in the wounds he started trying to immitate a SAFFA accent. What a tosser. I am a bit biased as I still haven’t forgotten him giving the crowed the finger at Loftus.

  • Just a suggestion. maybe you should have an injury list link with a list that is regularly updated. I heard rumours that Lambie might be back in the squad in July and maybe even still play some super 15? Also what about PS du Toit? would be nice to have a reliable source. Unless there already is one that you could point me to?

  • @markp (Comment 67) : Well, for an away quarter final we’d need three big slip ups…because that means the Bulls would have to pass us. :) But a slip us could lead to us having to play a quarter final in the first place…so: agreed, we need to keep focus and win all three games.

  • @Dynamite (Comment 69) : I saw it that way too…was wondering why no one was saying anything about it…massive shoulders…the one on Tera into his face…and not a word from ref, touchies, commentators or in studio blokes…

  • @JD (Comment 74) : Had a couple of beers with Mehrts years ago…he went out with my wife’s cousin…to be honest, he was always a bit of a toss. But it’s good entertainment when a hometown commentator whinges and still loses…

  • @pastorshark (Comment 76) : ja sorry to say watching highlights today Steyn did knock the ball but then again their one try was from a forward pass so all things said 7-7 from incorrect decisions by the refs.

  • @pastorshark (Comment 75) : can’t see the Bulls finishing in first place on the log. Sharks only needs 4 points from their remaining 3 games and that’s if the Bulls score maximum points in their 3 games.

  • @JD (Comment 78) : Ja, he definitely knocked it…I said so while I was posting updates on matchday. The difference between our “try that wasn’t a try” and their “try that wasn’t a try” was the level of whinging from the commentators…and of course the fact that our try was allowed when the ref missed a knock that was difficult to pick up in real time while their try was allowed after a TMO studied a clear forward pass 20 times and still allowed the try!! :)

  • @JD (Comment 80) : I agree…so no chance that we’ll play an away quarter…that can only happen if the Bulls pass us and we end up 5th or 6th. No chance! But we could end up 3rd and have a home quarter. Rather not…let’s just win all our remaining games!! :)

  • @pastorshark (Comment 83) : Sharks needs to win at least 2 of their last games to finish in top two. Stormers game on Saturday and Cheetahs game is for me the 2 must win games for the Sharks.
