Tera knocking on Bok door

It’s not quite clear whether he’s been made an official member of the training squad or not, but Cell C Sharks flanker Tera Mtembu is certainly not a million miles away from Bok selection after some fantastic performance for the team in New Zealand over the last fortnight.

Mtembu was invited by coach Heyneke Meyer to join the squad yesterday once it became clear that Schalk Burger’s neck injury would prevent him from taking much part in the on-field proceedings. While his call-up appears to have been motivated by the need for short-term injury cover (and the fact that he was already in Durban can’t have hurt), it nevertheless shows that he’s at least on the Bok selectors’ radar.

We all know what a fantastic talent Tera is. Let’s hope this experience with the Boks motivates him further and that he will use the Currie Cup as a platform on which to build a serious claim for an end of year tour spot.

  • Good news, nothing like an invite to the training camp, to give an extra dollop of motivation!

  • Every time a Stormer sneezes a Shark gets invited to a Bok training camp. Can’t complain about that

  • The composition of our loose forwards for the Currie Cup is going to be quite interesting. With Alberts and Coetzee almost certainties for the Boks, Kankowski returning to Japan, and both Deysel and Daniel moving to Japan at the conclusion of Superugby, only Mtembu and Botes will be with the squad out of the current crop of Superugby players. And Botes is also on the brink probably of retiring. Some younger players will get a big opportunity this year.

  • @Argex (Comment 4) : Botes, Meyer, Mtembu

That’s my Currie Cup combo. Kleinhans and Majola as alternates.

  • Tera is a strong ball carrier and really pulled his weight when given the opportunity

  • @robdylan (Comment 13) : And with Jake only seeming to rate oosthuizen and lewies out of all the locks and with the possibility of lewies playing rugby championship, Dan could also very well get a look in

  • @woody (Comment 14) : we’ll be in shit if Lewies gets a genuine bok call-up.

Dan du Preez is no 5.

Maybe Koegies is the guy who will come in.

  • @robdylan (Comment 19) : I bet he’ll be able to make a lot more money overseas and get decent playing time.

Will he be going for Bangers & mash, Snails or Sushi? Or maybe even Pasta?

(see what I did, now you can spill the beans without saying anything  )

  • I cant realistically see Terra craking the Bok 23 unless there a quite a few injuries. And no disrepect to Terra who has done well in a couple games but surely guys like Deon Fourie and Heinrich Brussouw should be getting a shot ahead of him, even Warren Whitely, Boom Prinsloo etc.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 21) : That tiny little mud island is pretty much covered under bangers and mash….

I’ll add Guiness though, as Irish Stew (commonly known as boiled-up spud broth) is a bit too obvious ;-)

  • @SheldonK (Comment 22) : Heinrich has been invited to the training camp. Doesn’t look like the other three you mention fit into Meyer’s plans although I’d dearly love to see Whitely there. Doubt Terra will crack the final squad but you never know.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 27) : Yeh look i was just mentioning guys and i dont even think a guy like Heinrich will play but you never know. I think Terra is pretty much a place filler as HM would have had drills drawn up that require a certain number of players so its merely a stop gap than anything.

  • @Sheldonk(Comment30)I think Meyer just wanted to have a closer look for the future and advise him where to improve, this happened to Schrouder last year and he was called up ahead of other SH we thought were better than him.Tera has attributes to play all three lossie positions. Whiteley was unlucky he is one of the best in SR
