Something old, something new for Meyer

Heyneke Meyer’s 36-man Springbok squad, named on Saturday night for the upcoming June international season, features 7 uncapped players as well as a fair few old hands from days gone bye.

S’bura Sithole – in a rare piece of positive news for beleaguered Sharks fans – made the final cut as one of theuncapped group, also comprising Damian de Allende, Lood de Jager, Cornall Hendricks, Oupa Mohoje, Marcell van der Merwe and Callie Visagie.

The last-named will likely play a backup role to Bismarck du Plessis and Schalk Brits, with the Saracens hooker earning a recall to the test fray after another brilliant season up North. Schalk Burger and Victor Matfield predictably return after spells in the wilderness, while Mayer has raised eyebrows by including former Bulls Zane Kirchner and Gurthro Steenkamp, along with some more “expected” foreigners in Bakkies Botha, Fourie du Preez, Bryan Habana, Francois Louw and Ruan Pienaar.

Meyer has yet to announce his captain. Meanwhile, it has emerged that de Allende is an injury doubt following Saturday’s brusing derby between the Sharks and the Stormers.

  • I think the “something borrowed” (the foreign legion) and “something blue” are kind of obvious.

  • I am still wondering what Meyer is thinking with Visagie when Burden and Britz are two of the top hookers in Europe right now. If I had to choose between the 2 I would go for the guy who flattened the other one twice ;-)

  • @lostfish (Comment 5) : Agreed. Why not Lewies instead of e Jager? Does HM have a grudge against JW or vice versa? v/d Merwe instead of Adriaanse?de Allende instead of Jordaan? When will SP Marais get a look in instead of Zane (yawn) Krschner?I would send Cooper instead of Visagie!!! I would also send Kockott instead of Hougaard or du Preez. Thats my 10 cents worth for now.

  • Another Bok squad, another squad covered in blue where there are other players far more deserving.

There are a lot of players who are deserving who are there but there are several players that one has to go WTF!! Dispensing with provincialism, you could seriously question the validity of Zane Kirchner and Callie Visagie being there. Admittedly their chances of actually making the Bok team are slim to none.

Morne Steyn was always going to be there but the fact that he was hardly a starter for Stade and that when he played he sometimes wasn’t even given kicking duties is another joke. Morne is only there for his kicking and international level is not the place to play guys into form.

  • @markm (Comment 6) : With Bakkies, Matfield and Flip there, de Jager will just carry tackle bags. I would rather have Lewies practising with the Sharks in the break.

  • @lostfish (Comment 5)Lets be fair to HM re:Lewies and Lood, Lood has been consistent through out two seasons,de allende is better than Jordaan,v/d Merwe has played more mins JW to blame, how many mins has cooper played this season. But re SP I am with you.

  • I agree with @chippa on this one….lood’s been playing well for awhile. Don’t think its even necessary to explain de allende, he’s the one back who stick up his hand this season.(105kg monster who can play 12/13 and wing). V/d merwe as a 5th prop is a good one, he can play both 1and3. Also been a good impact of the bench with some tries. Adriaanse hardly played this season. Same with cooper, callie is there because he already throw the ball into the lineouts for vic/flip.

  • @gregkaos (Comment 17) : The guys are dropping like flies, poor fella should have played like the Sharks Springboks, then he wouldn’t have had any risk of injury.

Apparently the captain/father-figure will be announced today….pappa Vic wag vir die bokke.

  • F#%& I only now notice that Morne Steyn is in the squad (no real interest on my part) I thought he was injured / licking his wounds after a woeful season in France.
