Who will it be?

Finally a break from Super Rugby and the champions should be already in the top 3, I reckon. The break has come a week too late for the Sharks who have set the pace in this year’s edition of Super Rugby.

The Waratahs and Crusaders winning their game in hands against play-off chasing Brumbies and Hurricanes respectively could see the Sharks drop to third and relinquish the advantage they worked for all season.

All top ten sides are in contention to make the play-offs and the final run will commence on the 27th for our Australasia counterparts.

The Waratahs and Crusaders look set to finish strong as they give an impression of peaking at the right time. ( How will the break benefit their form? ) Nadolo, Slade and McNicholl have been pivotal for the New Zealand outfit. Folau and Foley have been key for the Tahs. They look likely to meet in the final.

Banana skins in the road as of the other seven sides the Bulls will really need a miracle. They have been inconsistent and likely to be challengers next year. Surprise package the Force need another run of wins to get a first-time play off spot. The Brumbies are also in a similar position and will require a good run. Albeit they both face fellow play-off hopefuls.

South Africa have one contender in the Sharks and the franchise should atleast make the semi-finals and from there on anything is possible.

The Hurricanes, Hammett’s swan song could see the Wellington outfit finally show their quality and be real contenders. Their display against reigning champions Chiefs was a warning but they won’t have enough in the tank.

If the Highlanders and Blues manage to manoeuvre their way past tricky fixture they could seal play off spots. Champions Chiefs have to re-group and hopefully they will return to their old ways. A fiver against the Highlanders on the Super Rugby return could find them in the mix.

Top perfomers have been : Reinach, Steyn, Slade, Fekitoa, Sias and Barrett.
I think it will finish : Waratahs, Sharks, Crusaders, Chiefs, Hurricane and Highlanders in the play- offs.

  • The scary part is, the Waratahs and Crusaders each have 2 home games remaining. Sharks will end 3rd because they wont get 5 pointers from their last games because they cant score tries.

  • The Crusaders have three derbies remaining – hopefully the Canes or the Highlanders can knock them off. Alternatively if the Crusaders can be limited to no bonus points, and the Sharks win all remaining games it will be down to points difference as both will end on 53 and have won the same number of games.

Likewise we will have to hope the Brumbies or Reds can do a Lions on the Waratahs, although I have to say they must be the current favourite to win the competition.

The problem Jake will have is that his Bok players will have been involved in 4 internationals (always tough nowadays). Does he send a full strength team to Bloem, or rest a couple of Boks?

  • My two cents worth. Jake always knew that around 10-12 of our players will be in the Springbok side. HM is only worried about winning and therefore he will use most of them in the three tests and the world team match. They will then come back (please no injuries!) and have to perform at peak level to play in the two remaining S15 games and the semi’s and hopefully the final. This might mean 8 or more intense matches for guys like Willem , Frans, Bissie, Jannie and Beast etc…..
Why did Jake not consider a rotational system like Brendon employed? We have a huge squad barring injuries.

  • Rest players? We have a habit of not getting points against non contenders. (Sharks).

Cheetahs could reenact that bogey side of them. Goosen farewell. Who knows?
With a packed schedule of internationals. It could go either way. Hope the derbies favor us in NZ and Tahs slip up.

  • @bchanakira2 (Comment 4) : We can play our first choice players into the ground and end third regardless, or we can rest a few key players to have them fresh by the playoffs.

If we have Deysel and Lambie / Fred back in July, I cannot see why Jake can’t rest Alberts and Frans. Likewise bench Jannie, Bismarck and Beast who I do expect to feature in all 4 internationals.

  • We are playing the last game of the last round so we will know exactly what will be needed to end where. That will probably work out as the game to rest tired legs

  • Now I respect the NZ sabbatical idea even more. Players will be finished by World Cup.

  • @bchanakira2 (Comment 5) : He hasn’t impressed me as captain.

He has no idea how to play ref politics, he gets drawn into niggles by super rugby noobs in the opposition and his general play has gone backward since he took the reigns.

When we beat the Crusaders everyone lauded his leadership, but in reality it was the first time that all the senior players in the side pitched up and led from the front.

  • Looks as if we lost our final this past saturday already.

If we can`t win super rugby with this squad and Jake White, we never will I`m afraid.

  • So you place Reinach and Steyn in your top performers of the season list??

You are extremely easy to please then. They are primary contributors to our terrible attack!

f you had said Sithole and Lewies it would have been believable!

  • @JarsonX (Comment 1) : Pat Lambie is returning. Our team is a try scoring machine when he is at pivot.

  • @JD (Comment 12) : Im one of those guys. I know what the Sharks are doing. I am enjoying their wins and their position on the log. I rejoice with our wins and Im down when we lose. I gather very little visual enjoyment from watching the Sharks play though. Winning ugly is fine for a while but then the team better make sure they actually win the whole damn competition.

  • @money (Comment 15) : I did, and Im sure it will make a difference and hopefully we can employ a more expansive gameplan but I think at this stage of the competition that might be hoping for a bit much. Time will tell.

  • @ JD (Comment 12) : I’m one of them too. I/we have and will always support the team no matter what but there is no place for mediocrity. I wont Care if we win the final 3 – 0, but we’ve got to get there first and if we play like we did on Saturday, then we wont.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 14) : One cannot accuse the Sharks of recent years of entertaining the fans too often. However bring home the trophy and not a soul will care how it was done.

Well, at least we will have Christchurch.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 14) : I’m with you on that. I support the Sharks and the Bokke, but courtesy of Jake White and Heyneke Meyer I’ve pretty much stopped watching the games. The pleasure I derive from reading a winning score in the paper is more or less the same as what I would get from watching the game, I find.

  • As all do mostly they whisper the real star of a team ; lewies, etc and praise the points and glory boys. Christchurch was glorius. We gotta rely of teams to stop the Crusaders and Tahs. #once

  • @JarsonX (Comment 17) : Sharks had a bad game after a long and very hard tour!!!! Now it’s two away games in SA and at worst then a home game before two away games. No traveling all over the world like in 2012!!!!!
