Beast dropped ahead of first test

In a rather bizarre move, former Bulls player Gurthro Steenkamp had been rewarded with a 50th test cap – starting ahead of Beast Mtawarira at loosehead prop in the Springbok team named to face Wales in the first test in Durban on Saturday. Steenkamp was poor against the World XV at Newlands last week, conceding numerous scrum penalties in the second half.

Coach Heyneke Meyer has made a few other changes to his side; Frans Steyn’s shock walk-out has opened the door for Jan Serfontein to start at inside centre, while Fourie du Preez comes in at scrumhalf ahead of Ruan Pienaar.

Cornal Hendricks makes a first test start at right wing, while Lood de Jager stands to make his test debut off the bench as well.

South Africa: 15 Willie le Roux, 14 Cornal Hendricks, 13 JP Pietersen, 12 Jan Serfontein, 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Morne Steyn, 9 Fourie du Preez, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Willem Alberts, 6 Francois Louw, 5 Victor Matfield (capt), 4 Bakkies Botha, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Bismarck du Plessis (v/capt) 1 Gurthro Steenkamp
Subs: 16 Schalk Brits, 17 Tendai Mtawarira, 18 Coenie Oosthuizen, 19 Lood de Jager, 20 Schalk Burger, 21 Ruan Pienaar, 22 Johan Goosen, 23 Lwazi Mvovo

  • HM gone completely mad? Guthro was lucky to be on the bench IMO.

  • So the trick with HM is: When you perform poorly, I’ll give you another shot to regain your form.

That angle has been doing wonders for Ruan Pienaar and Morné Steyn.

  • @Mutley (Comment 4) : None of the first 3 should be playing, they all DESERVE a rest after giving and giving and giving for the last 4 or 5 years to both the Boks and Sharks. If we play them in these nothing tests then we risk going to the World Cup with a fatigued front row

Agreed about Steenkamp. I’d have liked Oosthuizen at LH, Adriaanse at TH and maybe Herbst as reserve TH. I’m also not sure about Nyakane being in the squad and I don’t know enough about the Bulls props to comment.

  • Guthro struggled against Pat Cilliers (who was never known as a great scrummager himself). I can only imagine how one of those hairy Jenkins blokes from the valleys will fold him.

Guthro was always more of a threat will ball in hand – which he is no longer either.

  • Gurthro?! Holy shite, HM has lost it. He isn’t even the 4th best loosehead in the country.

Also, probably the shittest looking Bok backline Ive seen in the last decade.
Thank goodness I’ve given my season tickets to my old man for this one.

And then Gurthro…again i think only reason he is being selected is for his milestone cap thats it. He was poor last week. He looks unfit and out of shape and if we gift Wales penalties then we are in shite!

  • A real pity the Bok coach has to rest players because their provincial coach refuses to. Jannie should get a break next week. Don’t know if Bissie will ever get a break this year from anyone.

I would still not pick Gurthro and Pienaar, as I could think of at least 4 players per posibtion, in SA who are better or more experienced.

The rest of the side, given how they performed against the World XV, looks quite good.

  • Choosing from the 36 man squad.

    South Africa:
15 Willie le Roux, 14 Lwazi Mvovo, 13 JP Pietersen, 12 Jan Serfontein, 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Morne Steyn, 9 Fourie du Preez, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Willem Alberts, 6 Francois Louw, 5 Victor Matfield (capt), 4 Bakkies Botha, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Bismarck du Plessis (v/capt) 1 Coenie Oosthuizen

Subs: 16 Schalk Brits, 17 Tendai Mtawarira, 18 Marcel van der Merwe, 19 Lood de Jager, 20 Schalk Burger, 21 Ruan Pienaar, 22 Johan Goosen, 23 .S’Bura

I would bench Jannie but there is no other options in the squad. I also think JP had a good game at 13 last week. S’Bura covers 13 and wing. Pienaar can cover 12 if need be. Marcel van der Merwe is better than Gurthrö. Goosen is not ready to start,

  • If I were a bok quality player I would skip HM and his circus completely for the next 2 years and gain experience internationally then come back to play for my franchise when required. I am not even watching springboks just waiting for supers to resume and then curry cup.

  • He “managed” the Bulls out of all their talent and he will do the same for SA Rugby. It’s not too late to fire him and give Jake White or Brendan Venter the job.
