    Cheer up.

Our juniors have experienced beating NZ, three years in a row. These guys will filter into the senior ranks and start to challenge the hegemon of rugby in the near future.

Our senior Bok team are developing a winning culture and expanding their game-plan in the face of injuries and adversity.

They didn’t change anything. They took control because the Kiwis were worn down and started to make mistakes.

It’s how the game plan works.
-you kick it to them. they run it back. you tackle them behind the advantage line.
-repeat a few times and they will get tired, play in their half and pounce on mistakes.

  • Funny I missed all the “excitement” that took place here yesterday. I’m actually really happy we won, our rugby was seriously impressive, both in the senior and junior division. The junior wings were having a terrible game though. And I for one love greef’s energy since the first game when he outplayed the poor scots and I’ve liked sergeal from his first game for the kings he’s a talented boy, but yesterday he had a horrible game as far as defense were concerned and the previous game he had a similar off game against somoa. In the senior side I’d say willie was amazing seriously he’s by far the most exciting springbok player at the moment (there may be more if HM would only give them chance jinne… The youngsters are the ones that excited in the boks team). But (being a HUGE sharks fan) I have to say the sharks players looked dull in this team. Jannie, bissie, and especially jpp (think its time he be dropped for the exciting sbura/tollie), were all playing as if they needed to sleep a bit shame man. The bone crusher worked tirelessly though, executing wonderful tackles and beast should never be benched for gurthro again. But despite all that, the boys played awesome rugby and hopefully (that’s a big hopefully) HM will begin to experiment with more youngsters, since he has a lot of senior players to back them up. Like for instance, Lood came off the bench and he was a monster. I can see us taking a world cup with him, PSDT and eben in one team. They would destroy every opposition. Anyway, this was a great weekend a very great weekend of rugby. Sharks are running on empty, drop them or play them from the bench (although don’t drop beast for guthro that is just sinful), please HM please asseblief man

  • @fyndraai (Comment 69) : I think we won despite our kicking game, not because of it. When we kept ball in hand we made the Baby Blacks look ordinary.

The only time one of those up and unders actully worked the entire game was when the ball got tapped back and Petersen caught it with an open line in front of him.

90% of all the other kicks did nothing but force us to defend and put us under pressure. I’ll be a happy dumbass if we stopped doing that in SA rugby.

  • @JD (Comment 77) :

They kept the ball in hand because they played mostly in the NZ half already. They played mostly in the NZ half already because the run-back tactic on the Kiwis were not as effective as in the 1st half. Perhaps the kicks or the tackling improved or perhaps the Kiwis just grew tired from all the running.

Either way, the kicking decreased because the need for it decreased.

You confuse a change of circumstances with a change of plan.

  • @fyndraai (Comment 81) : yes it will, but the team chasing the kick is also running so don’t they get tired? !?! Bokkies had a way better second have and changes to the players produced better results! !!! Baby Blacks were outplayed in the last 10min.

  • @JD (Comment 82) :

Ball carriers and their support runners have to run larger distances than defenders.

If you don’t believe me draw yourself some pictures. They have to run towards space. They have to angle, curve and change direction. Defenders may run the straight line, or the shortest distance, to their target (see Euclid).

As long as the defending is by choice (game-plan) and not by necessity (being dominated at set pieces and collisions), the defending team will expend less energy than the attacking team.

  • @fyndraai (Comment 73) : That only works if your defence is up to it. For a while I thought the Bokkies really do not want to win the game – Kiwis ran through them like a hot knife through butter.

Still a good result to beat NZ twice at home.

  • @Talent (Comment 61) : Unfortunately once Lambie and PSDT got injured, the Sharks cannot be accused of entertaining the fans. The best match since was the Crusaders, but that was more about the sheer bloody mindedness of the team refusing to give up.

I must say the Boks are playing a nice balanced brand of rugby, although I suspect if you remove Willie from the equation the attack will be seriously blunted.

  • And my apologies to Guthro to doubting his scrum abilities, although I still believe there are some SA based players that could add the same to the Bok equation.
