Rugby taking a back seat?

You guys may have noticed that there’s a somewhat different sporting event on the go – one which might just be taking a little bit of emphasis away from rugby at the moment!

I’m of course referring to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, where the globe’s top football teams are currently slogging it out over the greatest prize in that game – the right to be called the world’s best for the next four years.

Are you guys at all interested in the games going on over in Brazil? Perhaps with a little more useful sports info to hand, you could take the opportunity to at least wager a little money on some of the outcomes, even if there is no particular affiliation to any of the teams playing.

What do you think? Who would you back as favourites to take the cup at this stage? Or is this one of those tournaments that you’re happy to ignore in the knowledge that rugby is still very much in the offing?

  • I am a sports slut I watch everything, from rugby to football, golf to tennis, I really enjoyed the recent Hockey World Cup both men’s and woman’s events. The golf was great this weekend showing that Germany is not just a football team. At the moment there are 4 teams capable of winning the World Cup Germany, Netherlands, Brazil and Argentina. Spain can recover to join the mix. But I think those 4 will be the semi final teams this time. Germany will take some beating.

  • I always struggled to get into soccer but in the spirit of the 2010 World Cup I attended one Conferdation’s Cup game and two 2010 World Cup games. I had tickets for three World Cup games but gave away the third game’s tickets to a friend even though I payed a pretty penny for them. Had to sign a police affidavit in order to give them away. Still don’t regret it. Soccer is just, so, very, boring. The most boring rugby matches excite me more than pretty much any soccer game does.

  • Football or soccer must adapt and change their scoring count. It will make it a far better sport to support. Rugby and cricket games go down to the last minute because of a scoring system which can swing the game in seconds. But soccer…if you are down by 2 in the final 5 minutes it’s almost certainly time to throw bottles at the opposition supporters.

Must say that while there has been some fantastic goals the incessant ‘falling-down-milking-penalties-Habanna-acting-crying’ kak puts me off completely. Until football can short that shit I will never be a fan.

  • I used to be a HUGE Soccer fan, growing up in Italy it couldn’t be any other way. And I was an avid supporter right up to 2006 until all this diving became endemic to the game, now I really could not be bothered. I was forced to watch the Germany game (my son’s girlfriend’s step dad is the only German I truly like, (I detest Germany in all its forms, barring Dieter and Schumacher who had the good sense to drive an Italian car ;) ) and Mueller’s pathetic dive made their win even more unpalatable to me :( Giggs saying he was within his rights to go down, just proved what is wrong with the game of soccer! and why I chose Rugby after years of watching Soccer with my dad!

JD how can you hate Brazil? Its truly beautiful to watch their skill, nothing like the mechanic over structured games of the Germans, Dutch and Belgians, The Brazilians make the game beautiful.

With regards to Muller if you put your hands in a guys face and then go and lead with your head into his face you take chances of being carded! Soccer is not a contact sport and the refs don’t play if a player seems to headbutt another player. just check how easy a certain Portugal player falls in the penalty area.

  • @robdylan (Comment 71) : Same here. England is my home now. They are my 1st Football side, and 2nd Rugby and Cricket side.

If I did not support them I’m not sure this place would ever feel totally like home for me. Wouldn’t be able to enjoy a packed pub cheering on the side, discuss tactics with an enthusiastic cab driver, or even whinge about the denied goals with mates.

Oh and if not England I would like to see Belgium go all the way.

  • @rhineshark (Comment 73) : it’s your choice to support any team you feel like. I just stated how I feel about it.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 75) : Not particularly but they are head and shoulders above their fellow soccer supporters. They are bad losers and even worse winners.

  • @Sharksmad – The Blog’s Dudette (Comment 70) : this is how I feel and others will have their own opinion. …. if you decide to move to a new country and live there for a prolonged period you must adapt to their “culture” and support their teams. Nothing worse than a person alway telling you how good his “old” country was.

  • @lostfish (Comment 78) : But I am kinda generalising. It is the few that make it unpleasant for the many so they all get lumped into the same bucket. Much like any Bulls fan is a Matfield worshipping beer bellied raging dutchman ;-)

  • @lostfish (Comment 81) : it’s also the few that got them kicked out of UEFA soccer competition for a while, so all in all maybe not such a bad generalisation.

  • Seems as if Spain will follow in the foot steps of Italy, defending world champions not making it out of the group stages.

  • Soccer – 90 minutes of pretending to be hurt.

Rugby – 80 minutes of pretenting NOT to be hurt.

  • @JD (Comment 87) : Hokkie bokkies usually a bit on the ‘large’ side in my experience.

However the recent hockey world cup (and olympics) slowly changing my mind.

But for now, lang bene, kort rokkies, and netball is still tops.

  • @McLovin (Comment 89) : then you’d just love beach volleyball! !!! I watch hockey for the skills of the players and the speed of the game. Rugby players can learn a lot of running into space by watching hockey.
