  • 1. That 99.99999% of the time would have been called a good tackle.
    2. There is no way anyone could say a try would of been scored, not to hand the trailing team a win.

SA won the game with two very very soft penalty tries, and that imho is a disgrace.

No, I’m not celebrating a near loss. I am simply saying that this will be a wake-up call to the boys and hopefully will serve as a platform to launch from into the Rugby Championship.

  • That victory can be summed up in one word: LUCKY

We really dodged the bullet today…if the shoe was on the other foot, and we had to lose in this manner to the AB’s, I’d be feeling rather aggrieved.

Thankfully that Welsh player decided to come in with an illegal tackle, and thankfully those two Welsh players decided to infringe rather than have the try be scored.

But in no way did we win because of a superior performance tonight. Seems the seniors and foreign legion had one good game in them, and we saw that one last weekend.

But, ultimately, I’m very happy that our record is intact….will this game serve as a timely wake-up call to HM – probably not.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 94) : Fair point. Rather it happen now than during the RC, though. I said it will probably serve as a wake up call, but it may not. I don’t think this is the worst thing either way. We managed to pull what you may call an ‘All Black’ by coming from way behind to keep our record intact. It reminded ME of the Ireland vs. NZ game in November. There are many negatives, but there are certainly some positives too. Another one being that we scored 4 tries, never mind the nature of said tries.

Just really hope today was not a sign of things to come, but rather of the wake-up call you talked about.

  • @Seth101 (Comment 72) : sorry to say but you’re dreaming boet. Both penalty tries were well deserved. First one they repeatedly stopped the Bok maul illegally and Bokke would have definitely scored if they did not, the second one their player made no attempt to use his arms when tackling (with last time I checked was illegal in rugby) so once again a penalty try was correctly given. Stopping a try from being scored by illegal means must result in a penalty try!!!! Nothing soft in awarding of the penalty tries!!!!!

  • I Interested to hear how you guys think a rolling mall in that situation can be defended. My grips with the rolling mall rules are not only with this game. Personally I see know legal way for a well set rolling mall to ever be defended. And you can’t claim that is a benifit of having a stronger pack, because yesterday we didn’t have the stronger pack.

And I am sorry but I will never conseed that a penalty try should have been given at the end there, not due to rules but due to consistancy. I have seen soooo many corner tackles that have been more a dive at the player with your body then tacke with arms. If Hendricks hadn’t whined about it the ref wouldn’t have even noticed. He defender had no reason to try and hurt the guy, all he was trying to do was get him out, I would bet everything I have he didn’t raise his shoulder diliberatly to hurt the guy it was more just to stop himself getting hurt.

Any way the game was won by the Boks, they just can’t be expecting to when on penalty tries every time they play. And honestly I don’t think Meyer will take a single thing out of this game, nothing has convinced him before why should it now? I’m sorry to say it but will are going to lose to the AB’s, both when we play them in the Championship, and next year if we play em in the world cup.

  • @Seth101 (Comment 104) : Rolling mauls can been defended. Usually the teams who employ them most successfully are the same ones who defend them well. I agree, a strong set of forwards isn’t the only factor as you point out, you need a good technique executed accurately.

Regarding the cover tackle, I myself have not seen very many corner tackles without arms involved that have gone unpunished (can’t think of a single case to be honest). Also remember that intent cannot be factored into these situations. The tackle is illegal regardless of whether Williams meant to harm Cornal or not.

Lastly and I may be misunderstanding you on this point, but it’s not like the Boks are squeaking by or relying on penalty tries for each of their victories. We must keep in mind that SA had very little say in the awarding of the penalty tries. They played their game, attempted to score, Wales cynically infringed and the ref decided that it warranted a penalty try. We can’t be mad at Meyer or the Boks for those decisions.

  • Rob and Seth, while I don’t like any team to win through the awarding of penalty tries, honestly, with the second penalty try, there was simply no question, and Walsh in fact had no choice. It was a matter of law, once the tackle was determined to be illegal, which it clearly was, the law says take that player out of the equation completely and if a try would have been scored it is a penalty try. There is no doubt that without that player there, he was going to score, he was free of the previous tackler, and was moving in a direction infield and toward the goal line. His momentum would clearly have carried him in goal, and not into touch. Sorry that is not a soft penalty try, but one according to the laws of the game. If you don’t like the laws that’s fine, but not fair to blame the ref or call it a soft penalty try. :-)

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 107) : The problem was it was a complete and utter brain explosion by the Welsh 15, he could have easily tackled him perfectly legally and still bundled him into touch. He was there in plenty of time, and just had to go a little lower and open his arms. If the tackler bundles the player in his arms, even if the head is part of the package, the ref will rarely call a high tackle. Clearly Hendricks was diving into goal, so his head was very low, but the Welsh 15 clearly made contact with his elbow first.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 102) : @vanmartin (Comment 103) : Wales played a great vame but the 10 min before half time and the last 10 min cost them the game. Maybe it’s cause they realised they could beat the Bokke and the moment just got to them or maybe it’s cause the Bokke just upped their game?!?!?! Just hope this is a wakeup call for HM cause NZ wouldn’t make the same mistakes! !

  • @Seth101 (Comment 104) : personally I think 80% of rolling mauls are obstruction.
    1. If the maul is going forwards and new players join the maul the ball must be channelled to them and not like what’s happening now the ball carrier just slides to the back and they roll on.
    2. Lots of time the ma chance direction to where no opposition players are in front of the maul, that is obstruction. The front of the maul should be in contact with opposition players at all times.
    3. Best way for me to defend a maul is to stand off and let them pass the ball to th back before making contact.

  • @JD (Comment 110) : Also saw Matfield passing the ball backward while in the air (before his feet was on the ground) this is also obstruction.

Your point number 2 is incorrect – It should be in contact initially, but while moving, it can move side to side, with opposition players breaking off and falling off (which eventually ends up with no opposition player joined to the ruck). Though, the player at the back (ball in hand) cannot break away, with one or two players acting as a shield for him.

(hard to explain in words only, but a basic outline)

  • @JD (Comment 114) :

As long as his full arm connects or another player is bound to him he may move inside the maul.

The way to defend mauls is to put more players in, bind tight and wide to keep it from moving and have a tall bloke work his way up the middle.

  • @fyndraai (Comment 116) : lots of time they “glide” to the back without really binding to the maul. To add to your defence of a ma is a low body position (almost a scrum position).

Also, I can’t stand Warren Gatland but kudo’s to him for admitting that there was nothing wrong with the penalty try.
