Stephan Lewies has been called up to join the Springbok squad for this weekend’s Test match against Scotland – and what’s more, the 22-year-old Sharks lock might find himself earning a cap which would have seemed almost impossible at the start of the season.
SA Rugby have confirmed that both Flip van der Merwe and Beast Mtawarira have been ruled out due to injuries – although the seriousness of both has not yet been revealed. With van der Merwe out of the running, Victor Matfield and Lood de Jager join Lewies as the only recognised locks in the squad. Young de Jager is now surely set for a maiden start in the number 4 jersey, but unless Heyneke Meyer opts for a makeshift lock option on the bench, Lewies is now odds on to find himself named in the number 19 jersey.
Finding a prop replacement for Beast is going to be the bigger headache, though. Gurthro Steenkamp is unavailable for the match, leaving only Trevor Nyakane as a recognized loose head in the squad. Meyer may well look to change his thinking on Coenie Oosthuizen, though and pick him in the number 1 jersey, leaving Nyakane and uncapped Marcel van der Merwe to do duty on the bench.Tweet
