Sharks slip down the rankings

It’s not just on the Super Rugby log that the Sharks have lost ground; their unexpected (and perhaps catastrophic) loss to the Stormers late last month have taken a fair bit of gloss off their title hopes in the eyes of the men who live or die by getting results right.

I’m talking about the bookmakers, of course. Once firm favourites to lift the trophy, odds on the Sharks claiming the Super Rugby silverware this season have lengthened, with most betting sites now viewing them as about half as likely to do so than new favourites, the Waratahs and Crusaders. If you’re the sort of person who enjoys betting on rugby, then you could make a nifty profit if the Sharks do manage to storm back into contention over the next few weeks.

Three-to-one against sounds like a good way to make some easy money; then again so much of what’s going to happen is outside of your control, so exercise due caution.

Bookies, Morné and Keo – don’t you dare back the Sharks for a win

  • If I was the betting kind I would definitely put my money on the Sharks. They have been in a much worse position before! If the Sharks do not win, I’d put the Waratahs Waaaaay ahead of the Crusaders. Having said that, I still hope the Brumbies beat the Tahs and the Hurricanes beat the Crusaders. No bonus poits for losers.
Had Frans just scored the penalty he missed or had McLeod just kicked the ball RIGHT out after 80 mins – against WP – we would not have to HOPE like this!
    Bring back Lambie!

  • @JD (Comment 8) : I have that same feeling! The week before the Stormers match I wore black and white the entire week and we lost :( Last week I wore my “Azzurro” and Italy lost! So from this week onwards I will be alternating between baby blue and Stormers blue!

  • The job of the odds maker is not to predict the outcome of the game, it’s to track and anticipate the betting pattern of the punters.

The change in odds reflect a change of sentiment among gamblers, who are (given the nature of gambling) a collective of below average intelligence.

  • We can only hope the Waratahs and Crusaders drops one game each.

Winning from 3rd on the log is very, very unlikely.

    In a situation where it’s Waratahs 1, Crusaders 2, Sharks 3 …

We’d have to play Force/Brumbies/Highlanders in a ‘quarter final’ at home, which we should win, but then we’ll have to fly to Christchurch and beat the Crusaders, who would have had the weekend of and then if we win that game, go to Australia to beat the Waratahs in the final???

    Not impossible, just highly unlikely.

  • @Letgo (Comment 11) :

If at least one of them drops one game, we could still end 2nd, which would help a lot. We wouldn’t have to play the extra game. We would play the semi’s at home and would still be in with an outside chance of the 1st place team losing and giving us a home final.

Still some chances, but winning our own games will be the least of our problems before the play-offs. Will have to keep a close eye on the tahs and Crusaders and hope for a lack of concentration on their side.

  • @Sharksmad – The Blog’s Dudette (Comment 9) : don’t forget the white and orange. … but on second thought please skip the orange as I would like the Netherlands to win a couple of games. ;-)
