Sharks to “get the balance right”

Jake White has hinted at a possible change of approach ahead of the Cell C Sharks’ last two regular season Super Rugby matches. A shock loss to the Stormers at Kings Park in their last outing has put a serious dent in the side’s home semi-final ambitions.

“There are some decisions to make,” White told the Sharks website. “One is whether we go hammer and tongs and play the guys who have carried a heavy work load – but that comes with a risk, because if you don’t qualify for a home semi-final, then you end up having over-played some players going into the final stages of the competition. If you don’t play your strongest team you create a perception, and I want to stress that it is a perception, that your weaker team is not good enough to win, which is not fair on the players.

“So the challenge for us it to get the balance right between giving ourselves a fair crack at getting a home semi, but at the same time, making sure that if we don’t get a home semi, our players are all fit and available for the play-offs.”

White has thus far resisted the temptation to tinker with his winning combination, meaning a huge toll placed on the bodies of several senior players, many of whom have been subjected to more of the same in Springbok colours over the last month.

The Sharks look likely to bolstered by the return of Pat Lambie, who will definitely be fit for the return Stormers game, but also looks good for the match against the Cheetahs a week before that. Countering that news, though, is the likelihood that Beast Mtawarira and Willem Alberts – both of whom have carried a heavy Bok workload – will need to sit out at least some part of the next month’s action.

  • He should have probably started rotating earlier, but I like the idea to start trusting the fringe players.

  • If the Crusaders and Waratahs lose this weekend, I think we might see this idea of using ‘fringe’ players by Jake White, fall out the window.

He’s only thinking of this, because, at this stage, even winning both our games with bonus points, won’t get us any further than 3rd on the log. And losing both won’t make any difference either. So he has to be thinking of resting a few players – that is, if the Crusaders and/or Waratahs don’t lose this weekend.

  • Beast, Jannie, Bissie, Alberts, JPP (to a lesser extent) surely needs some rest though. These guys have been playing non stop since the first game. Give them all 2 weeks off.

Let Dale, Kyle, Adriaanse, Deysel and Odwa (who I believe will be back from injury?) do the job for us in these last two games.

The rest of the team have all gotten a good rest with this international window. Even Mvovo and the rest of the guys with the Bok team, would be fine to play, since they haven’t been involved much.

  • Hopefully Fred Z will be ready as well, coupled with a rested Sburra, Jordaan, Steyn and Mvovo. Chadwick should be able to stand in well for Beast, he has been playing well when given chance this year ( I can’t believe I just said that! ). Hopefully Jannie gets a bit of a rest as well. Deysel should offset the loss of Alberts. Bissie is the one I am most worried about, but then again, no one puts Bissie in the corner

  • @Letgo (Comment 6) : Actually, Steyntjie could probably start right?

If he’s ready – move every one up one position, have SP/Odwa on the bench in place of Jaco v Tonder.

  • I think that’s actually a pretty healthy team, we just need to give our front row a proper rest (not a bench rest – a proper rest).

They need to be ready for the last 2/3 games.

  • Jake could learn quite a bit from Brendan on how to build up experience in a squad. At least better late than never.

The entire front row should be on the bench for the Cheetahs. Alberts should take a complete break until the Stormers game. Fortunately Steyn will have had a decent break.

Then end the Stormers game with his starting combination to prepare for the playoffs.

First and second place will now depend on other teams doing us favors.

  • @Letgo (Comment 6) : Letgo mate, although a very good team I cannot see JW not keeping the likes out of the matchday 23,

It will be interesting to see which route he does take, but knowing JW I do not see him taking too much risk.

This might well be the team he selects,

    15 SP
    14 JPP
    13 Sbura
    12 Jordaan
    11 Mvovo
    10 Steyn
    09 Reinach
    08 Kanko/Tera
    07 Deysel
    06 Marcell
    05 Lewies
    04 oosthuizen
    03 Adriaanse
    02 Cooper
    01 Chadwick

    16 Bismark
    17 Jannie
    18 Herbst/Du Toit
    19 Tera/Kanko
    20 Daniel
    21 Mcleod
    22 Lambie/Fred
    23 Odwa

We must take into account here that we are not 100% sure Beast will be out or not as he has gone for tests, so how long, same can be said of Alberts.

I do not see JW selecting Peet Marais, so it could mean Deysel moving to lock like Alberts did late in the game.

Also JW will not want to make too many changes as this would break down on any continuity they had before, we must remember we also have had a long lay off, players will be rusty yet hungry for game time.

If Lambie is to play I feel he will be gradually brought back thus playing from the bench against the Cheetahs

That wasn’t the team I thought might play, it’s the team I want to see playing these last 2 round games. I think they will be able to do the job and I think our front row and Willem needs a proper rest.

I would bring some of them back of the bench against the Stormers, JPP could maybe start, but the front row and Willem needs a proper rest – That means at least one week without any rugby and the next with as little rugby as possible.
