Beast done?

I don’t know about you guys, but when I read that Beast Mtawarira had a “bulging disc” in his neck, I immediately started to suspect the worst.

Now we’re still waiting for any sort of real prognosis on the injury – although I have it on good authority he definitely won’t play this weekend – but we at least have to consider the possibility that the big man’s Super Rugby contribution might be over for the season. Maybe I’m scaremongering here and he’ll be back in time to face the Stormers next week, but I just don’t have a good feeling about this one.

The Sharks have done a reasonable job in overcoming injury concerns in a number of key positions already this year; we identified lock, scrumhalf and flyhalf as areas where we couldn’t afford to lose too many players and those are exactly the places where depth has been tested. Loosehead prop is the other area of major concern and I guess like most I’ve been quietly waiting for one of our ones to suffer some sort of mishap.

The silver lining, though, is that Dale Chadwick will now finally have the opportunity to build on some very good substitute appearances, with his anticipated first start of the campaign coming against the Cheetahs this weekend. Perhaps even more enticing is the prospect of 19-year-old Thomas du Toit winning a spot on the bench.

  • Maybe not the worst thing in the world if he gets to take a break, will mean he’s nice and rested for the WC next year. Chadwick a more than capable replacement!

That said, I hope it isn’t serious and he recovers fast!

  • @PTAShark (Comment 1) : “Chadwick a more than capable replacement!”. How we would have made fun of a comment like that last year. Times have certainly changed.

  • This is not the first time the Beast has had problems. I wonder if he will try last till the WC then retire or will he will be medically forced to retire prior to then…

  • @vanmartin (Comment 2) : I second that. If I read that statement this time last year, I would have fallen off my chair laughing. Now I am actually backing him, just wish he would pull up his damn socks!

  • Bulging disks normally cause muscle weakness as they trap the nerves.
Depending on where it is, it could cause anything from loss of strength in a pectoral muscles to weakness gripping objects.

Painful and unlikely he’ll be playing if this is the case.

Nah – this wasnt an affliction ive had to endure, thankfully, despite my prolific record in the injury stakes.
Good mate, front rower, had this happen to him a couple of seasons back and it spelt the end of his rugby career. He was about to pack it in anyway, but was strongly advised not to continue.

Its not a nice injury by all accounts.

  • Possibly losing Beast makes it even more important for the Sharks to finish in top two for the extra week rest.

  • What has happened to Herbst,I see him nearly every time I go to Gateway and he doesn’t look injured.I always thought that guy had a huge future, but he seemed to disappear as soon as Jake arrived.

    He’s a tighthead, of course…

  • @robdylan (Comment 25) : but he or Jannie can shift to loose head if needed. For me it would be better to have him play in semi’s or final than throwing in young du Toit.

  • @The hound (Comment 27) : I liked Herbst. Very solid at scrumtime – that’s why I was a bit surprised when Adriaanse was bought. Would have been a sure starter at the Cheetahs, Stormers and Lions.

  • @The hound (Comment 29) : People always talk about the depth SA have at Lock and loose forward dept, but we have so many good props – there really is no excuse if the Boks don’t scrum well – with or without a specialist scrum consultant.
