Sharks XV coaches Brad Macleod-Henderson and Deon Kayser have picked what in some way resembles a shadow Currie Cup XV for tomorrow evening’s friendly against the EP Kings in Port Elizabeth. Jacques Botes captains the side from the back of the scrum, a role he may well reprise come Currie Cup time.

Jaco van Tonder, Heinmar Williams, Fred Zeilinga and Tyler Fisher are the other members of Jake White’s Super Rugby squad that will make the trip, Williams running out in the somewhat unfamiliar number 13 jersey alongside Vodacom Cup regular Quentin Crocker. Bok tourist Jongi Nokwe makes a rare appearance at wing, where he’s joined in a pacy back three by Sizo Maseko and van Tonder. Zeilinga will pull the strings at flyhalf, with under 21 player Hanco Venter wearing the number 9 shirt.

Johan Meyer’s rise continues, as he’s picked to start at blinside flank, with Francois Kleinhans completing the loose trio. Marco Wentzel is joined by young Wiehahn Hey at lock, while the front row of Danie Mienie, Franco Marais and Wiehahn Herbst have played together often for the Sharks XV this year.

  • Quintin Crocker? Anyone have any info on him.

Surprised to see Zeilinga playing here and not at least on the bench for the Sharks on Saturday.
What happens if Sweil goes down? Steyn will hobble to 10 and then who plays 12?
Don’t know why Odwa and Chavanga need to be on the Bench.
    Or maybe I do.

  • @John Galt (Comment 16) : Crocker has been around for ages. Played u21 for us about 4-5 years ago, then went to play for Border for a while.

He’s been doing well for Rovers and also played a fair bit for the Sharks XV earlier this year.

  • The real interesting one is Carel Du Plessis son at 21 this kid has been brought in very slowly and with minimum fanfare,I think in a year or two he will eclipse,Pollard, Goosen and even Lambie.
Even at junior W/C he was hardly noticed and not hyped at all.
When you think of all the noise made around Kebble’s fat son,and Rob Du Preez’s trio.

  • @The hound (Comment 23) : Jean-Luc is mercurial like his dad. Probably more natural talent than Pollard, but probably a lot more work to be done in terms of figuring out how to harness it and apply it.

Pollard has the same “old head on young shoulders” vibe that Lambie does.

And neither branch of the clan has a “c” in the name.

  • @robdylan (Comment 27) : Don’t you find it strange that both Jean -Luc and Pollard came out of Paarl at the same time, and the Stormers could hang on to neither of them. It’s not as if there is a glut of no.10′s down there either.
Pollard I sort of understand, poached by Meyer with the promise and reality of a Bok cap if he went to the Bulls.
But du Plessis is as close to W.P royalty as you could get,its kinda like Gary Teichman’s son going to the Bulls
