Strongest Sharks for Newlands

Cell C Sharks Director of Rugby Jake White has intimated that he’ll pick his strongest available line-up for this weekend’s final round robin clash, against the Stormers at Newlands.

With the Sharks and Crusaders locked up on 46 log points each, destiny will be in the hand of the Durban side going into the clash; should they manage to eclipse whatever log point the Crusaders manage against the Highlanders earlier in the day (or equal it, but also win by a margin of 9 points more than the Crusaders do) they will be assured of a second-placed finish.

The Sharks, having already secured the South African conference title, can end no lower than third and in some quarters, it was expected that White might rest his frontline players for this clash. The fact that the Sharks haven’t won in two starts, though, means that momentum is crucial heading into the finals series and the team simply has to find some.

“I think they have had enough rest,” White said of his Boks when speaking to the Sharks website. “I gave them a week off, they went home for two days, and they’re all fired up and want to be a part of it now and that’s a good sign.”

White has also indicated that the team is awaiting scan results today to determine whether Patrick Lambie, Beast Mtawarira and Paul Jordaan will be fit for selection this week.

  • Hopefully the Landers can take care of the Crusaders – then the Sharks simply need a win to be second. I think it will be a tight game – the Stormers will be up for it.

I would rather the Sharks just concentrate on fixing the issues in their game (e.g. high turnover rate) and get into the mode for playoff rugby now.

Secondly, as I have mentioned previously, a true Sharks supporter always believes his / her team will always win and I am of opinion that a home final is looming for us…

  • And let’s not forget, we have already dominated the Waratahs once this year, and beat the Crusaders at home. Slumps are temporary, if the Sharks come out of their malaise, they have already proven they can beat the teams they need to in order to win this competition. The Crusaders and Waratahs should both be worried about the Sharks, since they have both lost to us.

  • I wish the Sharks could display one-tenth the ruthlessness of Germany’s football team. To be 7-0 up and be disappointed when Brazil scored their consolation goal at the end… A different mindset, they never coasted, never sat back and defended a 2-0 or 3-0 lead.

The more years that pass without a Super trophy the more I’m convinced there is an all-pervading philosophy/culture that is just wrong at the Sharks…
