Front row woes for Sharks

Beast Mtawarira has confirmed via Twitter that while his neck injury is not as serious as at first feared, he’s still in no danger whatsoever of being picked for the Cell C Sharks this weekend.

The burly front ranker yesterday revealed that a scan had ruled out the need for an operation, but that he will still be away from the field for another 2-3 weeks. That rules him out of all bar possibly a Super Rugby final appearance, should the Sharks manage to progress that far. The good news, from a Springbok point of view, is that he should be fit to play in the Rugby Championship which kicks off in early August.

Meanwhile, talk from Durban is that Dale Chadwick has suffered a leg injury and may also be in doubt for the weekend’s trip to Cape Town, which would presumably mean a maiden start for 19-year-old Thomas du Toit in the number 1 jersey and a mad scramble to find a spare prop to wear 17.

It’s not clear yet what sort of role Pat Lambie will play this weekend, but Jake White currently looks likely to start Frans Steyn at flyhalf, with Paul Jordaan joining JP Pietersen in midfield.

The Sharks will name their side at 8 tomorrow morning.

  • No offence to Steyn, I think he has done a wonderful job for us as a back up no10. But I just don’t see us scoring 4 tries with him at no 10.

Hopefully we can see a change at no9 too.

  • So no Zeilinga?

I must say, if he can start with Swiel, should be willing to start with Zeilinga.

Anyway, would be much better with Jordaan back and Steyn at 10 has been good enough most of the season.

  • If Jake does pick Steyn at 10, I will have to wonder why he does not rate Fred. Frans is a fine player, but he is at best a stop gap 10. He is much better suited at 12.

  • Give Thomas the start with Herbst on the bench. Don’t know why Zeilinga doesn’t get the 10 jumper. Oh well, I guess we will just have to trust the Great White Shark. But the Sharks are know in the position thaat they are most comfortable, being the underdogs.

  • @Sharksmad – The Blog’s Dudette (Comment 11) :

Well, Goosen is leaving, so they’d need a new flyhalf. Player movement is a given these days, but it would really suck to see him go.

Yesterday someone said something about Kyle Cooper and Andre Esterhuizen leaving.

Another advantage of using rotation, would be keeping these players.

Not specifically Esterhuizen and Zeilinga was injured, but Kyle could have been given more games.

I really think coaches are missing a trick in not implementing a proper rotational system.

You can’t have an exhausted team going into the last 4/3 weeks of the comp. It’s ridiculous.

I don’t know about falling out of favour. He’s just back from injury and Jake just learnt a hard lesson with an inexperienced flyhalf. Maybe he’s just being careful.

It would be interesting to see if Zeilinga gets a spot on the bench.

  • Someone suggested an interesting approach on Rugby365. Perhaps it’s time for Sanzar to step in and enforce maximum playing time per player per Super Rugby season. This would minimize player fatigue and the injuries that come with being overplayed. It will force teams and coaches to develop players and extra game time for backup players would encourage those players to stay with their existing teams and not go elsewhere just to get game time.

I dont mean to sound harsh but im kinda glad out Boks are injured this year…makes the Sharks and Boks realise they need to play and retain quality backup. I get that players come and go in the modern game but geez the names that have left the Sharks lately

  • @Letgo (Comment 14) : I am with Brendan Venter on this one. With injuries and fatigue (physical and mental) you need a squad of almost 2 experienced teams to be successful in such a long competition. The only way to do that is to build an experienced squad through intelligent rotation.

Rotation does not have to mean wholesale changes every week – you need a good mix of first and second choice players each week.

Then when you get to the knockout stage of the competition, you start relying more on your first choice players.

  • @benji (Comment 35) : In some positions like loose forward, front row and back three we do. Injuries stuffed us at flyhalf (where we did have) and lock (for a while).

Obviously with all the experience we are loosing after the super season we will have some problems next year.

To be fair Jake built some capacity in problem positions like 13 (Jordaan / Sithole) and fullback (SP / Mvovo).

However I do feel some key players like the front row, Alberts and Steyn (although that one was really by necessity) have been overplayed.

I would not put rotation of players as the reason for the blowout against the Highlanders – there were some senior players who had awful games on that day.

This probably will not happen though he will keep playing JPP on centre when he is needed at wing he wil keep playing steyn at 10 (with the flop Swiel waiting in the wings) even when steyn cannot dictate the game at that position.

I mean if we only tap the attacker on the shoulder then move back to 3rd defender 3 times in a row (on the try line!) you must know that you have added to their momentum and lost your team some critical position. Better move out the way and let a real player tackle and stop him, better yet ask the coach to sub you because you suck at what you do. Tim Swiel is a flop. Maybe if he spends time at the lower leagues learning his trade he will become better, for now this is not the case.

The Sharks had a wonderful draw, a great squad, but as I said at the beginning of the year, that may not be enough. Noone, can predict the impact of injuries. Now the Sharks have a history of having a great squad, but blowing hot and cold, and then end up being bridesmaids.

Now you can also tell me to rather worry about the cheetahs, but it’s hardly the point.

We said at the beginning of the year, that if the Sharks can’t win it with this squad, and with the draw they had, when will they??

This year has been a prime example of blowing a great opportunity. While it’s perhaps premature to say so, we really should have sewn up a top spot finish with our combination of draw and squad.

Sure, we turned out to be a little light at lock and injuries to Pat and Fred in quick succession didn’t help. That doesn’t change the fact that there was a lot of other depth that Jake didn’t even think to tap during the course of the campaign.
