Steyn back at flyhalf for Cape clash

Cell C Sharks Director of Rugby Jake White has re-entrusted Bok Frans Steyn with the all-important number 10 jersey for Saturday’s Super Rugby clash against the DHL Stormers in Cape Town.

Steyn moves from inside centre to replace the unfortunate Tim Swiel, who might well be in action for the Sharks under 21 side this weekend. Bok squad member Paul Jordaan is fit again after tweaking a hamstring and will operate in the number 12 shirt. The late switch ahead of last week’s game which saw JP Pietersen start at 13 (and S’bura Sithole at wing) has been confirmed this week, with both players named in those respective positions.

Cobus Reinach, Lwazi Mvovo and SP Marais all keep their spots in a back division that remains mostly unchanged after last week’s defeat in Bloemfontein.

Up-front, though, White has picked his strongest available side. Locks Anton Bresler and Stephen Lewies are retained, as is open-side flank Marcell Coetzee. Changes come at blind side and number 8, though, with Boks Willem Alberts and Ryan Kankowski picked to start. Brothers Bismarck and Jannie du Plessis are again reunited in the front row, while injuries to Beast Mtawarira and the unlucky Dale Chadwick have opened the door for Junior Bok Thomas du Toit to earn a first start at loosehead prop.

Changes on the bench see Wiehahn Herbst come in for a Sharks swansong – where he will provide emergency cover at loosehead – and Fred Zeilinga make a long-awaited return to the match day 23. Tera Mtembu and Odwa Ndungane join Swiel in missing out selection this week.

Cell C Sharks: 15 SP Marais, 14 S’bura Sithole, 13 JP Pietersen, 12 Paul Jordaan, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Frans Steyn, 9 Cobus Reinach, 8 Ryan Kankowski, 7 Willem Alberts, 6 Marcell Coetzee, 5 Stephen Lewies, 4 Anton Bresler, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Bismarck du Plessis (capt), 1 Thomas du Toit
Replacements: 16 Kyle Cooper, 17 Wiehahn Herbst, 18 Lourens Adriaanse, 19 Etienne Oosthuizen, 20 Jean Deysel, 21 Charl McLeod, 22 Fred Zeilinga, 23 Tonderai Chavanga

  • I really like the look of that pack.
    Very well balanced.

    The backline…not so much.
Frans is not a 10! I expect the Province backs to run angles at him all day because he has the turning circle of a small ship.

Would also change 13 and 14 around. Sithole was having a cracker at 13 before the June internationals.

How can he go from attending a Bok Training camp to not even making the Sharks squad??  :?:

  • @JarsonX (Comment 9) : Maybe, but sure he will also make a few dodgy passes to the backline, therefore putting more pressure on them and them tossing the ball away for De Jong to Score under the poles. Then also not arrive or arrive late at the rucks therefore handing the Stormers forwards the ball for them to pass the ball to the back and then boom another try, so lets settle on 50-5.

  • I guess we must be happy for Fred on the bench. Steyn is a great player but he is not really suited at 10. Even defensively he struggles there – he is already at 24 missed tackles for the season – same as Willie le Roux. I would also prefer Sithole and JPP to swap.

The pack looks great – hope the Kanko of old can kick in now. We need a flair player that can set the game alight.

  • @Uli Boelie (Comment 15) :

Charls passing and even timing to get to the rucks haven’t been that great lately, although it’s what made him a superstart for the Sharks during especially the 2010 CC, passing really hasn’t been his strong point this season.

Look at both scrummies equally critically, when Charl comes on count the amount of times his passes are clean and accurate. It’s very rare these days.

I’ll take Reinach over McLeod any day. Charl is leaving. Cobus is the future. Get used to it.

Zeilinga to start, Lambie to do a good 20 min.

  • Before we complain- and we are good at that hey lets first remember that we have sewn up the SA conference quite comfortably- so massive improvement from recent years. The looking at JW’s thinking. He wants all of Steyn, Jordaan,Sithole,JPP,Mvovo in his team…so this combo he thinks best suits that. Zeilinga hasnt played top flight for ages so whether he is 80min match fit is a doubt hence the bench. Lambie must ot be 100% and thats why he isnt risked as he is a big investment. big test for the youngster Du Toit but he has 2/3 of the Bok front row next to him so no better chance.

Put 2010 up, love that game and Charl was my Man of the Match.

The last game Charl started was this year since Reinach were injured during the Bulls game and only came back late during the tour.

Charl has been average and probably cost us 4 points against the Stormers.

Trying to make your point by posting old games makes no sense. I said of late. Post highlights of the last game he started.

Since we’re losing Deysel and Daniel, and failed to get lappies, it would be useful to get someone like him in for the Currie Cup.

Just because you rate a player higher than what Jake might, doesn’t mean JW is treating him poorly.

If Lambie/Zeilinga didn’t pick up injuries, I doubt Tim would have seen much game time. Jake clearly thinks a lot of Tim though, because he’s been giving him more chances than I would have.

First the game against the Bulls (when Lambie got injured), then the Lions (when Zeilinga got injured), when he started against the Highlanders – that was the last straw for me. He just doesn’t have what it takes (RIGHT NOW) to play at this level.

I’ve seen glimpses that makes me understand what some are so excited about, but mostly he’s been standing deep, moving laterally and just shifting the ball to his outside.

Not good enough. He needs time at age group and CC.

  • Of course Saffex is a troll. When he did that biography article a while ago he downright fabricated being a “solicitor” in England too. His name didn’t appear on the register maintained by that country’s Law Society.

Unfortunately this means that the games in NZ and AUS are on at 3:35 and 5:40 respectively.

  • @robdylan (Comment 84) : Stop thinking ahead man…hahaha But ya some interesting selections for CC…do they build or back seniors…do they play u21s in senior side or u21s…I think main areas they need to groom is front row and lock.

  • @benji (Comment 86) : No fair point regarding youngsters. Its not that easy though as there are senior guys on bigger contracts that the directors will want to see a return on that investment. its a tricky balance in pro sport and much more complicated than the coach just wanting to give the young guns a run…

  • It’s better to record the games and watch them “live” at the time of your own choosing.
Or, to check out the results and only watch the games that won’t impact your “pursuit of happiness” in a negative manner.
