Swiel in the driving seat at Loftus

Cell C Sharks flyhalf Tim Swiel will return to the scene of his maiden Super Rugby cap when he wears the number 10 jersey for the under 21 side this week. Moving from fullback to pivot, the former Bishops boy will form an all-new halfback pairing with Junior Sprinbok Hanco Venter this week.

Last week’s captain and scrumhalf Stefan Ungerer was called up at late notice to join the Sharks in Cape Town – and ended up with a Super Rugby try for his efforts – but Jake White has seemingly taken no chances this time around and has kept the young man in Durban, along with star centre Andre Esterhuizen, lest either are needed by the Super Rugby side at the eleventh hour.

Powerful Zimbabwean Gareth Meikle comes in at 12 to replace Esterhuizen, with Namibian speedster Alcino Izaacs shifting to fullback and Sipho Mkhize moving up from the bench to start at wing.

Hilton’s Chris de Beer – who captained the Sharks at both under 18 and under 19 level as a hooker – will reprise that role this week, albeit from his new position of loosehead prop. He replaces Matt Jones in the starting line-up this week, with Buzwe Mpotulo, a schoolboy centre from the Border region now operating at flank, replacing Ray Williams in the number 6 jersey as one of two other change to the starting pack. Johan Meyer comes in for Sias Koen on the blindside.

New faces on the bench this week are Roan Dalzell, Cameron Wright, Brendon Cope and Legend Marwana.

  • Interesting to see Chris has moved again, as it was Jake White who was the driving force behind moving Chris to hooker, while he was still at Hilton .

  • @robdylan (Comment 7) : Yes, 1st team had several training sessions with Jake who made the suggestion at the time that Chris move to hooker.

  • @Seth101 (Comment 8) : I never realised Chris was an old Hiltonian. I thought he was a product of Bishops.

  • @Seth101 (Comment 8) : oh that’s interesting.

Now why would it suddenly be in Jake’s interests for fewer Sharks juniors to be playing hooker? Just can’t think of a reason….

  • @robdylan (Comment 10) : Hence my surprise, I don’t doubt his ability at prop though. I see more of a demand for a hooker then a prop….

  • @Seth101 (Comment 16) : not sure I agree…

Bismarck, Kyle, Monde, Franco, Jacques, Morne DuP (if he ever gets over his injury)…. long queue at hooker.

Loosehead not so much, which is why we’re playing a 19 year old in Super Rugby.

  • @robdylan (Comment 19) : I guess you’re right that’s a good strong selection of hookers infact. I guess that the way Im looking at it is the 19 year old in question in question is really really good and I would hate to see Chris get stuck behind him, although I don’t deny bias in my support :D .

  • Not too sure where you guys get your information from but, firstly Chris de Beer never Captained the Sharks u18 Craven Week side, he didn’t even play Craven Week. Unfortunately, he will NEVER make it as a hooker- his line out throwing is shocking and nowhere near good enough. If he is to make it, it will be at Prop. Secondly, Morne DuPlesis didn’t get his contract renewed and has gone back to Pretoria, as of last year. With regards to the Sharks Juniors, it is an absolute JOKE! We are light-years behind all the other Unions. We need to get the right people in the right positions.

  • Well it better change quickly! Because this weekend the u19s got a hiding of 30points and u21s got a good hiding of 50points- right in their own backyard- blatantly obvious to see that there is no game plan or structure. Something has to change and VERY quickly!
