Blind side role for McCaw

Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder has included All Black captain Richie McCaw in his starting line-up to face this Sharks in Saturday’s Super Rugby semi-final, in the unfamiliar position of blind side flank.

McCaw has been unavailable through injury and it’s rather telling that Blackadder doesn’t feel he’s in good enough nick to replace Matt Todd in the number 7 jersey that has been his regular position for years now. Jordan Taufua – he of the infamous Jean Deysel foot holding incident – drops to the bench, from where he and the big Shark will be able to glare daggers at each other before both being introduced into the game later on.

Dan Carter will also play in an unfamiliar position this week, as he continues at inside centre. Colin Slade has been preferred at pivot.

Crusaders: 15 Israel Dagg, 14 Kieron Fonotia, 13 Ryan Crotty, 12 Dan Carter, 11 Nemani Nadolo, 10 Colin Slade, 9 Andy Ellis, 8 Kieran Read (captain), 7 Matt Todd, 6 Richie McCaw, 5 Sam Whitelock, 4 Dominic Bird, 3 Owen Franks, 2 Corey Flynn, 1 Wyatt Crockett.
Replacements: 16 Ben Funnell, 17 Joe Moody, 18 Nepo Laulala, 19 Jimmy Tupou, 20 Jordan Taufua, 21 Willi Heinz, 22 Tom Taylor, 23 Johnny McNicholl.

  • All out attack at the breakdown with both McCaw and Todd starting…Sharks are going to have to be very sharp at the tackle point.
Still, it does leave their pack a little light. Interesting.

  • @Uli Boelie (Comment 1) : Carter will be so busy looking out for one of the Bismarck’s torpedo tackles, that Frans may well enjoy blindsiding him with a monster tackle of his own.

  • Why select Carter at 12? And McCaw as Blindside?

Hope it comes to bite Bladder in the rear. ;-)

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 5) : Expect them to open up the game – play away from the Sharks pack

  • I love this comment by JW:

“If everyone just accepts that in this competition the first and second placed teams always contest the final, and that the winner always comes out of those two teams, then we might as well scrap the play-offs because then they are a waste of time,”

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 7) : Its so true though. What’s the point of having semis then.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 5) :
Because both the players they would normally replace (todd and Slade) have been having crackers for the last few weeks.
Difficult to drop either of them.
That being said, I can understand the Carter at 12 move but the McCaw at blindside is surprising.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 6) : I tend to think that’s their plan too, especially after the Highlanders game.

  • I can just see what McCaw is going to do already.
He’s going to test the laws to the maximum in the first 15 minutes, even be cynical at the breakdown because he knows Jackson wont give him a yellow that early on.
This will take the guts out of any Sharks momentum and then the Saders will slowly take control.

  • @John Galt (Comment 9) : I love it when opposition coaches selects guys out of position just to have them on the field….there’s always a few repercussions to doing this.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 12) : I agree.

@John Galt (Comment 11) : that sounds like what they tried to do with the Sharks when they sent off Deysel earlier this season… and what happened.. We got stronger.

  • We need Bismarck and Marcel to be on top form at the breakdowns to counter McCaw and Todd. We can then bring Deysel on with 30 to go to keep up the attack at the breakdowns as he’s a very good fetcher in his own right.

  • @Uli Boelie (Comment 13) :
All Blacks have been using this tactic for years.
Commit the most cynical penalisable offenses early on and then snuff out any momentum. Opposition starts getting frustrated and getting penalised themselves except this time its later in the game and yellows are dished out.
