Pat at 10 for Sharks

Pat Lambie has been named to start at flyhalf for the Sharks against the Crusaders in their Vodacom Super Rugby semi-final on Saturday.

Lambie’s inclusion at pivot prompts a shift for three other players in the backline, with Frans Steyn (10 to 12), Paul Jordaan (12 to 13) and JP Pietersen (13 to 14) all moving one position out. SP Marais, Lwazi Mvovo and (perhaps surprisingly) Cobus Reinach will wear the same jerseys they did last week.

S’bura Sithole is the unlucky man to lose out on a starting spot this week, but will provide plenty of pace off the bench along with another speed merchant in Tonderai Chavanga.

Up front, Thomas du Toit has been retained at loose head, with Willem Alberts moving from blind side flank to lock in place of the injured Anton Bresler. His partner will be Stephan Lewies, who returns from injury to take over from Etienne Oosthuizen in the number 5 jersey.

Jean Deysel starts at blind side flank in the final change to the team.

He always seems to have more of a barn storming impact coming on against tired legs.
But I can see why Jakes done it.

    Good side though.

Surprised that Reinach starts ahead of McLeod…though McLeod also has the tendency to suck when he starts, and generally plays better when he plays from the bench.

Glad JP is back at wing. He should do quite well after his stint at 13….playing 13 seems to sharpen him up for wing.

It reminds me of 2012 when Lambie was selected at 15 for the final after being injured and he didn’t have a great game…..mind you nobody had a great game that day.

Great team. Let’s hope for the best.

the problem is that they replaced an inform Ludik with a player that does his best work at flyhalf. I would have started Lambie at 10 for that game, no matter how good Freddie’s (the Frenchman’s) form was perceived to be at that stage or, like I said back then, Lambie should have been on the bench.

Get hurt in the first 10 seconds, and let McLeod play the rest of the game, Haha, only joking.
No please Mr Reinach, please pressure Ellis big time, and make sure your passing game is on and that you are at every ruck and maul asap.
That’s all I am asking. Oh and in the last ten seconds make sure you score the winning try by doing that individual stuff you do :D

The thing I really like about Reinach starting is the fact that I really believe McLeod will be better in the last 20 minutes. The pace and enthusiasm he injected into our game only for the last 10 min or so against the Highlanders were key. We might need him to do the same again.

Really hoping that Reinach has one of his better games though, he can be devastating if he keeps his focus.

Leave the brain work to Lambie, Reinach needs to view himself as Lambie’s P.A.

  • @Uli Boelie (Comment 40) :

I think the way the Sharks play, a little slower at the start of the game, also has a lot to do with our game plan, not just the way Reinach played. I looked at the Highlanders game again – there were a few missteps from Reinach, I would say just in decision making, but it seem that the team played a slower more calculated game when he was on, not because of Reinach – this was the gameplan. When Charl was on, and just before that, we made a decision to up the tempo and Charl happened to be the perfect guy for this style of play.

I don’t think the Sharks will play the way we did in those last minutes for the entire game. Much of the decision making will fall on Lambie and be taken away from the scrummie. Reinach’s passing is accurate and crisp, his decision making, I would assume because of experience, isn’t always as good as Charl’s.

I don’t think bringing Charl on for the first 60min would have made a big impact on how we would have approached this game. We will play a calculated, more structured game, play them of their feet – by the time Charl comes on, he will produce the speed of delivery, which maybe he is best at of all, once opposition legs have tired. Just like the Highlanders game.

Yes, he has the skill, but still lack the decision making, especially under pressure, when there is less time on the ball, but I would think this is due to a lack of experience and even this part of his game should improve with time.

For now, take the pressure of him. Tell him to give crisp service to his fast thinking, cool under pressure, flyhalf.

It’s a good match and I still believe Charl is better suited to the Sharks’ game in the final minutes, when we tend to up the tempo.

I’m not saying Charl haven’t been great for us for full matches though, just thinking that if I had to choose who to use in the last 20 minutes (with the way the Sharks tend to play out games at a higher tempo), I would prefer Charl for the last 20, because I don’t think Reinach’s speed to the breakdown and instinct when the ball will become available, is as good as McLeod’s. In fact, when we play like that, McLeod looks at his best, and one of the best.

I would love to say play like that the entire 80, but I just don’t think we’ll be able to maintain that tempo and accuracy for an extended period.

  • Not too many surprises here if we think about it. JW wants his best players to play as much of this game as possible whilst still leaving a little in reserve. So hence Lambie/Steyn start together. Same goes for Alberts and Deysel. Chadwick and Adriaanse have made a good combo off the bench late on so he has kept that as well as pace in the form of Mthembu and Sithole and Chavanga. As with all New Zealand sides though…if you cant match them up front you arent gonna win.

  • Very happy with this team, especially with lambie starting at 10. While Frans has done a sterling job for us, it has to be acknowledged that he has battled to get his backline going. I really hope that Lambie can shine with Reinach’s poor pass, I think he looks much better outside Charl. It is true that Charl plays out of his socks when he comes on as a sub, but please JW, don’t wait for the 70th minute before you bring him on, he needs at least 20 minutes to make a real difference.

Glad JW stuck with SP at 15, admittedly he was not great last weekend, but before that he has been a rock at the back.

  • Crusaders to score 2 tries because of steyn’s missed tackles. That guy just cant tackle anymore and we are gonna suffer for it.

  • Can’t wait for Saturday, feeling calm about the selections, glad SP is playing,I mean that touch finder was sublime even though Steyn was calling for the drop  Feel McLeod will add more value in the last 20 than in the first 60 when the game is still tight, thats where Reinach will be dangerous!Cant wait for Chavanga and Sithole to come on…..and I saved the best for last!
    All hail King Lambieghini!!

  • @KingRiaan (Comment 66) : Which is sad, i dont understand why RSA refs think they are doing. Most often than not being as bias along with the Kiwi’s and aussies.

  • @Poisy (Comment 71) : I’m envisioning Frans tackling like he did at Newlands in last year’s CC final! Man, he crunched them!! That would be great to see…

  • @Poisy (Comment 71) : He has missed a lot of tackles this season, but it may be to do with him carrying that injured knee. Frans is a big guy and probably not as fast changing direction anymore, but an injured knee makes it even more difficult.

  • @Poisy (Comment 78) : I get that…and it’s been a worry this year – Frans is way too high on the season missed tackle stats! But I was just sharing what I envision in my mind’s eye…and it WOULD be really nice to see!!

  • Well Guys lets be positive :

1 We have the Best Coach since . . well I can`t think of anyone better right now, unless Eddie Jones rocked up as technical assistant that might strengthen us . . .
2 Yes we have a couple of serious injury concerns, but overall we probably have The Best team since the glory days of Honiball and Jeremy Thompson!
3 The ” Ratio Decidendi ” : We got a result at Christchurch This Very Same Year already! What`s changed? We have even more to play for now, they have DC back but we`ll have 15 men, er to start with at least!

    Lets Just Do This!
