Currie Cup reinforcements

According to our information, the Sharks will be at least four players to the good when the Currie Cup kicks off next month.

An Australian website this morning let the cat out of the bag regarding former Cheetahs, Western Province, Bulls, Lions and Brumbies flyhalf-cum-fullback Lionel Cronje. The 25-year-old former Junior Springbok will move once again and apparently make Durban his home for the next two seasons.

If what we’ve heard is correct, another player who has moved around a fair bit, scrumhalf Conrad Hoffmann, will be coming with him. This will be Hoffman’s second stint with the Sharks, but he’s also spent time with both Western Province and the Brumbies.

Boland lock JC Astle, who played Craven Week rugby for KZN, has returned to the province and will look to secure a place in the Currie Cup group, while former Kearnsey boy and England international Matt Stevens has also arrived to provide depth at prop.

More on these as and when they’re confirmed.

  • Hope Hoffman stays uninjured this time around, he looked pretty good in his limited appearances for the Sharks.

Anyone know anything about JC Astle?

  • Awesome to see Hoffman back. Really liked him last time round. Pretty sure Stevens is going to be a monster in the CC!

  • If we really want to buy a scrumhalf, we should be looking at Faf de Klerk

  • thanks Rob for the updates and good to see who might be coming in.

I am surprised that we are looking to get further flyhalf cover, as I would of imagined that Fred and Tim provide sufficient depth there for CC.

The same for scrumhalf where we should have Reinach and Ungerer?

Nice to see some home grown boys coming back at least.

Why do you want to buy a puma scrummy if you already have Ungerer in your system ?

  • I take it Cronje is more cover for fullback and deputy for Fred, have a feeling they are gonna keep Tim at the juniors in a bid to win that competition.

  • What is the thinking behind these recruitments Rob?

For players we have recruited we already have in the system:

    Recruit In the system

    Cronje Fred and Swiel
    Hoffmann Reinach, Ungerer and Venter
Stevens Thomas Du Toit and Chadwick
    Astle Wentzel and ?

Of these I think Stevens and Astle are good buys as we need cover here.

  • Both Cronje and Hoffman are talented players who through a bit of bad luck haven’t been able to settle at a union.

I think if managed right they could be an asset to the Sharks. Fred and Reinach will probably remain our 1st choice, but it is good to have back-ups and both these players can do the job if called on.

I think welcome to the Sharks and hope you do well, is in order.

I will reserve judgement re all the new – some returnees – players coming on board. They might prove to be advantageous in the Sharks set-up.
I’m sure Lionel Cronje will enjoy his time at the Sharks more than at any of the other places he has been to.
Good luck guys. Just do your best for The Sharks!

  • @vanmartin (Comment 50) : I have kind of a mixed bag that I’m listening to at the moment, but let’s see; the new Lily Allen is abjectly poor, the new Swans is phenomenal. Bill Callahan’s Dream River is fantastic. Still undecided about the new Polvo. Loving Danny Brown’s Old. Catching up on some older Nick Cave which is almost all worth investing in. Also listening to a couple of Global Underground mixes curated by John Digweed to scratch my dance music itch; quality is variable from good to great. I’ve also started listening to British dance duo Disclosure’s album Settle, and while I disliked it intensely at first, it’s actually growing on me. Then there’s the new(ish) My Bloody Valentine, which, if listened to on good earphones will make you see God. Rocket From the Crypt’s Group Sounds is entertaining enough, but far from their best. Seriously not feeling anything with Deftones’ White Pony… er… I think that covers the last two weeks or so.

Still to come; Albert Ayler, Father John Misty, Sleigh Bells, Ray Charles, Big Star, Nick Drake, Deltron 3030, Janelle Monae, Shellac and a bunch of others that I can’t think of now.

But after the disappointment of the Super 15, do you guys think the Sharks will really give 100 % in the CC?

  • Can’t believe some people are saying Hoffman was decent last time out. He was permanently injured and when he did play, he was poor. Not exactly impressed by these signings. Hopefully some better ones on the way!

    Lewies 2.01m 114kg
    PSDT 2.00m 115kg
    Oosthuizen 1.98m 120kg

  • At the risk of sounding waaaaay too positive in the light of most of the comments in this thread so far:
Welcome gentlemen! I hope you feel at home at the Sharks, enjoy your rugby here and give my sons (and me!) the opportunity to shout the “Jaaaaaaaa” they learnt all about during the soccer world cup!

  • @JD (Comment 105) : He may almost be better suited to 7. 105 kg is a bit light for a lock

  • Im happy bout these…JC Astle is a very mobile lock…and always nice to see locks coming in when sooo many have left recently! Hoffman had a troubled time in Durbs last time but he is a good player so hope he stays injury free. I hope Cronje is played more at 12 and 15 as i believe he is better there- esp at 12! And Stevens will provide quality experienced depth…which is def needed in places like Kimberly etc

  • We are light at loose-forward and need to think about how we want to play in the future and hence recruit. We need more games breakers with BMT and pace in the system….
