We just recieved a media release from the Sharks announcing that Tera Mtembu will be captain for the 2014 Absa Currie Cup.

The Sharks Media Release:

The Sharks are delighted to announce the appointment of talented loose-forward Tera Mtembu as captain of the Cell C Sharks for Absa Currie Cup 2014.

Having come through The Sharks Academy ranks, this dedicated, free-spirited and hard-working youngster has always displayed leadership qualities and is a well-liked and respected member of the squad. These commendable attributes contributed to him being entrusted with the captaincy armband, whenever he was not on senior duty, during this year’s Vodacom Cup campaign.

Tera made his debut for the Cell C Sharks in 2012 in both the Vodacom Super Rugby and the Absa Currie Cup tournaments and whenever opportunities presented themselves to play for the senior team he has shown that he has the passion and x-factor to succeed at the highest level.

Confirming his decision to appoint Tera as captain, the Cell C Sharks Director of Rugby, Jake White stated: “Tera is a talented player and I have great faith in his ability. My hope is that he embraces this leadership role and gains valuable experience as the tournament progresses, which will assist us in grooming him to take the next step into becoming a more consistent Super Rugby player, who can eventually stake a claim for international honours.”

“Tera is an outstanding and intelligent player with a bright future ahead of him. He will do a fantastic job and I look forward to working with him during the Absa Currie Cup campaign”, said Absa Currie Cup head coach, Brad Macleod-Henderson.

The Sharks CEO, John Smit added: “I am delighted that Tera has been handed the captaincy for the Absa Currie Cup tournament. I believe that he has the talent and perseverance to become a great player.

“He becomes the 72nd player to be given the honour of captaining a Cell C Sharks team and more impressively for him, the first black player to do so. This is an incredible achievement for a gifted player who has many years of rugby ahead of him and this responsibility will certainly motivate him to strive for greater heights in his career.”

Commenting on his appointment, Tera Mtembu said: “It is a great honour and privilege to be entrusted with the responsibility of leading a world-renowned team such as the Cell C Sharks. I thank our CEO, Director of Rugby and the rest of our coaching staff for believing in me and for affording me this opportunity.

“I look forward to the challenge ahead and know that I will have the support and backing of our coaching staff, younger players and the senior group of players in our squad. As a team we will work together to ensure that we reach the goals we set-out for ourselves in this year’s competition.”

Remarking on Tera’s appointment, former Natal captain, Gary Teichmann stated: “On the rare occasion that I have interacted with Tera, I have been impressed with his confidence and approach to life and this will certainly stand him in good stead as a leader.

“I wish him well on his appointment and the campaign ahead.”

The Sharks wish Tera Mtembu and the rest of the Cell C Sharks the very best for Absa Currie Cup 2014.

We need some distraction here at Sharksworld and this is just the great news we needed to do that. I’m looking forward to an exciting Currie Cup campaign. Congratulations young man, we’re all behind you!

Get out of those underground tunnels you guys are digging and give the world the good news / propaganda etc.

  • @Uli Boelie (Comment 1) : I disagree, I would rather see Ungerer starting after Reinach’s extremely poor performances towards the end of Super Rugby, McLeod out played him and his kicking was the worst of all the Sharks and the Sharks kicking was dismal. Rather build for the future, which would rule him out of a certain starting spot plus I don’t see any leadership in him at all. He is not a bad scrum half but is way below his best and needs to regain form. Tera is a far better choice.

  • Wouldn’t it make sense, given that Lambie is really not going to be in the Bok squad, to give him the captaincy since he has been vice captain all year?

Also people, let’s just clarify; his name is Conrad HoffmaNN, not HoffmaN. Sorry but it’s my name too and it should be spelt correctly ;-)
