Steven Sykes and Ronnie Cooke will be making their return for the Kings, after missing a couple of warm-up matches due to injury, as they are set to face the Free State Cheetahs in their last warm-up match in Cradock on Friday.

The match against the Cheetahs will be the last opportunity for the players to impress the coaches and to secure a starting position, for when they face Western Province in this years opening match of the ABSA Currie Cup Premier Division at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on the 8th of August.

EP Kings head coach Carlos Spencer has named eight new players in the starting line up and four more have received a starting position after being called up from the bench.

Up front Michael van Vuuren replaces Edgar Marutlulle at hooker, with Tom Botha replacing Charl du Plessis at tighthead. Lizo Gqoboka retains his spot at loosehead.

Steven Sykes, who is returning after recovering from a foot injury, will partner with David Bullbring with Steven Cummins moving to the bench.

Thembelani Bholi and Shaun McDonald will be replacing Paul Schoeman and Stefan Willemse respectively with Luke Watson replacing Aidon Davis to form the loose trio.

Amongst the back, Tobie Botes replaces Jaco Grobler, and George Whitehead rotates with Gary van Aswegen at flyhalf.

Siviwe Soyizwapi returns to the squad at left wing, while Sergeal Petersen moves across to right wing.

Shane Gates comes on at inside centre, while Ronnie Cooke returns at outside centre in place of Tim Whitehead who moves to the bench.

Scott van Breda takes up his familiar spot at fullback, in place of Ntabeni Dukisa, who also moves onto the bench.

Springbok prop CJ van der Linde will also be hoping to make his debut off the bench for the Kings against his old team.

Spencer said the mood in the camp was positive as the end of the pre-season drew near.

“We have had a tough week of training last week and it has been a long five months for some in terms of workload. We have put the hard work in and now it’s all about the business end of the season that starts next Friday night.”

“The guys are really looking forward to it, but we’ll get this week out of the way first, and then worry about Currie Cup next week,” he said.

The game will take place at the Cradock Sports Stadium and will kick off at 3pm. Tickets will be available at the gate at R20 for adults and R10 for Scholars.
