Springbok squad

The Springbok squad for the Rugby Championship was announced this weekend with fit again Jean de Villiers taking back the captaincy reigns from Victor Matfield.

The squad doesn’t have too many surprises, with most of the usual suspects present. Injury has enforced a couple of changes, the most significant of which at scrumhalf, where
Cobus Reinach has been called up to provide cover for the injured Fourie de Preeze. Reinach will probably be in line behind Ruan Pienaar and Francois Hougaard and may not get a chance to get on the field, but it is a big moment for the nippy scrumhalf none the less and congratulations are in order. Reinach and Damain de Allende, back from injury, are the only two uncapped players in the squad.

Lodewyk de Jager and Teboho Mohoje have been retained, after impressing during the incoming tour in June. De Jager probably keeps his spot largely due to the injury of Flip van der Merwe, while Mohoje’s inclusion could well be in place of Siya Kolisi, one of three available contracted Sprinboks to be left out of the squad. Coenie Oosthuizen and JJ Engelbrecth are the other unlucky two included on this list, while JJ fell out of favor with the Bok coach a while ago, Coenie’s exclusion comes as more of a surprise. It was Oosthuizen’s exuberant ball carrying skills that first got him noticed and probably included in the Bok squad, but Heyneke Meyer’s experiment to switch him from the loosehead side of the scrum to the tighthead, one feared, was always doomed to fail. Another weak scrummaging showing from Oosthuizen in his last Bok outing seemingly was the final straw, with Frans Malherbe including in the squad ahead of Oosthuizen. Whether Meyer has given him an indication of why he was dropped, or whether he would like him to move back to the other side of the scrum, has not been revealed. The player has also struggled with neck injuries over the past few seasons, but no reason for his exclusion has been given as yet.

Another Cheetah that misses out is Johan Goosen, with Bok contracted Pat Lambie, returning from injury, and impressive junior Bok Handre Pollard preferred as deputies to Morne Steyn. Goosen has taken up a contract with French club Racing Metro, but it is not clear whether this had an influence on Meyer’s decision to leave him out of the team.

If unions honor their agreement with SARU, not to play contracted Sprinboks and players selected in the Rugby Champion squad, the Sharks will be without 10 of their players and have lost another 4 who have taken up contracts overseas.

Springbok Rugby Championship squad: Willem Alberts, Bakkies Botha, Schalk Brits, Marcell Coetzee, Damian De Allende, Lodewyk de Jager, Jean de Villiers (captain), Bismarck du Plessis, Jannie du Plessis, Eben Etzebeth, Bryan Habana, Cornal Hendricks, Francois Hougaard, Patrick Lambie, Willie le Roux, Francois Louw, Frans Malherbe, Victor Matfield, Teboho Mohoje, Tendai Mtawarira, Lwazi Mvovo, Trevor Nyakane, Ruan Pienaar, Handré Pollard, Cobus Reinach, Jan Serfontein, Gurthrö Steenkamp, Morné Steyn, Adriaan Strauss, Duane Vermeulen.

Contracted Springboks for 2014: Willem Alberts, Jean de Villiers, Bismarck du Plessis, Jannie du Plessis, Eben Etzebeth, Siya Kolisi, Tendai Mtawarira, Frans Steyn, Adriaan Strauss, Duane Vermeulen, Marcell Coetzee, JJ Engelbrecht, Francois Hougaard, Patrick Lambie, Willie le Roux, Coenie Oosthuizen, Flip van der Merwe, JP Pietersen.

  • I would have liked to see Juan Smith included ahead of Mohoje so that we can see what he can do. He looked back to his best during the Heineken Cup!

  • Decent squad, I expect the starting lineup to be the same as the wales games. Should be interesting to see how he juggles flyhalf.

  • Pretty solid side, altho quite a few players coming back from injury have been chosen so not sure how match fit and ready they are. Also curious that he only picked 3 centres so they all guaranteed to start. And no out and out 13 picked.
Also interesting that he has retained Mahoje..perhaps he seems him as a loose forward/lock utility so can add value there.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 3) : de Allende will probably start at 13. It was something Meyer hinted at during the Incoming Tour earlier in the year. He’s probably considered a utility back by Meyer.

Hougaard on form can be great. Also excited to see what Damian can do.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 10) :

No, I read somewhere that he wouldn’t be selected because of contract disputes, but he is still contracted. Supposedly they still need to figure it out. I can’t see why they haven’t done it already.

I don’t think he is valued as much as he was when he was lured back to South Africa. Therefore the “financial dispute”, where what FS getting less than he expected out of his Bok contract. HM will probably just let his contract run out and not select him again.

  • I’m quite happy with this squad all in all. I’m thrilled that Zane “Krusty the Klown” Kirchener is a thing of the past and relieved that the “Coenie at tighthead” experiment has been abandoned! I am really enjoying the game that HM has the boks playing and this squad suits that. Obviously we could still strengthen the squad if players weren’t injured or japanesed. Scrummies will have to step up! But, all in all, this is not bad…

  • @ChrisS(comment18)I don’t agree with you on the Nyakane issue because he is a strong scrummager and good in the loose and if he cleaned up his off field antics then he is a good addition.

  • @Chippa (Comment 21) : I agree.

I still find HM to contradict himself a lot. I mean he categorically states he MUST HAVE A TACTICAL SCRUMMY, HE MUST KICK WELL to be a test scrummy. Pienaar is the right player for this. (his form at tests is not consistent but that is another issue).
Reinach and Hougaard are the furthest thing from tactical scrummies – they can’t kick accurately from the base (and that is only when Hougie isn’t charged down) and neither of them can read the game and make good tactical decisions for a shit…and yet they are selected ahead of Kockott. Also what happened to Vermaak??? They both have all the required attributes, just need to be tested. And if form had anything to do with it, then Faf de Klerk is way ahead on top of the pile..

  • @Zibbie (Comment 26) : Let’s hope the post 2015 pro-era overhaul will alleviate the imbalances created by playing for the perceived bigger unions.

Same issues are prevalent at most levels of rugby, Craven Week being another, where the school you represent weighs-in very heavily….

well look . Faf is one of the players im not as upset about , not seeing them there .

I feel a guy like Whiteley is truly unlucky not to be there . he has been a content performer for the Lions .

Boshoff is a bit more complex cause he is not going to start ahead of Steyn AND POLLARD .

Also our front row did well during super rugby , but like you said , maybe a good CC cant do any harm .

Lots of guys showing potential but it just seems all of them are being overlooked .

Marnitz Boshoff must be up there. He will shine in the next SR season.

I hope Boshoff has a big CC .

I see players within the bok squad will be medically assessed and some of them might be released back to the CC .

So you guys might have Lambie back . Think some game time in the CC will do him good instead of getting 2 min at the end of the test .

  • @Pienaar111(comment22)I think both scrummies have huge potential esp Reinach becos he has a big boot but lacks accuracy, now lets put him into the same context as WLR as they are both x-factor players and very coachable judging by JW insistance on CR. CR,FH van Zyl and Faf are our future 9s and all have areas they need to work on i.e CR&FH(kicking&clearing rucks),van Zyl(consistancy)Faf (ability to play80mins&bulk up a bit)

I think your no.2 will rise nxt yr and push for the 3rd hooker pos in the Boks.

Schalk vd Merwe, Julian Redelinghuis, Stephan Lewis, Warren Whiteley, Jano Vermaak, Rory Kocket and Marnitz Boshoff should have been included ahead of Guthro Steenkamp, Trever Nyakane, Eben Etzebeth, Oupa Moholo, pick a scrumhalf because all 3 there sucks and pick a flyhalf because Steyn, Pollard and Lambie should not be there.

Lambie needs to play Currie Cup first to regain form same with Etzebeth, Whiteley has been the best no8 in SA this season and the same goes for vd Merwe and Redelinghuis outscrumming everybody in sight and scrumhalf is our weakest link with du Preez injured and the second and third best (Kocket and Vermaak)not being selected

  • Most deserved is Jaco Kriel!!!

He leads so many currie cup stats:
    – most tries of all players
    – most defenders beaten of all players
    – most clean breaks of all players
    – 2nd most turnovers won
    – only missed 7 out of 129 tackle attempts (95%)
    – ranked 5th in carries
    – ranked 13th in offloads
    – 11th in loose ball collected

I have never seen 1 player dominate a tournament as Kriel did!!!!
