Another youngster with a chance to shine

If the Sharks run out on Saturday the way they’ve been training all week, then the Kimberley fling could present an opportunity for yet another talented home-grown Sharks Academy boy to make his mark on the Currie Cup.

He may share a name with a Pittsburgh Panthers basketball star, but our Cameron Wright is a slightly more compact individual than his 6-foot-5 namesake and operates at scrum half, rather than guard. The 20-year-old product of Hilton College boasts a good age-group pedigree, having stood out at Craven Week in his standard nine year and been selected regularly for the Sharks under 19s while still in standard nine and Matric.

As a player who is a year older than his school peers, Wright has had to forge his own path through the rugby structures; he wasn’t eligible for Craven Week in Matric and is again not able to play under 19 this year with the rest of his first-year Academy classmates. It’s a testament to his prodigious talent, though, that he tends to get noticed by coaches and get picked for senior teams despite his relative lack of experience. If our prediction is correct, that’s exactly what will happen this weekend if he leapfrogs the older and more experienced Hanco Venter to gain a senior Currie Cup start in his first year out of school.

While it remains to be seen how well he adapts to the demands of senior rugby, Wright is a guy who seems to have it all as a scrumhalf. A strong tactical kicking game should find favour with the “powers that be” in the modern game – i.e. coaches obsessed with 22 exit strategies – but for the purists, it’s probably his pass that will be most welcome. Of course, there are plenty of other things we’d like to see, such as the ability to put a big forward down in the tackle and both the eye and burst of speed to turn a tiny gap into a score under the posts.

Senior rugby isn’t played on schoolboy pitches, though and Wright will know that everything else he has done really counts for nothing on this stage. His pedigree has won him a chance to play – let’s hope he takes that chance and uses it to establish a real reputation as a senior Sharks player.

  • I like this guy, I like him a lot…

…from what I’ve seen, he should be second to Ungerer (who’s obviously second to Reinach…for now).

Quick crisp service, and allow the fh to run the game. Let’s hope he brings his best.

  • “selected a few times for the Sharks under 19s while still in Matric in 2013″
He played For Sharks U19 when he was in grade 11, 2012.

I hope he gets a chance and takes the opportunity with both hands.

  • Will be interesting tos ee the makeup of the side. By my account there should be quite a few guys with experience that are in line for selection. SP Marais, Sbu Sithole, odwa Ndungane, paul Jordaan, Fred Zeilinga, Jacques Botes, Terra Mthembu, Marco Wentzel, Kyle Cooper, Lourens Adriaanse all have good super rugby/ currie cup experience behind them

  • I don`t know what our team will look like, but if I`m right we`ll have a competative backline this year compared to most of the other teams.

Our forwards might be a huge concern though, especially if you take our game plan into account.

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 22) : Not just any flank, one of the best flanks SA has produced. Now if it was me, I would also pick a veteran in the Juan Smith mould over a greenhorn like Lewies.

Just because he is a Sharks, doesn’t mean he walks on water, though he probably can swim!

Lewies is a line out exponent. Smith is that, plus a great ball carrier that makes some crunching tackles, and has the handling skills superior to some of our backs. Go watch some of his performances in the HC, and still moan!

Now is Juan a Flank or a Lock? As far as I know flank which is not the same position as lock right?? please check make sure??

Lewies was the top line out taker in this years SR, this means he is a lock right? but please do not let my sarcasm go over your head as I mean we must make sure we get this right

The position and player that is injured is Matfield and a 5 lock, is Juan a 5 lock?? just checking as either I am confused or you are?

Never did I say Juan is not a great flank and in my view one of the best ever produced by this country, but uhm flank and 5 lock are 2 very different positions unless I am drunk?? NOT

AND IN YOUR HOLY WORDS, JUST BECAUSE JUAN ONCE PLAYED FOR THE CHEETAHS DOES NOT MEAN HE WORKS ON WATER OR TURNS WATER INTO WINE.

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 69) : Who are the bulls playing? Yes I know I have been wallowing in Sharsks self pity since that semi, haven’t been paying too much attention.

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 50) : He is a flank, that is very good in the lineouts too. He can cover lock, flank and 8th man, which is why HM chose him. Lol, the fact that he played for the Cheetahs is true, but he is just a great Springbok, that is able to fill the role that HM wants. He just offers more than simply being a lineout option.

As for the sarcasm, hey no worries at all.

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 51) : Nowhere did I infer he is a better lock, just a better cover in terms of experience and for what HM is selecting him for. As I said, he isn’t selected as a lock, he is covering lock, flank and 8th man. Big difference.

And I`m not sure but I don`t think they`ll have the services of Marius Jonker and Craig Joubert to call on either.

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 53) : @Zibbie (Comment 54) : @KingCheetah (Comment 74) : don’t get me wrong I also feel that calling Juan back is not the correct thing to do but to compare him to Gerber and Wiese is ridiculous. Juan had a great season in France and looks like he did before his injuries. Juan is a good player but I would have preferred a youngster like Lewies or Whiteley.
