Sharks player ratings v Griquas

The Sharks scored a reasonable 31-24 away victory over Griquas in the Currie Cup on Saturday. The team looked rusty, but tried to play enterprising rugby. The fact that they played against 14 men for most of the match, though, yet failed to really dominate, is reflected int he ratings, with the team earning somewhere just north of 6/10 for the overall display.

Let’s rate the individuals relative to that number.

1) Thomas du Toit. A solid debut for the youngster. He started off under pressure in the scrum, but got better as the game progressed. Work rate was ridiculously high throughout with his work on defence particularly noteworthy. Loses a point for conceding a yellow card. 6/10
2) Kyle Cooper. Not quite at his barnstorming best, but you can blame a lack of game time in Super Rugby for that. Coops was guilty of a few rather wayward lineout throws, but otherwise performed well in the set phases. He’s only going to get better. 7/10
3) Lourens Adriaanse. Stood firm at scrum time, but was rather anonymous otherwise. We need to see more from a player in whom much has been invested. 5/10
4) Marco Wentzel. Another who needed to shake off a fair bit of rust. Marco took some good lineout ball and also put in a few tackles, but will look to get more involved as the season progresses. 6/10
5) Stephan Lewies. The pick of the Sharks forwards, as he has been for much of the year. Lewies just has such a stupidly high work rate and is becoming a real leader in the tight five, despite his relative youth. 8/10
6) Jacques Botes. Put in a lot of unseen donkey work, as always, but came second in the breakdown battle against the impressive Marnus Schoeman. 6/10
7) Etienne Oosthuizen. Always a hulking presence, but looked out of place in an unfamiliar roll and battled to assert himself, either as ball carrier or as a defensive presence. 5/10
8) Tera Mtembu. Did yeoman work on defence and marshaled his troops well; we want to see more x-factor from the captain in weeks to come. 6/10

9) Cameron Wright. Given that he was on debut, the kid was outstanding. His crisp, sweet pass and fair turn of pace bode well for the future of the Sharks in this tricky position. Well played Cameron! 8/10
10) Fred Zeilinga. Calm and assured beyond his years, Zeilinga’s kicking out of hand was solid, but it was his distribution and willingness to test the line that really stood out. Goal kicking was iffy, which costs him a point. 8/10
11) Tonderai Chavangha. A very good game from the veteran, who added oodles of pace to everything he did and created some heart stopping moments; although too few of these resulted in scores for the Sharks. 7/10
12) Paul Jordaan. We need to temper our enthusiasm due to the fact that the Sharks midfield were a man up all game long; that said, Jordaan was hugely impressive both on attack and defence. 8/10
13) S’bura Sithole. Another storming game, with more strong breaks than you could count on one hand. Perhaps the only blight was a a tendency to die with the ball on occasion – otherwise S’bura was sublime. 8/10
14) Odwa Ndungane. Did what he could on a day when not much came his way. Defensively solid as a rock, as always. 6/10
15) SP Marais. Dished up the usual combo of amazingly good and frustratingly ordinary, although to be fair, SP did more right than wrong on the day. 6/10

16) Monde Hadeb. Unused
17) Dale Chadwick. Made a few telling contributions, including a massive scrum penalty and a few strong ball carries. 7/10
18) Matt Stevens. Not much to say after his maiden Sharks appearance. 5/10
19) JC Astle. Put in some important touches and looks a solid enough option in the second row. 7/10
20) Francois Kleinhans. Not on long enough to rate.
21) Hanco Venter. Picked up where Wright left off and showed good composure and accurate distribution. 7/10
22) Lionel Cronje. Not on long enough to rate.

  • SP starting to get on my nerves a bit. He’s either kicking ball away, running towards the touchline or not passing. Quite a few chances were screwed up by him over the weekend.

Must say out two young scrummies looked the business though.

  • Sp Marais does seem to be a bit off form..i wonder if its because he is feeling the pressure from the performances of Mvovo earlier in the year or is it Van Tonder etc putting on pressure at practise. Id like to see Van Tonder start a game. Our forwards looked ok but def still need to gel as you could see some were a bit unsure of where their team mate would be etc.

  • Thought Zeilinga’s tactical kicking was close to the best we’ve seen from a Sharks flyhalf this season but would dock a point for some of his decision-making (probably due to lack of game time). Congrats to Tera and the boys for getting the win at the slab.

P.S. Any promising youngsters the Sharks can call upon at blindside flank? Would prefer to see Ettiene used at lock.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 5) : I’m sure Ettiene can grow into the role and it’s also beneficial that we don’t become over-reliant on an Alberts or Deysel for uninspired bash-em up runs where they often get turned over anyway, it keeps our decision-makers on their toes.

With the shortage of quality options at lock, I’d simply prefer we keep some depth there and rather blood at youngster at blindside.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 4) : I agree Sharks need to keep EO and SL combo going, they were devastating in SR. SPM is not the answe at 15,Van T needs to be given a chance, and how about CW,eish, now the Sharks at last have a proper 9,off the deck crisp flat sharp passing, that alone changes eveything, and Fred Z ,he just shows what a class act he is at 10,he constantly attacks the gain line, passing flat and hard putting backline on frontfoot and has rugby kop.

  • @benji (Comment 7) : I don’t know if I’m ready to write off SP just yet but that may be sentimental. As Rob points out, he mixes the sublime with the ordinary. I guess I’m holding out hope for far more of the sublime this season. If he can gain consistency in his decision making and kicking game he could become something really special at fullback.

Alternatively, we need a to start searching for a fullback with Israel as his first name. All the best teams have one ;)

  • Just on Cameron Wright, and even Hanco Venter…both of them made a point of passign the majority from the base thus allowing Zeilinga the time and space to be the play maker. So was this a direction given to these guys from the coach as i dont know if its their natural game to play everything from the base, but having said that they both looked good by doing just that. Hope it continues.

  • Was a reasonably good game for a first hit out at dreaded Kimberly.

I thought the locks were very poor in competing – 3 locks yet not a single win on the Griquas throw? But other than that the T5 were solid. One glaring weakness is the tight work – we missed our first choice front row in the rucks and carries around the fringes. du Toit still has a lot to learn from Beast there.

Wright, Zeilinga and Sbura were fantastic IMO. The halfbacks made good, early decisions and the play was a lot quicker than usual as a result. Sbura was a real presence on attack and defence – the hand-off on Lobbers made me LOL.

  • @benji(Comment 7) and @vanmartin (Comment 8) and @sheldonk (Comment 9) Great comments by all concerned. I also still want SPM to be given another chance but he must shape up in the way that I think he can. Or else Van T must be starting 15. That may well spark SPM.
Some really great rugby at times from the youngsters. I think the team needs a bit of time to gel. This Sharks CC team has IMO got a lot to become an awesome team. I hope we see this quite soon!
    GO SHARKS!

What do we do with all of them?…personally I think Ungerer and Wright will be the long term solution.

Sharks will need a good 7 to help Alberts carry the load during Super rugby so now should be the time to give a youngsters a chance to prove himself before next year. What happened to that young flank that played for the KZN side in the Club Championships?

HM intervened with the Baby Boks, telling Dawie Theron to rather select Pollard over Fred (two o three years ago)…

…then White picked Swiel ahead of Fred, with detrimental effects – probably cost us our home semi.

But the boy soldiers on, does not allow these blinkered coaches to get him under….showing some serious character.

    - Fred just looks the real deal…hope he gets more chances in Super Rugby next year…
    - we suddenly have a gazillion centre options…I can understand going the Jordaan/Sithole route…and we have such promising youngsters queuing behind them…
    - EO is not a loosie…move him back to lock and find a proper solution for the 7 jersey!
    - I liked what I saw in young Wright…
I hope to see us take big strides forward in the next few weeks…
