South Africa take on Argentina at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday in their first Rugby Championship match of the year. Damian de Allende who will make his Springbok debut  when has been named to start at outside center next to returning captain Jean de Villiers, while Handre Pollard, Cornel Hendricks and Lood de Jager have been rewarded for their good starts in the Bok jersey during the June internationals.

Frans Malherbe and Eben Etzebeth, who both ran of the bench for Western Province last week has been selected on the bench.

“It’s great to welcome back Jean, Willem, Beast, Eben and Frans, but I’m also very excited to see what Damian can do after he missed out on making his debut in June because of an injury,” said Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer. ”Jean and Damian have played together before, albeit not this way around. But Damian has experience of playing outside centre from his junior days and he got his break at inside centre when he had to step up in Jean’s place.”

“Handré also deserved another opportunity and it will be good to see how he combines with Jean and Damian. Lood has improved a lot over the last couple of months and although it’s a big ask for him to fill the void left by Victor, I know he has the goods to deliver. He will be well-supported by Duane Vermeulen in the line-outs though.”

With De Villiers returning from injury to take back his place in the midfield Jan Serfontein moves to the bench. Morne Steyn will be on the bench as an experienced cover for Pollard, while Patrick Lambie has been released to the Sharks to gain some match time during Friday evenings match between the Sharks and the Pumas.

“Jan was one of our best players in June, but Jean is our captain and was always going to return once he was fit again,” said Meyer. ”We’re up against a formidable opponent on Saturday and we can’t take any chances or make experiments. The players know they have to be switched on mentally and physically, otherwise it could become a long afternoon at Loftus.” Meyer said: “Pat missed four months of Super Rugby and although he made his return towards the end of the competition, it was felt that he could do with game time this weekend before we leave for Argentina and we’d like to thank the Sharks for agreeing to give him a run.”

South Africa: 15 Willie le Roux, 14 Cornal Hendricks, 13 Damian de Allende, 12 Jean de Villiers (captain), 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Handré Pollard, 9 Ruan Pienaar, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Willem Alberts, 6 Francois Louw, 5 Lodewyk de Jager, 4 Bakkies Botha, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 Tendai Mtawarira.
Replacements: 16 Adriaan Strauss, 17 Trevor Nyakane, 18 Frans Malherbe, 19 Eben Etzebeth, 20 Marcell Coetzee, 21 Francois Hougaard, 22 Morné Steyn, 23 Jan Serfontein.

  • @West Indies Cricket Board (Comment 2) : Nothing wrong with him at all, should be in the Bok setup. Surprised to see him given a start at 13 when that’s not even his regular position at his union. Would have preferred to see a player such as Sbu given that start instead or Serfontein starting with de Allende introduced off the bench.

  • Very weak at 9 and 13.
13 not such a problem but not having Fourie Du Preez there at 9 leaves a huge hole.

  • We will beat the Pumas by 20+ with this team but not NZ or Aus. Players are played out of position, players lack match fitness and we have overplayed players that will break down sooner or later. We will end 3rd in the RC with 3 wins

  • @Mutley (Comment 11) :

    That seems about right.

Can’t see us winning away against NZ or AUS on current form and still can’t see us beating NZ at home. That leaves the 2 Arg games for a win and the home game against Aus.

  • @Mutley (Comment 11) : @Letgo (Comment 12) : think we will know the answer to that only after tthe Pumas game. Bokke might just surprise us.

  • @JD (Comment 13) : Beast, Bismark and Jannie deserve a break and Malerbe and Nyakane are terrible replacements, Bakkies, Louw, Pienaar, de Villiers, Habana, de Allende, Malerbe, Eben and Steyn has not played in over a month or for a limited time. Pollard will struggle without du Preez and the Pumas will be all over him like Carr was in the Bulls/Stormers game unless Pienaar can take the preasure off him by actually deliviring fast ball and the forwards give him front foot ball. Willie with again spark our backline and put Habana and Hendriks in the space they need to thrive

  • Which player has made the Boks weaker from last year? From what I see De Allende In-JJ out(+),Juandre out-De Jager in(+),Frans in-Coenie out(+),Le Roux [email protected] Nak out(+),Kolisi out-Marcel in(+),Hendricks seems like a (+)just forgot who was playing wing apart from Le Roux? The only apparent weakness is Fourie not being available but with everyone of us doubting HM re: Fouries’ age when he came back, its more reason to trust him now?

  • @Chippa (Comment 16) : My concern is Ruan “let’s wait and see” Pienaar, he needs to link the hard work of the forwards, with the speed and class of the backline.

By the time he’s made up his mind on what he wants to do, the opposition defense is already in place, putting immense pressure on 10 and 12.

So the default response will be….KICK!!!

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 17) : He really needs to decide if he wants to be a scrumhalf or a flyhalf. I know he said he does not want to play flyhalf, but he is still playing flyhalf just with a 9 on his back.

  • @FireTheLooser(comment17):That is the only weakness we still have, the absence of FDP and believ me HM will move on if there is no improvement on Ruans’ part.JJ,Juandre and Nik Nak will attest to it.
