Injury drama for Duncan

Toyota Free State Cheetahs coach Rory Duncan is likely to have to make some interesting selection decisions for this weekend’s Currie Cup match against the Sharks in Durban, with injuries sustained against Griquas cutting a swathe through his already rather thin squad.

With the fall out from a poor Super Rugby campaign robbing the side of a large number of senior players, who have opted to cut their ties with the union and play elsewhere instead, Duncan hasn’t been left with too much to work with this season. Injuries to key players in Elgar Watts (flyhalf), Luan de Bruin (prop) and Boom Prinsloo (loose forward) ahead of Saturdays round 3 clash won’t make his life any easier.

The trio have seemingly been ruled out as the result of knocks sustained during last weekend’s bruising win against Griquas; although there’s better news for wing Raymond Rhule who should be fit to play despite also taking a knock in that game.

Duncan will look to rookies like Pieter-Steyn de Wet (flyhalf) and Dolph Botha (prop), both from the Shimlas ranks, this week, while he may receive a boost in the form of flank Lappies Labuschagne, who may be cleared to play in Prinsloo’s place.

Labuschagne is one of three key Cheetahs forwards set to leave Bloemfontein for Pretoria at the end of the Currie Cup season.

  • Never ever ever underestimate a Cheetahs team…ever!! Sharks will have to be a lot better than last week…especially if it rains which it loves to do in Durbs during the CC

  • @Big Fish (Comment 1) : hey now, the only thing making me feel even a little bit better is that the Cheetahs are worse off than we are.

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 5) : And you couldn’t pull off a win against the Pumas so?

    @Dunx (Comment 4) : I seriously doubt it though.

  • @Sharksmad – The Blog’s Dudette (Comment 7) : talking to Sean in a bit. Will get the low down.

    But yes, he seems to be in doubt. Hopefully Stephan might be able to play though.

  • Kings should just replace the Cheetahs. They are free points for overseas teams and then get all plucky when they play vs SA teams.

    I can see most NZ teams beating them by 60 + points.

  • @Talent (Comment 13) : You just tired of getting your diff kicked by the Cheetahs. You should maybe do some research before posting drivel. Apart from this year, the Cheetahs actually fared better against overseas opposition. We lost against all SA teams, but beat the NZ and Aus teams.
