Sharks named for Griquas clash

Wiehan Hay earns a first start for the Cell C Sharks at lock as they take on the GWk Griquas in Durban this weekend.

Injury to JC Astle, who started at lock last week, means yet another new second row combination this week, with Hay – a 22-year-old lock who made his name playing for the Sharks under 21 side last year after a frustrating stint in Pretoria earlier in his career – pulling on the number 4 jersey alongside Stephan Lewies, who moves up from the bench.

Etienne Oosthuizen moves back to flank, replacing the injured Francois Kleinhans in an otherwise unchanged loose trio. Thomas du Toit and Lourens Adriaanse are back as the starting props with week, replacing Dale Chadwick and Matt Stevens respectively. The latter will provide cover off the bench.

Changes to the backline see SP Marais given a rest, with Jaco van Tonder ocming in at fullback for his first start of the campaign. Heimar Williams has also been named to start for the first time this season; he’s at inside centre, with Paul Jordaan and S’bura Sithole each shifting one position out. Sithole replaces Tonderai Chavhanga at left wing.

Monde Hadebe reclaims the number 16 jersey from Franco Marais, with Johan Meyer and Marco Wentzel the other forward replacements. Tim Swiel also comes onto the bench, for his first taste of senior Currie Cup rugby.

Cell C Sharks:
15. Jaco van Tonder, 14. Odwa Ndungane, 13. Paul Jordaan, 12. Heimar Williams, 11. S’bura Sithole, 10. Fred Zeilinga, 9. Conrad Hoffmann, 8. Tera Mtembu (Captain) , 7. Etienne Oosthuizen, 6. Jacques Botes, 5. Stephan Lewies, 4. Wiehan Hay, 3. Lourens Adriaanse, 2. Kyle Cooper, 1. Thomas du Toit
Replacements: 16. Monde Hadebe, 17. Matt Stevens, 18. Marco Wentzel, 19. Johan Meyer, 20. Cameron Wright, 21. Lionel Cronje, 22. Tim Swiel

  • I like the look of this team. Lets hope Fred gets the ball to his outside backs. Wiehan Hay is a big boy so hope between him and Oosthuizen they cause some damage. Also need to see Adriaanse carry the ball more. Griquas wont be easy but perhaps its the game needed to get some life back into the Sharks as they have looked flat of late.

  • Now THIS looks MUCH better! Van Tonder given a start, Jordaan to 13 where he should be, and Heimar at 12. Wonder what happened to Chivanga? Overall better balance in the team. Wonder if BMH perhaps had a look at this blog after last weekend? ;-)

I predict we`ll all be a little more positive come Monday.

Sorry Big Fish, at the moment BMH seems to disagree with you wanting to make Jordaan a fullback.

I also think they need to start settling on whether Oosthuizen is going to be playing as a lock or loosie

  • @robdylan (Comment 21) :

Yes but if this was the 1st 5 weeks then he would have been playing through that niggle. Maybe the plan was always to give one team a run of 5 games or so and the another also 5 games or so, then select the strongest of those for the business end.

We’ll have too wait and see, but I must say, I don’t mind a rotation policy where continuity is also considered as a factor.

If this team is given a run of a few games, I would be pretty pleased with how the coaches have approached rotation this year.

  • Are we looking at the Plum Rotation System?….I remember him rotating front rows every other week…never cared to rotate anyone else though, but it’s at least a start.

Think the Sharks should follow the German soccer team, apparently (according to friends of mine waaayyyy more knowledgeable about soccer) they stopped looking for superstars in their team, and made a conscious decision to build a team….

If soccer teams benefit from playing as a team, how much more will our rugby team?!

  • @MikeSebMatt (Comment 44) : the only reason the dude is not in the squad this week is because of the stupid decision to have 22-man squads in the Currie Cup.

The coaches are obviously rotating him and Thomas, but since you need to have a tighthead on the bench, whoever the “spare” loosehead is loses out when not starting.

  • Why is it that so many are saying that Adriaanse is not playing to his potential?

To me your TH is there to scrum….he’s not there to run 40m and score a try, he’s not there as the last line of defense….for all I care, the TH could stay on the bench and only come on when there is a scrum.

The Sharks scrum have been very solid, and I haven’t seen Adriaanse have his head shoved through his backside….that means, he’s doing what he is paid to do.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 48) : You’re right but the expectation to deliver above and beyond is probably based on some of his performances at Griquas and his earlier games after just joining the Sharks. I remember him being pretty handy at breakdowns especially and also carrying the ball up well. But heck, a tighthead that scrums consistently and completes his tackles is already above average.

@pastorshark (Comment 51) : I don’t think the reasoning has ever been shared and the few that do know, aren’t telling.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 52) : Thing is, since joining the Sharks, the scrums have been changed…th’s need to scrum as apposed to just getting the hit right.

It is now a real tussle upfront, hence th’s being less mobile around the park as they are expelling a ton of energy at scrum time.

Since the introduction of the new scrum laws, we’ve also seen how badly the Coenie experiment is being exposed and now finally abandoned.
