The rise and fall of the Cheetahs’ du Plessis-es

Ok, so I have no clue how to form a correct plural of “du Plessis”, but bear with me here anyway.

Cheetahs coach Rory Duncan has kept his pack intact for this weekend’s Currie Cup game against the Pumas in Bloemfontein, but has made two changes to his backline for the encounter.

Former Sharks man Willie du Plessis loses his spot at flyhalf, dropping to the bench to make way for young Shimlas pivot Pieter-Steyn de Wet. In order to fulfill his du Plessis quota, though, Duncan has promoted journeyman centre JP into the starting lineup – he will start at 13 with vice-captain Frans Venter shifting to 12. Joubert Engelbrecht pays the price for having no first name and has to make do with a spot on the wood.

The only new face in the 22 this week comes in the form of Werner Lourens in jersey 18, proof that Waltie Vermeulen really isn’t very highly rated at all. Lourens, at 1.88m, is even shorter than the starting locks, who at 1.89m and 1.94m would battle to look the 1.98m Vermeulen square in the eye.

Toyota Free State Cheetahs: 15 Clayton Blommetjies, 14 Rayno Benjamin, 13 JP du Plessis, 12 Francois Venter, 11 Raymond Rhule, 10 Pieter-Steyn de Wet, 9 Sarel Pretorius, 8 Jean Cook, 7 Neil Claassen, 6 Tienie Burger, 5 Francois Uys, 4 Henco Venter, 3 Dolph Botha, 2 Torsten van Jaarsveld (captain), 1 Kevin Stevens.
Replacements: 16 AJ le Roux, 17 George Marich, 18 Werner Lourens, 19 Vincent Jobo, 20 Shaun Venter, 21 Willie du Plessis, 22 Joubert Engelbrecht.

  • De Wet actually looked a lot better than Du Plessis when he subbed him.

  • Ouch the standards have plummeted! Werner Lourens is 199 cm and 118 kg’s according to the SA Rugby website. And Waltie Vermeulen is injured, so has nothing to do with his rating. And to further correct your article, Henco Venter is 193 cm and Uys 194cm.

All this pretty rich from a crowed that wanted Alberts and Deysel at lock for the sharks at one stage :-)

  • The last time I saw Jp du plessis play I thought he was just a bit too light for the 13 jersey

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 4) : And I guess that if a fit and on form Alberts or Deysel were available to the Cheetahs as locks right now they would not consider them – pull the other one.

Why dont you pen the Cheetah articles instead of correcting them in a sarcastic way. You obviously have your finger on the pulse with whats going on there so why not put it to good use BEFORE the fact.

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 4) : Varsity Cup site had him at 1.88. SA Rugby has Venter at 1.89m.

So which site is true and accurate for all players?

  • @robdylan (Comment 7) : You have a point. I normally use SA Rugby’s data, or Wikipedia. But that said, there are always anomalies. The Cheetahs site data also varies, and occassionaly the guys put on weight real fast if you see how the weight differs on the Supersport pre match presentation. Maybe you got the wrong Venter.

  • @Baylion (Comment 19) : @robdylan (Comment 20) : @vanmartin (Comment 25) :
So just asked an English Professor friend of mine what the plural of du Plessis is:
    - his first answer was “ten” (as in: if you have two “two plus threes”…haha)
    - his second answer was “Mrs Ples” (a real joker!)
    - he even suggested trying “du Plessis hulle”!!!
    - the serious answer, though, is that you write it exactly the same way as the singular, i.e. Du Plessis…with the plural you just vocalise the s that is silent in the singular…
    There you have it!
