  • Come on guys…calm down…Sharks are building toward a new style of rugby.

We’ll be far more patient when we make peace with chalking this year up to school fees.

Suffer through the growing pains now, with a team able to compete by next year this time, or play it safe and be even further behind by next year this time.

Remember, our coaches will be absolutely crazy if they tried to implement ball-in-hand running rugby in one go….so they are obviously slowly moving this team toward that by having them play a hybrid between the existing kick-&-chase territory garbage, whilst moving toward the more successful style of ball-in-hand rugby.

Sharks player professional foul laying in the ruck swatting the ball away yellow cardable offence and the the Sharks got a tackle penalty from that…and then the Sharks scrum that had been under some pressure for 3 consec scrums pushed early and then the short hand against Griekwas….

So lets be honest Griekwas deserved the win

  • @Spirit of Rugby (Comment 115) : Yeah, the kind that even the Argies are embracing…the kind of rugby that does not rely on bogus stats, but rather player skill and ability to run through gaps, shift the ball before impact, and only kick when kicking will give you a better result than well executed running and passing.

The Sharks coaches keep on saying that they want the guys to play this kind of rugby, so I’d assume that is what’s causing the hick-ups.

We’ll be reaping the reward by next year….but putting this brand of rugby off any longer is absolute suicide.

We need to invest our cc championship money in a great coach preferably a NZ expert and a few player especially at 9 and 10. This is a pro sport this is a business and any venture with management who does not repay investment needs to replaced.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 95) : What evidence do we have at this stage that the Sharks will actually play a more balanced game next year and not revert back to this year’s kicking plan in super rugby? BMH has indicated that the CC coaches are trying a different approach in the CC as they don’t have the players for Jake’s game plan. So far all I have heard is about a different approach in the CC – nothing yet about next year.

  • Potential points for remainder CC :
    Cheetahs in Bloem : 1
    Bulls in Pta : 0
    EP Kings Durban : 5
    Lions in Durban : 1
    WP in Cpt : 0

    That adds 7 to the current 14 = 21

    WP(23) already in semis
Pumas(18) need 1 win (v EP Kings) to reach 22
Lions(15) need 2 wins (v Pumas and Cheetahs in JHB) (v Griq in KIMB) to reach 23
Bulls(10) need 3 wins (EP in PE, Sharks in Pta, Pumas in Nelsp, Griq in Pta) to reach 22

In the lucky event the Sharks make it to 4th, a semi in Cape Town will end the 2014 season.

    No science required here.

Think back to the unbridled optimism at the start of this year – the Sharks were Currie Cup champions, we had a tremendous squad, John Smit had suggested a breath of fresh air after the stale Van Zyl and Straueli era, shrewd Jake White was at the helm and the bookies were tipping the Sharks as favourites for the S15 2014…. life was good.

    Compare that feeling to now…

  • I went to the game with my niece (4 1/2). She now knows that refs are very rarely right and that the Sharks can’t always win.

At one point in the game a Griquas player went of his feet and lied all over our ruck. I yelled: “His of his feet, his laying on top of our players” and the ref gave the penalty to Griquas. Everyone booed and my niece wanted to know why.

So I told her: “Kate, daai man le op ons ouens, hy mag dit nie doen nie, maar die ref gee nogsteeds die strafkop vir die ander span.”

The game went on and she continued to look at me to see what she should do. I would scream: “Go Sharkies, go sharkies, go.” and she would repeat it after me. And I would say swing it Sharkies, vinnig Sharkies, go.” and she would repeat it after me. Then we would inevitably give the ball away and I would start with: “tackle Sharkies, kry die bal terug Sharkies” and she’d repeat after me.

Then after a while we were again in the tackle, get the ball back faze and she screamed with me to tackle “die bloues” and she added, “Gaan le julle op ‘n bloue dat hulle die straf kan kry.”

No better way to watch the game.

Oh and she’s already telling our players, “Hardloop die bal! Moenie skop nie!

My Mom screamed and supported her Dad, captain of the police rugby team, from the side of the rugby field as a young girl. The when I was a young girl, I used to stand next to the rugby field watching my Mom run up and down the field supporting my brothers teams.

I hope I can get my nieces and nephews to love this game and this culture as much as I have learned to love it.

No bad season or two will deter me.

Having said that I think its a good thing that the Sharks lost that game at home now.
Its the wake up we need to save the season.
Find a decent 9,,12 ,7and 15, and the team will fall into place. The scrum is decent, front row and back up good, second row more than competent.Oosthuizen is not a flank and hell we could have used Brynand Stander.
I believe in Ungerer, think Jordaan best position is on the wing, and Esterhuizen should be 12 with Sithole at 13.
I see Alistar Hargreaves is now captaining Saracens,we could have had him in the seat here.Louis Ludik is flying in Munster as well
