Cheetah changes

A combination of injury and form concerns has prompted Cheetahs coach Rory Duncan to significantly overhaul his team for Saturday’s Currie Cup game against the Sharks, a game that neither side can realistically afford to lose if they intend to have any say come the end of the season.

Duncan’s men bumbled and fumbled to a second loss of the season against the Pumas last week, conceding vital home points to a minnow union; sounds eerily familiar to the situation in Durban, now that you mention it.

The bulk of the changes come at the back, where fullback Clayton Blommetjies and wing Raymond Rhule have both been ruled out due to injury. Rayno Benjamin shifts to fullback in Blommetjies’s place, while JP du Plessis moves from centre to wing to replace Rhule. There’s a new face at right wing ad Maphutha Dolo comes in for his debut (Benjamin was in 14 last week), while a midfield shuffle sees Frans Venter move to 13 (for du Plessis) and Joubert Engelbrecht come in at 12. In the final change, Willie du Plessis starts at flyhalf in place of Peiter-Steyn de Wet, who drops to the bench.

The forward changes are slightly more moderate; Lappies Labuschagne is finally over his injury and comes in at number 8 for the injured Jean Cook. There are also two new props, with George Marich starting for the first time at tight head (ahead of Dolph Botha) and Caylib Oosthuizen making his first appearance of the Currie Cup season on the other side.

Cheetahs: 15 Rayno Benjamin, 14 Maphutha Dolo, 13 Francois Venter, 12 Joubert Engelbrecht, 11 JP du Plessis, 10 Willie Du Plessis, 9 Sarel Pretorius, 8 Pieter Labuschagne, 7 Neil Claassen, 6 Tienie Burger, 5 Francois Uys, 4 Henco Venter, 3 George Marich, 2 Torsten van Jaarsveld (captain), 1 Caylib Oosthuizen.
Replacements: 16 Abraham le Roux, 17 Rudolph Botha, 18 Werner Lourens, 19 Vincent Jobo, 20 Shaun Venter, 21 Pieter-Steyn de Wet, 22 AJ Coertzen.

  • Losing Blommetjies and Rhule should make the game a bit easier for the Sharks.
