Under 21s romp to victory

They may have returned some rather uninspiring results against the real big guns of the competition so far, but at least Deon Kayser’s Sharks under 21 side showed the ability to put one of the weaker sides to the sword, scoring nine tries in a 59-10 demolition of Border last Friday night.

Andre Esterhuizen continues to make a mockery of attempts to turn him into a flank, scoring twice from his preferred position of inside centre. He scored his first after just four minutes, with fellow backs Neil Maritz, Legend Marwana and Alrin Eksteen following in turn to sew up a three-quarter-line bonus point before half time. Three conversions from Brendan Cope saw the visitors lead 26-3 at the break.

Captain Stefan Ungerer went over next, followed by prop Barend Potgieter and then Esterhuizen again. With matters looking rather lob-sided indeed, the referee intervened, yellow carding both Sharks centres within minutes of each other. The hosts managed their only try – against 13 men – in the 70th minute, before the Sharks struck again via fullback Alcino Isaacs and reserve hooker Wes White to close out the game.

Scores: Border u21 (10): Try Le-Roy Ndlopfu. Conversion Devandre Sissing. Penalty Akhona Sihunu.
Sharks u21 (59). Tries Andre Esterhuizen (2), Neil Maritz, Nkululeko Marwana, Alrin Eksteen, Stefan Ungerer, Barend Potgieter, Alcino Isaacs, Wesley White. Converions Brendan Cope (6), Stefan Ungerer.

  • Well, time for my fairy tale…gather ’round kids….

Once upon a time….inside center…not reaching potential…coach decides reverse psychology is the solution…tells him 7, or else….gives him one last shot at 12….and they all lived happily ever after

  • @robdylan (Comment 12) : Unless Esterhuisen brings the kind of passion on display from Thomas “Tank” du Toit.

    Assuming he’ll play that is.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 14) : We could always play Thomas at 10, Esterhuizen at 12 with Cooper at 13…i mean while we are changing things around why not go wild. Wentzel at 9 would intimidate most scrummies

  • @SheldonK (Comment 15) : At least we won’t be kicking.

Would be kind of cool to have an exhibition match like that…forward playing in the backline, backline doing the scrums, lineouts – you know, the real work.

Think it could be quite entertaining…and a good exercise in job appreciation.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 16) : You forgot Cooper’s attempt at kicking from his 22 in one of the earlier games. You know it is bad when your hooker starts kicking.

  • @robdylan (Comment 8) : you think they will admit that it was a foolish mistake or will they swing it as a lesson to humble the kid. My high school coach used to play backs as forwards (in practice) if they screwed up to much so as to teach them the value of ball possession!

  • lots of negativity around ae playing in the loose trio but to be honest there is some merit in it – provided the plan was never a permanent option.

backline players these days are oftne the first or second player to the ball – hell 2 seasons ago i heard a stat the kirchner had the second highest turnover rate behind bismark in sa. if it was to give him an opportunity to work on skills im all for it.

the sharks have been quite sucsessful at converting players … burden beast to name a few. i believe he is too valuabe at center to be converted. maybe the logic is that his speed training was an epuc fail and he would have more sucsess at blindside flan?

  • @byron (Comment 22) : ja and don’t forget JPP (lock to Bok wing). Moving a player all depends on his attitude and the coaching he gets in the new position.
