Odwa the only concern

The Sharks have returned from Bloemfontein boasting a mostly clean bill of health, with only one new casualty to report.

Odwa Ndungane left the field in some discomfort during the second half and apparently has a groin strain, which puts his participation in this weekend’s game against the Blue Bulls in doubt.

On the plus side, though, the Sharks website confirms that prop Thomas du Toit, who was a late injury casualty ahead of the Bloemfontein game, is over his knee strain and should be fit to play against the Bulls. Also coming back into the frame is Paul Jordaan, who was given a week off. Likewise, Stefan Ungerer should be expected to come back into the senior selection frame, having played two under 21 games in the last fortnight. Ungerer, who was expected to play a big part in Currie Cup this year, broke a finger shortly before the tournament kicked off.

There could be some additional good news, if Lwazi Mvovo is released to play Currie Cup rugby. Mvovo has not been used by coach Heyneke Meyer in the Rugby Championship so far and could do with some game time. Hopes that Cobus Reinach might also come back have been dashed by Ruan Pienaar’s knee injury and subsequent withdrawal from the Springbok squad.

  • Surely some gametime for Reinach would still come in handy? Better than making a potential Test debut after a month of carrying tackle bags.

  • @Shakes34 (Comment 1) : HM would not want to risk injury to his reserve scrumhalf. At least CR has been in the Bok setup for a while.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 2) : Not a huge fan of this theory, personally.

Injuries are part of the game, but the guys have to play to build up any kind of momentum.

  • I’m still hoping that Cobus and Pat will be released to play this weekend.

  • Cobus highly unlikely now that Ruan has been injured. Pat has now taken on the utility back branding (frans steyn would have had this if he stayed) so HM will not release him. Besides the jury is still out on Pollard and he may need Pat for cleanup duty. Or do you guys know something I don’t?

  • @coolfusion (Comment 5) : ja Pat is a specialist bench warmer. Best thing for Pat would be to move to France for a couple of years just like Franse did.
