Mvovo bolsters Sharks options

The Sharks have confirmed via Twitter that Bok winger Lwazi Mvovo has been released to train and play with the squad this week.

Mvovo’s availability adds plenty to a Sharks back division starting to come into their own after an improved showing in Bloemfontein at the weekend. With the first-choice Super Rugby player back in tow, the coaches will have less head-scratching to do in terms of finding a replacement for injured Odwa Ndungane.

Meanwhile, the injury report released yesterday confirmed Ndungane’s groin problem, but listed no return date for the veteran winger, as further analysis needs to be done. The Sharks did confirm the news we broke last week, though, regarding Matt Steven’s unavailability for three weeks, due to a knee complaint.

Stevens, Heimar Williams, Wiehan Hay and Ndungane are the only players unavailable for the Loftus trip, along with long-term casualty Pieter-Steph du Toit.

It’s expected that Thomas du Toit and Paul Jordaan (who was rested last week) will also come into the selection frame, as could JC Astle, who spent a few weeks out with a hamstring injury.

  • I would go for broke, pick Lwazi at 15 and Jordaan at 14.

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : Good pick. But then who on the bench? SP? Swiel? Van Tonder?

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : Exactly my picks Rob. But think they will put Lwazi back on the wing and either Esterhuizen or Jordaan will start from the bench, probably Jordaan i think. Unless they feel Sithole needs a rest…

  • Some perspective re Currie Cup vs Superugby. In C/Cup, without looking at injuries, Sharks have to play without Mvovo, Pietersen, Steyn, Reinach, Lambie, Kankowski, Alberts, Coetzee, Du Plessis bro’s and Beast (11 players!).
WP are without De Villiers, Allende, Vermeulen, Etsebeth (4); Bulls and Cheetahs missing 5 players each and Lions playing with full strength super rugby squad……

  • @jonnow (Comment 8) : Huge AB fan that one. Used to come on Voldy just to annoy South Africans, although I think he is SA himself.

  • @Tackler (Comment 5) : Not full stenghts Lions squad btw. Warren Whiteley is with the Boks. Faf de Klerk, Corne Fourie, Stefan Watermeyer, JW Jonker and Coenie van Wyk is with the Pumas

  • @Tackler (Comment 5) : I think what is concerning supporters is more the strength of our depth. We used to think we had plenty players outside of our frontline Boks etc but in reality those guys are just not up to it. So yes our best may be better than the other sides, but their next best and juniors are a lot better than ours

That Tackler sure could bait and raise the hackles. I remember once that he posted something that was not too flattering to Tim Noakes and the next thing Keo had given Noakes a whole article to refute what The Tackler had just brought up as a post in some arbitrary article. That Noakes chap is a sensitive guy and the Tackler just continued baiting him.

  • @robdylan (Comment 14) : No it was before the carbs money spinner. If I remember correctly it was about injuries and probably advice that Noakes was giving the Boks /Stormers etc via the Sports Science Institute.

  • @robdylan (Comment 14) : He he. No that was before Noakes got onto his caveman diet.

I think it was about his views on the effect of travel over multiple timezones or such.

Based on these facts the Cheetahs are the most affected but still play better rugby.
