No joy in Bloem – at any level

Neither the Sharks under 19 nor the under 21 team managed to pick up the win they sorely needed in Bloemfontein this weekend, with results against their Cheetah counterparts adding further pressure to the already embattled outfits.

The under 21s, who are already well off the pace and were looking unlikely to make the semi-finals for the first time in years, led 14-8 at half time, thanks to tries by centre Neil Maritz and number 8 Louis Hazelhurst. A flurry of scoring from the Cheetahs in a horror show second half, though, consigned them to a 43-21 defeat. In what can only be described as a black day for under 21 rugby in the province, the Cheetahs scored five unanswered tries in little over half an hour, before prop Barend Potgieter went over for the Sharks’ 3rd – a score of little consolation – just on full time.

The Sharks under 21 side are once again second from bottom on the log and are now definitely out of contention as far as a knock-out place goes. They are in serious danger of finishing below the Leoaprds, which is frankly embarrassing and perhaps is the single biggest indicator that Jake White’s changes to junior rugby structures in KZN simply cannot come quickly enough.

The under 19s fared better, if we’re to use the logic that a close loss is better than a hiding. The side played strongly to run out to an 18-10 half time lead, with tries to lock Johan du Toit and number 8 Daniel du Preez, coupled with 8 points from the boot of Josh Bragman, seeing them comfortably in control. Like their under 21 counterparts, though, they capitulated in the second period, allowing their hosts to score 12 unanswered points and consign them to a 22-18 defeat.

With four wins in eight games, the under 19s cling to fourth spot on the log, but with the EP Kings chasing hard (and few easy games left) it’s by no means certain that they will still be in semi-final contention by the season’s end.

All in all, rather disappointing.

  • Seems as if Sharks rugby is in serious trouble. JW can put in all the structures he wants and can bank on the u19s…but as said above the u19s can barely hold 4th spot! The u 21s are dreadful! There is no depth outside our Super rugby players…so heaven forbid our Boks move on after the RWC…then what? Are we still going to be talking structures and give it time for the u18s to come through? Or will the cheque book be opened up in a state of panic? I do remember JW being at Lions and also talking structures during his brief stint at the Lions…then the shite hit the fan…he bailed and was left to Ackerman to pick up the pieces!

  • Ja the youngsters is struggling a bit. Maybe it’s time for the Sharks Academy and the Sharks to sit down with the UKZN Impi and do something together to get a Varsity Cup side going as this will be the only thing that will solve this poor performances of the juniors.

  • @SheldonK (Comment 1) : talking about Ackerman wonder how long he has left on that Lions contract? Would love to see him and King Carlos at the Sharks if/when JW leaves.

  • @JD (Comment 3) : I cant see Ackerman moving anytime soon. If Kings keep struggling Spencer will be gone in a year.

  • Whole Sharks franchise going through the trials and tribulations of changes at every level.
Understandable yet quite frustrating as a fan.
Right now, there is definitely a need for fans to remain as loyal as they have been in years gone by.

  • Yeah our u19s are just behind the Sharks for a semi final spot..gonna be tough though. We’ve got 3 games left against WP (this weekend), Sharks (next week) and Bulls. We’ve effectively got to beat Sharks and another team and hope the Sharks lose all their remaining games. Sharks will probably get in

  • @Zibbie (Comment 7) : @FireTheLooser (Comment 8) : @John Galt (Comment 9) : nothing wrong with wanting better coaches and players. I like what Ackers and Carlos can do with a team so yes I would like them to coach the Sharks, but I know they won’t and I will still support the Sharks regardless of who coach them.

  • I would rather they approach John Mitchell and see if he would be available.

  • I might be sounding like a broken record but I feel like everyone else who is hoping for a new and better coach. I feel let down that the management of the sharks did not have the foresight to scout and acquire players as they had enough warning that we would be losing a lot of talent to boks and overseas. its been talked about since Jake joined. Yes its great to build our locals but its also great when you hear about your club securing the services of a YOUNG (note) star player or two to shake things up. Why are we struggling? We may not be the richest franchise but by no stretch are we the poorest. They had forewarning they have the funds and yet they have let us down no matter how they spin it.

  • I think a year is a bit short to show major results from overhauling a rugby union – especially if you spent more than half of the time in preparing and coaching the super rugby team.

My only concern is if Jake will have the necessary manpower to execute his plans. Do we have attack specialists that can actually coach our players to be more effective on attack?
