Bok casualties mount

Francois Louw is the most recent victim of the Springboks’ bruising defeat to the All Blacks on Saturday, with the Bath flanker ruled out for around two months due to a pinched nerve in his neck.

Bok team doctor Craig Roberts has confirmed that Louw will miss the rest of the Rugby Championship and may only be available again to the Boks for the November International series. I’m sure his English club, Bath, must be over the moon at this news and just dying to spend two months paying for his rehab, just to release him back to the South African team again once he’s fit.

No replacement has yet been named, but you can bet your bottom dollar there’s a has-been somewhere in the world keen to relive the 2007 glory days whose phone is ringing off the hook.

Update: And just as predicted, Schalk Burger has been confirmed as Louw’s replacement. I weep for young loose forwards in this country.

  • Hopefully Jacques Potgieter gets a look in. He was excellent for the Waratahs in Super Rugby and his game has really developed while in Aus. Marcel can play openside and he can cover the blindside.

  • I hear Schalk Burger will be brought in from Japan. I wonder if Mahoje will make the bench now or keep his spot in the stands?

  • Pretty sure they’ll bring in Burger or Smith. Poor Mahoje just there to hold tackle bags.

  • I don’t think Juan will be called up, not with his little French boss already having a hissy fit about Bakkies and Bryan.

  • @KingRiaan (Comment 4) : Haha how funny is that little guy. I cant see much coming from that. But perhaps pressure from him is why Smith opted out?

  • I Heyneke Meyer shifts Vermeulen to blindside (since he plays the blindside role from 8) and Coetzee a straight swap for Flouw and then put Whiteley at 8 we will have the most balanced Bok loose trio since the late 90s…

That being said if he does this he musnt make Whiteley play differently to his natural game.

Apparently Burger has been called up.

  • The best straight replacement for Flo would be Brusouw, but I have no idea where he is playing or what his form is like at the moment.

  • @MysticShark (Comment 9) : One could always leave Vermeulen at 8 for the scrums, but let Whitely and Vermeulen swap roles for the rest of the game.

  • @robdylan (Comment 11) : That would def have interesting reprecussions. Altho it could see talent leaving our shores a lot earlier if they arent making a beeline for the Boks as they will hope to qualify for European sides and thus be able to play for European clubs. We would suffer a bit…but Argies would then not be able to field a competitive side in the Rugby Championship

  • The Toulon boss does not have a case though – the entire RC falls inside the test window where country trumps club.

  • @MysticShark (Comment 9) : It’s true you dont tinker with what is working and Duane has been our best loosie over the last 12 months for sure.

But on closer inspection he literally plays the blindside role from 8 (my opinion). Apart from a few runs off the back of the scrum, he doesnt sweep or link like a classic 8. On form in all three positions, that would be my best loose trio…(still hold hope of Kanko and Brussow being involved but hey ;-)

  • @SheldonK (Comment 15) : The Argies are talking about getting their Super 18 team to use as many of their internationals as possible. If they do that, they could be quite a force in super rugby.

  • Oh and dear God we are in for misery at scrumhalf from here on in ladies and gents…

I know we as Sharks fans should show our own full respect but Cobus Reinach simply lacks in nearly all departments as a scrumhalf. Athletically there are few better, but I cant see what he offers from 9 that Kockott (now lost for good), Vermaak, McLeod (who can be erratic but still) and the youngster Faf de Klerk

  • Burger will probably start.

    6 Marcell, 7 Burger, 8 Duane

I would have liked to see 6 Marcell, 7 Duane, 8 Whiteley

    then Mahoje/Burger on the bench.

  • @Letgo (Comment 25) : Dunno. I’ve got a good feeling we’ll see Mahoje start.
With Marcell, no doubt taking up position at openside, I can’t see a better balanced trio with Oupa at blindside. Warren on the bench can cover or maybe Burger.

You guys please correct me if I’m wrong but Oupa is very much a blindside flank and Warren can play both but is a better openside?

Also Burger still needs to play a game on Friday before he leaves Japan.

  • @gregkaos (Comment 26) : Oupa is definitely a 7. Warren really a specialist 8 to me, but if he needs to play flank, I’d pick him at 6 before I picked him at 7.

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 34) : The draw looks even better than the one we had this year.

We also don’t have our bye’s as early in the season.

But we all know, we can’t rely on a favorable draw to get us over that elusive SR finish line.
