Coming off a 28 – 13 loss against the Vodacom Blue Bulls, Eastern Province Kings Head Coach Carlos Spencer decided to make wholesale changes, some forced through injury other purely rotational, for their first cross-conference match against the Free State Cheetahs at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.

Spencer has made seven changes to the starting lineup, which sees Martin Ferreira making his Currie Cup debut for the Kings at hooker as he replaces Edgar Marutlulle, who sustained a shoulder injury against the Blue Bulls on Friday night.

Tom Botha is back in the starting lineup and will be replacing CJ van der Linde who moves to the bench. Darron Nel who scored the try against the Bulls last week, will replace David Bulbring who will miss the next four games due to an ankle injury.

Ronnie Cooke moves back to outside center as he replaces Tim Whitehead, who suffers from a calf strain. Siyanda Grey has recovered from the flu and will form part of the back three with Ntabeni Dukisa on the wing along with Siviwe Soyizwapi, who takes over from Scott van Breda who moves to the bench.

“It’s the same this weekend as what it was for us in the previous six weeks. It’s going to be a massive challenge for us and we’re looking forward to that,” said Spencer.

Kick-off for the untelevised game will be at 3pm.

EP Kings:

1 Lizo Gqooka 2 Martin Ferreira 3 Tom Botha 4 Steven Sykes (c) 5 Darron Nell 6 Shaun McDonald 7 Devin Oosthuizen 8 Paul Schoeman 9 Kevin Luiters 10 Gary van Aswegen 11 Ntabeni Dukisa 12 Shane Gates 13 Ronnie Cooke 14 Siyanda Grey 15 Siviwe Soyizwapi

  • Good to see they got rid of Scott at the back, bar his kick at goal (which is iffy in itself) he is pretty useless at the back. I ask this each week with no answer… Why is S. Peterson left out of this team each week?? If the idea is to build towards the SuperRugby and he is going to form part of the squad then… what is the logic in not playing him now? Not as if his presence in the team is going to put them at a disadvantage… if anything it would add more flare. Also glad Siviwe is at the back, he played there for them during the VC. and he isn’t that bad.

  • @Stiko85 (Comment 1) : Petersen will definitely add a lot on attack, esspecially the type of game they are playing. It was said he needs to work on his defense and he will add more value playing with the u19s in Group A, but giving him a few games will be good for him.

  • @pierre_mackie (Comment 4) : I agree fully. And plus, with the type of rugby carlos wants to play, Seargeal would probably be best suited for the job. He’s fast and has flare, some of the guys in that backline is way out of their depth. There was a fantastic fly-half, who played in the VC match where the kings beat Sharks in the tank this year, what happened to that boytjie?? Glad The constable (G.Whitehead) is dropped.

  • @Stiko85 (Comment 1) : Dukisa on the wing is a bit of a waste imo, would rather play him at 10, or give Hansie Graaff some game time, they can’t do any worse then van Aswegen and Whitehead.

  • @pierre_mackie (Comment 6) : Jislike, Graaff ya. Didn’t he leave Natal coz he couldn’t crack the curry cup squad? And now he doesn’t even get a shot here in PE as well… ay ne. Spencer’s lack of Head coach experience is showing big time

  • @pierre_mackie (Comment 7) : Yes that’s the boy Dukisa… He’d make a great fly-half if nurtured right. Plus, The Kings would score browny points with the Minister of Sport if they invested in him

  • @pierre_mackie (Comment 10) : Total waste indeed, I agree, both Graaff and Dukisa has a lot to offer in the 10 Berth. Aswegen makes a lot of unnecessary errors and George is probably a much better policeman than what he is a rugby player

  • @Ludz (Comment 12) : Exactly hey, the guy made such a huge impact on the team in the VC you’d be thinking they would give him a shot at the 10 or at least coming from the bench to play there
