Boks back future stars

Heyneke Meyer has invited three young players, who have performed well on this year’s Currie Cup stage, to train with his squad in Cape Town this week.

It’s the sort of move that has been done in the past – with youngsters given a taste of the “Bok experience” without actually receiving formal call ups. The lucky three this time around are Western Province number 8 Nizaam Carr, team mate and winger Seabelo Senatla and Kings loosehead Lizo Gqoboka.

While there’s no doubt that some good talent identification has taken place here, with only a blind man able to ignore the exploits of Carr and Senatla in particular, the real challenge ahead of the Bok management is to ensure that this exercise actually bears fruit and that all three of the identified players go on to make meaningful contributions at test level in years to come.

Many players have benefited from this sort of “young gun” treatment in the past. I battle to think of too many, though, that have gone on to become regular test players.

  • Not a bad idea to reward young players in form, but isnt Senatla injured? if so, whats the point of a call up? I know he would still benefit from off the field stuff but surely picking an injured player is a bit silly? Ive seen Lizo Gqoboka do some nice stuff in open play but how is his scrumming etc? Im all for guys being able to do that pretty stuff but if h cant scrum of lift lineouts etc then he is a useless prop

  • @SheldonK (Comment 2) : Senatla is injured, so won’t particpate in field sessions.

Have to say I agree with his call-up though.

  • And still the Lions players, union, supporters etc get shafted.

  • @robdylan (Comment 3) : Ya see Rob im all for rewarding guys in form but a guy thats injured just doesnt make sense sorry. They may get a little bit of off field benefit but the most benefit would be on the field so a fully fit player would get more out of it. So if they invite Senatla fair enough but then invite a guy that could benefit from field sessions too

  • @robdylan (Comment 6) : Well if they wanting uncapped backline players then Cheslin Colby springs to mind or Rsco Speckman. Forwards Jaco Kriel springs to mind. There are probably others..those just came to mind quickly

Do we really need to be flogging the same tired 2007-era warhorses?

  • I think the reason that those 3 was called up and not Lions players was because the Boks are in Cape Town now, same as when Tera, S’bu and Jordaan was invited to train with them when they were here in Durbs. Guess it is just a logistical thing.

  • @robdylan (Comment 8) : The mix is key, having experience around and on the field especially when things arent going well is def needed. But its that balance that is so important. So in all honestly Matfield has been key for us so need to retain him until someone else shows he can do better. Im not convinced on either Smith or Burger however. I also feel that the backups to our front row need to be quickly determined and they need game time

  • @SheldonK (Comment 5) : And how much has Senatla proven really? He is playing in probably the only consistent and well rounded team at the moment. He has played half a CC (not even) and his injury makes it difficult to rate him against other players at that level who have been playing week in and out. Carr I definitely agree with, he should be looked at.

  • Lizo’s call-up is a strange one. Surely there are both Lions and Sharks players ahead of him in the LH queue?

  • @coolfusion (Comment 11) : its the old story of team success leads to individual success. Cant say Carr has proven more than Senatla when they pretty much played the same, mayb Carr played 1 more game. I think both fair callups, just think if Senatla injuted then perhaps someone else would benefit more

Maybe a Lions player will be called up with the Bulls players :)

  • @Baylion (Comment 19) : Well if they do then call up Lions, Bulls and maybe Puma players then it will mean that they are doing it on a regional basis and that they think that PE is a suburb of Cape Town.

  • They are doing it on a regional basis…and I think most people are missing the point that this is all about exposure for guys with potential for the future!! Senatla definitely fits that bill…and I’ve been impressed with the LH, although he is not nearthe front of the queue…

  • Lizo Gqoboka bent Marcel van der Merwe in half the other week..he’s a promising player, 1 of our better performers in our weak pack. He’s a good ball carrier and good defensively. Trained a bit with the Sharkies earlier this year ahead of Super Rugby

  • @JD (Comment 29) : look, he invites the youngsters to training, but when there’s an injury, it’s Percy and Bobby he’ll be picking.

Or more likely Johan Roets and Danie Rossouw, because he doesn’t fancy English players that much.
