The Sharks under 21 side held out for a famous victory over their table-topping Lions counterparts at Ellis Park on Friday afternoon, a truly astounding, if unexpected result, given the way their season has gone so far.

The Sharks laid the platform for their 31-20 victory with a strong first-half showing, going ahead in the 15th minute via a try to left wing Alrin Eksteen. Bendan Cope converted for a 7-0 advantage, which was reduced to 7-3 by Lions flyhalf Brandan Hewitt some minutes later. Cope struck again with a penalty in the 25th minutes, before an unconverted Lions try to Damien Engledoe narrowed the gap to 10-8. Flank Liam O’Connell struck next for the visitors, but his 7-pointer was immediately cancelled out by a try to Lions winger Selom Gavor.

Cope struck a second penalty just before the half-time whistle to ensure a handy 5-point buffer, with the Sharks leading 20-15.

That leas was son hauled in, but not overtaken, as Gavor scored again (and Hewitt again failed with the conversion). At 20-all and still half an hour to play, it was anybody’s game, but the young Sharks, who are unfortunately already out of the running for the knock outs, finished the stronger side, as two Cope penalties sandwiched a try by fullback Alcino Izaacs.

Golden Lions (20). Tries: Damien Engledoe, Selom Gavor (2). Conversion: Brandan Hewitt. Penalty: Hewitt.
Sharks (31). Tries: Alcino Izaacs, Alrin Eksteen, Liam O’Connell. Conversions: Brendan Cope (2). Penalties: Cope (4).

  • I must say that in this game, there was more structure on display and it was easier to see the talent at our disposal. I think they must stop with wholesale changes as this disrupts team cohessiveness and the laaties’ confusion.

  • Its a good result but i must say that the tackling in large patches was truly pathetic! And is has been the reason for this sides downfall this year

  • It was a first tym watch the under 21s since I’m new in rugby. These Sharks boys performance made me wonder why they are languishing outside the top 4. Bt I think they need to wek on their defence, tht Gavor boy was like a hot knife on batter on our defence.

  • @robdylan (Comment 11) : I truly believe the Sharks need a new defensive coach as our tackling technique from u19 to seniors is poor. Also an Argentine scrum coach would look out of place…

  • is the good Dr still there to help with the visual awareness?

would also love to see an Eddie Jones type come and help with the backline and skills. it is moving in the right direction but the guys don’t look like a well drilled unit yet. at least twice the seniors carves the Bulls open with the chip and Mvovo’s break but support play lacking – almost as if the guys were surprised it worked.

  • @Kabouter (Comment 17) : jeez, how bad was Mvovo’s failure to pass to Jordaan in the second half? Watched the match back yesterday and just couldn’t believe he didn’t throw the pass to his left. Jordaan would probably have fucked it up himself, but just in case he had caught and passed on, there were three men on his outside.

  • @Kabouter (Comment 17) : @robdylan (Comment 18) : Ja was wondering what got into Mvovo, the whole Bulls team was blindsided and then he broke back towards the pursuing defence, every step in the other direction would have taken more and more players out of the pursuit. That was a badly butchered try.
