For all of you who have Android smartphones or tablets (running Android 4.2 or higher), I have a special treat in store.

You can download the first version of the Sharksworld for Android App free of charge from this link and let me know what you think of it.

There are a few things to bear in mind, though, given that this is still a very early release of the App:
- Right now, it’s read-only. You can view articles and comments, but won’t be able to post your own comments just yet. That’s the next major feature that’s coming.
- It’s been designed for a smartphone screen. That doesn’t mean it won’t (or shouldn’t) run on your Android tablet; it just means that it won’t make particularly good use of screen real estate on bigger devices. I’ll address that at some point in the future too.
- It’s not yet available through the Google Play store, which means you’re downloading it directly from this site. That does mean that you’ll need to change your device security settings to allow the installation of third party apps.
- I’ve tested it pretty thoroughly, but obviously can’t cover every eventuality. Please do let me know, via the comments here or in an email, if it’s not working for you. Explain the problem in detail and I’ll see if I can make a plan to fix it. Again, no guarantees, but I will try.
- Don’t ask me for an iOS version, please. Apple do not believe in using open development platforms or languages and until they do, I’m unlikely to invest in the infrastructure necessary to build an iPhone/iPad app. If anyone wants to sponsor me a MacBook, iPhone and iPad for development and testing purposes, though, I’ll revisit.
- You need a network connection for the App to work. If you don’t have one, it will exit.

The App is designed to be quite simple to use and, for now, doesn’t really do all that much. Here’s how to use it.

- Open the App. You’ll see a chronological list of the 100 most recent posts on the sites.
- To refresh the list of posts, pull down from the top of the list (just under the logo).
- To view a particular post, just tap on it. The post will open. You can go back to the list of posts using the Back button, or by tapping on the title bar.
- Swipe left, or tap the “Comments” tab to view comments for the post. Swipe right or tap the “Post” tab to move back to the post.
- When in the comments view, the default is to only display the 10 most recent comments for the post. Tap the text that says “Show previous comments” to show all of the comments.
- To refresh the comments, again pull down from the top of the list. This will fetch any new comments from the server (and will also revert to the 10 most recent comments).

Have fun, tell your friends and please let me have any (constructive) comments and suggestions.

I’m obviously not going to be held liable for any damage that occurs, for any reason, whatsoever, regardless and similar legal stuff.

  • Hi Rob, I loaded it on my Nexus 7 and it looks great. Pitty there aren’t login/comment features yet? Otherwise it is looking really cool and neat.

  • @Uli Boelie (Comment 1) : I promise that part is coming soon. I didn’t want to wait to release it, though, because I want some feedback on the layout and how easy it is to use.

  • @pierre_mackie (Comment 6) : Well, the answer is I can pretty much make it do anything.

I do want to be careful though, about adding too many features which might risk making it more difficult to use. Also want to check that the things I add are things that the majority of people want.

Right now I’ve got this list of priorities:

    1) make it possible to log in and comment
    2) get the app to notify you when there are new posts
    3) indicate which posts have recent comments on the first page

    ….
    99) anything else

  • Rob, the app looks great.
Initial thought is that the list of articles becomes a little cumbersome as there are so many.
What about listing the 10 most recent in chronological order? Then break it up into sections – match reports, team news, player profiles, Bok stuff, etc.

    And a search function?

And a unique picture for each article rather than the poster’s profile pic?

And, and, and…! You’ll have your hands full but really, it looks great already.

  • @Flashman (Comment 12) : Search is a good idea. Will include that at some point.

I don’t want to clutter the interface by bringing in the concept of categories and tags, though. My feeling is that most people will want to use the mobile app to keep up to date with current stories and recent comments, rather than browsing through the 6-year-long annals of the site’s history.

Always love to be told I’m wrong, of course :)

The true potential of most Samsung phones are unfortunately only realised once you flash them with custom Android ROMs. The Note’s stock ROM was pretty decent though although the same can’t be said for the Galaxy S range.

  • @robdylan (Comment 115) : Must be network related. Here at work we have a very unstable 3G connection so the app crashes frequently. When I switch over to Gsm(Edge) only, then no crashes at all. Last night at home the network was all over the place as well. Once it stabilised the crashing was gone.
