Lizo Pumzile Gqoboka started his rugby career as a no 8 after he left school and joined Queensburgh Sports Club in 2009 before he moved to Durban Collegians Sports Club. The 24 year old joined the Eastern Province Kings as a prop in 2011 playing for their Under 21 side and a year later for their Vodacom Cup side in 2012.

The 117kg prop made his senior debut against the Border Bulldogs as a replacement and eventually earned his first start against the Free State Cheetahs a fortnight later. Lizo has since made 36 appearances for the Kings at senior level and scored two tries.

Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer has said that they have identified him along with Western Province’s Nizaam Carr and Seabelo Senatla as three promising young players and would like to expose them to the Springbok ethos while also having a look at what they can do in training.

“Although these players are not formally part of the Springbok squad, they get to experience what it takes at the top level and we get ot work with them, even if it’s on for one or two sessions”, said Meyer

“Lizo has shown determination and dedication in everything that he has done, he has worked hard and there is no doubt that he deserves this opportunity”, said Eastern Province CEO Charl Crous.

Gqoboka also spent a brief time at the Sharks for pre-season training before the start of this year’s Super Rugby season to get exposure prior to the Kings return to Super Rugby in 2016.

He has really been one of the stand out player for the Kings, having played 420 minutes over the last seven games, 80 minutes against the Cheetahs. His skills are also good for a prop with only three handling errors, and a high work rate with 198 metres gained, 41 tackles, only missing 1 out of the 11 in their last game. He has made 45 carries with 2 clean breaks and one try.

“I believe that one day God will give me the opportunity to play there. It really is what I want to achieve with my rugby career, to be a Bok and play for my country. I think its awesome,” said Gqoboka

“It’s like a dream come true. I’m just going there now to learn and get used to the environment and work hard,” he added.

  • Well done to Lizo. Not happy about the timing though, now that the Kings know that they are being watched and if they play well they get exposure to the Bok set, they are going to be pumped this Saturday:-)

  • @pierre_mackie (Comment 2) : Jacques Engelbrecht…now if ever I have seen a disintrusted player on a rugby field it was him last week. I dont think he is enjoying Pretoria.
