Hapless Border under 21s routed in fine style

Number 8 Louis Hazelhurst scored four of his side’s 16 tries, as the Sharks under 21 team ran out to a rather embarrassing 106-3 victory over their Border counterparts at Kings Park on Saturday.

With tries flowing regularly, at a pace of one every five minutes or so, it’s doubtful whether the Sharks took anything real from the match; the five log points won’t be enough to get them into semi-final contention (that ship has sailed), but did give them the opportunity to try some training ground moves in a match scenario.

Flyhalf Brendan Cope also got in some goal-kicking practice, slotting 13 conversions to go with a brace of tries. Lock Buzwe Mpotulo also scored two, with eight other players each dotting down once.

Sharks under 21 (106): Tries Louis Hazelhurst (4), Hanco Venter, Buzwe Mpotulo (2), Jacques Taylor, Barend Potgieter, Brandon Cope (2), Sipho Mkize, Michael Cloete, Sabata Mokhachane, Tyler Fisher, Sias Koen. Converions Cope (13).
Border under 21 (3): Penalty Devandre Sissing.

  • Can someone confirm that the Border team arrived for this game? Sounds like the u21′s played against some tackle bags and one of those bags miraculously pulled off a drop-goal

  • Sounds like Border’s flyhalf got a lot of practice perfecting his kick-offs.

  • Border RUgby is really struggling…would it not make sense to amalgamate the Union with EP Kings?

  • @SheldonK (Comment 4) : yes, but how to get hte turkeys to vote for Christmas?

Border, to my mind, is a festering canker. They need to abolish it with all haste.

  • The problem Border have is a lack of finance so all their top schoolboys are signed up by the richer and bigger Unions. Us Sharks have benefited significantly. Both our most recent captains are Border schoolboys. Border schools produce some of the best talent in the country, however they haven’t got a hope of retaining them post school. EP Kings are in a similar situation. The EP craven week side were the best side this year, Grey High are perenially strong. Yet, how many of the EP craven week side will stay in PE? EP Kings first side battle to even secure a sponsor.

  • @robdylan (Comment 7) : I think he means Terra and Keegan. @robdylan (Comment 5) : Turkeys is def an apt description- the Border Turkeys is a much more appropriate name than Bulldogs

  • Not that EP Kings don’t have their own politics, but there is way too much politics in Border rugby, I wouldn’t want any of the Border stakeholders anywhere near EP. Always support Border at schoolboy level, beyond that. Never!!!!
