Boks get the cotton wool treatment

The contracted Springbok group will not be released to play Currie Cup rugby, in accordance with an agreement that was reached with their provincial unions ahead of the competition.

Instead, the group (comprising the bulk of the Rugby Championship squad) will enjoy a rare period of rest, before regrouping in a fortnight’s time for a national training camp in Stellenbosch. That camp will last from 20-24 October, with the squad for the end of year tour to be announced on the 26th of this month. The group will then convene again in Johannesburg later that week, for a pre-tour camp.

Four new players have been added to the contracted group: Victor Matfield, Cornal Hendricks, Jan Serfontein and Damian de Allende.

From a Sharks perspective, the only Bok squad members who will thus be available for Currie Cup duty are Cobus Reinach and Lwazi Mvovo, although in the case of the former, there may be an additional request from the Bok management to use him sparingly, since he is now the de facto second scrumhalf and an injury ahead of the November tour would be catastrophic.

Bok contracted group: Willem Alberts (loose forward), Marcell Coetzee (loose forward), Damian de Allende (centre/wing), Jean de Villiers (centre), Bismarck du Plessis (hooker), Jannie du Plessis (prop), JJ Engelbrecht (centre/wing), Eben Etzebeth (lock), Cornal Hendricks (wing), Francois Hougaard (scrumhalf), Siya Kolisi (loose forward), Patrick Lambie (flyhalf/fullback), Willie le Roux (fullback/wing), Victor Matfield (lock), Tendai Mtawarira (prop), Coenie Oosthuizen (prop), Jan Serfontein (centre), Adriaan Strauss (hooker), Flip van der Merwe (lock) and Duane Vermeulen (No 8).

  • Ja it’s a good thing but would have loved to see Pat released to get some game time.

  • De Allende? Why not a guy like Pollard? De Allende?

  • Jannie du Plessis and Duane Vermeulen should be confined to wheelchairs for the rest of the season with a retinue of massage therapists at their beck and call 24/7.

  • I think there’s very little chance Pollard will be allowed to play Currie Cup

  • Whats going to happen with guys like: JJ Engelbrecht & Coenie Oosthuisen and to a lessor extent Siya Kolisi that are no longer in the Coaches plans?

Are they still going to be dragged along to the training camp I wonder? Wouldn’t really make sense.

  • @pierre_mackie (Comment 4) : I have this feeling that Meyer only has a partial say in who get’s contracted otherwise I assume Pollard would have been the one to get the contract.

  • @pierre_mackie (Comment 4) : That one makes no sense at all, but then the more WP players out of the CC the better for the Sharks

  • This is the GREATEST thing! having Cobus back wawaweeewa! And I agree Pollard should have gotten a contract ahead of de Allende, but it’s a moot point. Bok coaching staff have backed him as the nr1 FH so its probably happening this coming week.

  • @JD (Comment 3) : I would not. Pat needs to be in the thick so he can continue competing for the position. Personally I think he is the better man but he can’t prove it from here. It’s better for his bok chances that he stay in the mix.

  • This thing really needs to be managed on a case by case basis. I see no value for the springboks for keeping a player like willem alberts sidelined. Gametime would only benifit the player. Same with Patrick lambie

  • Fantastic we finally starting to look after the players about time the current CC players in the respective teams have got them so far no need to lose their place due to all the boks coming back

  • @coolfusion (Comment 11) : ja I agree resting some of the players like Jannie and big Willem but not Pat he should have been released just like Pollard.

  • If I understand correctly, Alberts is a chronic injury case. Jannie should only play next year. We must breed new tightheads. Both Sharks & Springboks. I think it’s ok that Lambie also goes to camp because Meyer doesn’t get a lot of time with his players. So we should be happy that the coach wants Lambie there as well.

  • Good idea but like some guys here I feel Lambie should have been released to be given some game time.

  • Do you think this pattern will continue next year with the Boks being taken out of the bulk of the super rugby season. It would make total sense in a W.C year.

  • Very surprised Pollard has been released. Think keeping Lambie in the group is a very good thing for him, the Boks and in the long run the Sharks.

  • @gregkaos (Comment 18) : it’s not so much that Pollard has been “released”…. it’s that the Boks simply have no way to keep him other than giving him a contract.

He belongs completely to the Bulls (contractually speaking) and SARU have no basis on which to keep him outside of official test windows.

  • @robdylan (Comment 20) : Good point. I guess now I’m surprised he hasn’t been awarded a contract :)
Don’t think there are too many that would argue that Handre and Pat are our best options at 10 for the Boks.

  • @CS (Comment 22) : Yes cos Stade want to play a more running game but cant if Steyn is 30m back. Pallison has been very good for them so Steyn has been catching splinters

  • Does anyone know if Spies is ever coming back and exactly what is wrong with him,I see Meyer gushing over Vermullen, seems to have forgotten how long he kept him on the bench for the totally lame Spies.

  • @gregkaos (Comment 21) : @CS (Comment 22) : @SheldonK (Comment 23) : seems as if Pollard could be in trouble as Morné will moving back to Pta if he is released from his Stade contract and we all know who will be the no1 in Bulls land when that happens.

  • @JD (Comment 25) : Bulls would be stupid to go back to Steyn. I thought Ludeke made a mistake during the S15 to initially bench Pollard and use Fouche.

  • @JD (Comment 25) : @Bokhoring (Comment 26) : Well Pollard was 2nd choice behind Potgieter anyway this year. I reckon tho it would be Potgieter leaving should Steyn return- altho i think thats unlikely as i believe another French side want him…mayb their bench is uneven and need to weigh it down

  • @SheldonK (Comment 27) : Before Potgieter came back to “rescue” the Bulls, Pollard was behind Fouche in the pecking order as well.
