Kings to try and salvage a win

A disappointing season will finally come to an end for the Eastern Province Kings when they face the Pumas at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Friday evening.

The Kings, still winless after 9 games, will have one final shot at getting a win under their belts as doors close for business on Friday, before the season heads into the play-off rounds.

The Kings have conceded 378 points and scored 180 with 1 losing bonus point to show for their efforts. They have, however, scored the third most tries, 24, equal with Griquas and third placed Sharks, the only teams that have scored less are the Pumas on 22 and the Blue Bulls on 21 tries. The Kings, though, have conceded more than double the tries scored, 49.

When the Pumas were relegated to the First Division in 2012, it has been a real dog fight between these two provinces. In that same year there was just a single point seperating them after 240 minutes of rugby. The first game ended in a 26 all draw in Port Elizabeth, as did the game in Nelspruit, 30 all. It was only when the Kings beat the Pumas in the final at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium that the scores ended 26 – 25 in favour of the home team.

The Pumas have had the upper hand last year as they beat the Kings in Port Elizabeth 29 – 13, another one pointer seperated them in Nelspruit when the home team won 33 – 32. Last years First Division Final ended with the Pumas beating the Kings 50 – 30 in Nelspruit.

The game in Port Elizabeth will be a sort of, “everything to play for but nothing to lose”, for the bottom of the log Kings as they will not be in danger of playing a promotion / relegation at the end of the season, after they were guaranteed Currie Cup Premier Division status for two seasons.

  • Sounds like Carlos took all the bad habits of the old Lions team with him to PE? Can score tries but defending is optional.

  • Even in 2011 Lions conceded 477 points (but at least in 16 games), but nothing tops 2010 – with 585 points (and that in only 13 games).

  • I dont know the behind the scenes testing etc but often a lack of fitness results in poor defense. Attitude in defense is also a cause. I have a feeling that the Kings really need to up their fitness levels to compete.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 3) : I had high hopes for them, not reaching play-offs or anything but to at least win 3 maybe 4 games.
After a few weeks it was maybe a case of expecrig too much too soon as where playing against provinces thats been there from the beginning. Maybe a problem could be “that rugby is not always about the rugby”.

But here’s my opinion, I think the sort of game that was decided on at the start of the season was not suited for the players, dont think they played according to their strengths, and maybe the players or the coaches didn’t know how to adapt to the conditions.

They have another season, lets hope they dont lose too many players to warm the bench at other provinces.

  • @pierre_mackie (Comment 11) : they should not lose to many players as the lure of Super rugby in 2016 should attract more players rather than losing them, but I guess only time will tell. Good luck for the game as I do think they have a real chance to beat the Pumas.

  • @pierre_mackie (Comment 11) : Thanks for that. I share your opinion regarding choice of game plan. I think they might do well following something similar to the way the Sharks are now playing. Start tight and go expansive as the opportunities arise and the confidence grows.

Jip agreed . But SR teams loose players anyways . i guarantee that the kings (same as all other teams) will still loose players after 2016 . Maybe not as much . But it will most probably still be a struggle .

  • @Zibbie (Comment 16) : bottom line is, losing players is not really a valid excuse, provinces have adapt by producing more players, Kings are only at the beginning stage but they should get to a place where they can produce good quality players, even if the crowd pullers leave to go play overseas. Players to fill Vodacom/CC and CC/SR and Super Rugby teams

Do you think there is enough (quality) players in SA to achieve this ? Remember , you need a bucket load of money to have a squad the size of the sharks for example

  • @Zibbie (Comment 18) : they’ll need more then just a bucket load, at the end of the day, winning rugby will also draw good quality players, Kings do not have one of the two.

  • @Zibbie (Comment 14) : ja I don’t want to kick a dead horse but the powera that run SA rugby screwed Lions and Kings but not that it’s sorted I believe both teams can get some serious sponsorships that should help sort out that problems.

  • @JD (Comment 21) :

the problem is though . lets say the Lions get a crazy sponsorship of R500 mil a year for the next 10 years . where will we get players ? we will get players from the sharks and WP and Bulls . This will then weaken those teams .

The question remains . do we have enough quality players in SA for 6 teams to be competitive

  • @Zibbie (Comment 22) : quick answer is no but then again Lions would have money to keep some youngsters and with some clever contracting (like allowing top players to play in Japan during CC) they could be more competitive.

  • King win 26-25 with a bonus point. Tobie Botes had a great game, Pumas coulnt get out of their half in the 2nd half after a strong wind picked up and pinned them back. Kings used that to their advantage aswell as Marius Jonkers bad refereeing
