WP coach Allister Coetzee has not resisted the temptation to rest his Currie Cup stars ahead of what is essentially a meaningless context against the Sharks on Saturday. With top spot on the log already sewn up, Coetzee has picked a B-team featuring no fewer than 8 players who have yet to start at this level.

Brock Harris comes in to captain the team from tight head prop, with Oli kebble earning a first start on the other side. Experienced Tiaan Leibenberg plays hooker, while debutant Jurie van Vuuren packs down at lock alongside the somewhat more experienced Gerbrand Grobler. Sikhumbuszo Notshe is the only loose forward remaining from last week, but switches form 6 to 8, making way for two new flanks in Rohan kitshoff and Rynhardt Elstadt.

Louis Schreuder and Kurt Coleman are the new halfbacks, with only fullback Dillyn Leyds and Pat Howard (moved from wing to centre) surviving from the Bloemfontein win. Mike van der Spuy is in at 12, while wingers Devon Williams and teenage EW Viljoen make their respective first starts.

Four other players on the bench have yet to play for Province, while a veteran in lock Anton van Zyl has been recalled after completing a stint up North.

WP: 15. Dillyn Leyds, 14. EW Viljoen, 13. Pat Howard, 12. Michael van der Spuy, 11. Devon Williams, 10. Kurt Coleman, 9. Louis Schreuder, 8. Sikhumbuzo Notshe, 7. Rynhardt Elstadt, 6. Rohan Kitshoff, 5. Gerbrandt Grobler, 4. Jurie van Vuuren, 3. Brok Harris (captain), 2. Tiaan Liebenberg, 1. Oli Kebble
Replacements: 16. Neil Rautenbach, 17. Justin Ackerman, 18. Gavin Annandale, 19. Anton van Zyl, 20. Patrick O’Brien, 21. Godlen Masimla, 22. Chevandre van Schoor

  • Eish this is tough for the Sharks and a bit smart from Coetzee. This “B” side will put pressure on the Sharks to win as a loss against this side will seriously dent the Sharks confidence. These Province guys will have a lot to prove and there is quite a bit of talent there

  • @SheldonK (Comment 4) : ja but could also lose some momentum going into playoffs as a week off is not always a good thing.

  • If we can’t hammer this Pick’nPay side, then we should really just forfeit our semi spot.

  • @JD (Comment 5) : There is that possibility but I have a feeling their no.1s would be running against this side all week at practises etc so it would literally only be the game they dont play. And if this WP side wins the whole squad would be uplifted

  • Very dangerous to give the Sharks a crack at a home semi.

If we win the Semi, we all know the Sharks’ recent record in finals at Newlands.

  • I would not go as far as to say this should be an easy one as those predictions usually backfire… I will just live and hope we don’t ease up cause they sending a “B-side”. Heaven knows we fall for crap like that sometimes…

  • @robdylan (Comment 23) : Rob watch EW Viljoen today. He is all class. Do you know if the sharks have signed Hendry Immelman from Grey. And what about Joubert from Glenwood. 3 players I will bet money on to become Boks. Joubert looks like our Future mills Muliaina with options at 13 and 15…. South Africa has some scary young talent coming soon….very exciting. I sometimes wonder if sharpening your teath as a youngster with the Cheethas or Lions isn’t the best option. Let the sharks and the Bulls buy you later. WP lost to politics.

  • That v/Vuuren is a very average lock far too small for the role. Jean Kleyn and Ruan Botha have been great finds for WP this season.

Good to see Pat Howard get a run at 13, he is a quality player under utilised at WP
